Safety and prevention tipsHelp reduce the risk of damage by properly maintaining your home and taking steps to avoid some of the common causes of loss.

Preventing fires

Appliances

• Turn off and unplug all small appliances after use

• Replace all plastic vents with metal vents, and use appliances with thermal protection devices; they can greatly reduce the risk of fire

• Have your dryer professionally inspected every five years

• Remove dryer lint after every load of laundry

Fireplaces

• Make sure your chimney flue is clean and well-maintained

• Install a chimney cap to prevent blockage caused by leaves, sticks, and animals

Electrical outlets and power strips

• Do not overload power strips or connect one power strip to another. Make sure the power strip does not exceed the maximum voltage capacity for the outlet

• Replace electrical outlets immediately if they are cracked or damaged

Oil or paint rags

• Place used rags in a metal can filled with water and seal the can. Immediately remove the can from your home until it can be disposed of in accordance with local laws and regulations

Avoiding water damage

Appliance hoses and plumbing fittings

• Check the dishwasher gasket regularly and have your dishwasher inspected by a professional once a year

• Check hoses and fittings for breakage, crimping, or bending, which could lead to water damage

• Replace plastic and aluminum washing machine hoses with copper or stainless steel hoses

Fire protection sprinklers, water dispensers, and water heaters

• Inspect these devices on a regular basis to make sure they are in good working condition and do not show signs of deterioration or breakage

• Consider having your water heater inspected by a professional once a year
