Protecting what’s around us4 We create chemistry

Formulators serving the furniture and flooring industry aim to preserve the beauty of

coat ed wood and, at the same time, face considerable pressure to manufacture in

a resource-efficient, socially responsible, and ecologically reasonable way. With our

Sustainable Solution Steering method we have evaluated the value chain from the

cra dle to the grave considering industry- and region-specific views in our markets.

After identifying key sustainability drivers, our resins and additives have been system-

ati cally reviewed. This approach allows us to assess the sustainability performance

of each of our products in its specific application. We create chemistry that makes

performance love sustainable solutions.

Get a head start on sustainable development

For the furniture and flooring industry, we identified – among other things – chemical and mechanical re sist- ance, material efficiency, and emission reduction to be the key drivers for more sustainable coating formulati-ons. Resins and additives that contribute substantially to these drivers along the value chain have been classified as Sustainability Accelerators.

Let’s take a joint look at your specific requirements and find out how we can further improve both your, as well as our, sustainability profile!

Enabling long-lasting and resistant coatings while, at the same time, reducing the output

levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC) are key targets for coatings formulators.

BASF offers various solutions for water-based systems, ranging from acrylic emulsions

to polyurethane dispersions and polyurethane / acrylic hybrids. When assessed with

our Sustainable Solution Steering method, all those products have been classified as

Sustainability Accelerators, which contribute substantially to sustainable development

along the value chain.

Water-based systems

Efficient production, low emissions

Joncryl® 8225 is a water-based acrylic dispersion that can be formulated without any coalescing agent, allowing fast drying and early blocking in combination with excellent grain enhancement for primers and topcoats.

Pure performance for durable coatings

Joncryl® HYB 6340 is a water-based polyurethane acrylic hybrid designed to enable excellent abrasion-resistant parquet flooring. Furthermore, it exhibits fast hardness development for fast processing or reuse compared to other market standards.

Crosslinkers

Window frames and wall claddings suffer from weathering, floors from abrasion, and

high-gloss kitchen cabinets from scratches and cleaning agents. Since recoating and

repair is time and material consuming or even impossible, BASF has developed a range

of solvent- and water-based crosslinkers to raise coatings’ resistance to a higher level.

Among these offerings are some solvent-based crosslinkers such as selected Luwipal®,

Plastopal®, and Basonat® grades, which meet the basic sustainability standards in

the market. Our solutions for water-based systems, however, have been classified as

Sustainability Accelerators and contribute substantially to sustainable development

along the value chain already today.

Saving resources in water-based 2K PU system

The 2K PU system comprising the Joncryl® OH 8312 dispersion crosslinked with Basonat® HW 1180 PC for glossy clear and pigmented furniture topcoats is known to be very efficient. Even when crosslinked at an NCO:OH ratio of 0.75, high chemical and scratch resistance can be achieved enabling a significant reduction in system costs.

Urea-amino resins

Plastopal® H 85 BContains little free formaldehyde (max. 0.3%) and low amounts of solvent, it is especially suitable for use in low-odor acid-curable coatings. The resin contains a maximum of 5% n-Butanol; this has advantages in some countries with regard to the labeling of goods

n-ButanolButanol/ethanol

88.0 0.3 3.0–6.0 ≤ 50 Low Medium

For use in acid-curable wood fi nishes, a large proportion of acid has to be added to the resin; a suitable catalyst is p-toluenesulfonic acid in proportions of up to 5%, expressed in terms of the total binder; with lower additions of acid, the reactivity is relatively low; fi lms based on Plastopal® H 85 EB have high gloss even in white-pigmented acid-curable coatings

Plastopal® H 73 IBUsed in highly reactive baking and rapidly curing acid-curable fi nishes; it contains very low amounts of free formaldehyde and releases low amounts of formaldehyde during curing

Isobutanol Isobutanol 61.0 0.4 4.0–7.0 ≤ 50 Medium HighFilms are outstandingly fast to light, hard, and resistant to abrasion, particularly suitable for parquet fl oor coatings

Plastopal® EBS 400 ICured fi lms are pale, fast to light, and relatively fl exible. If necessary, the fl exibility can be increased by adding a polymer dispersion that is resistant to acids (Luhydran® S 938 T)

Isobutanol Isobutanol 61.0 ≤ 1.0 1.4–1.7 ≤ 50 Medium to low MediumFor use in acid-curable wood coatings, a large proportion of acid has to be added to the resin

Radiation-curable systems

Coatings curable by UV radiation, electron beam, or excimer are a growing field in the

area of furniture and flooring. The advantages are obvious: instant curing, low energy

consumption, direct further processing, high scratch and chemical resistance, as well as

low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. BASF offers radiation-curable resins from

the Laromer® series as well as photoinitiators from the Irgacure® series for a broad range

of applications. Our Laromer® range has been classified as Sustainability Accelerators

with substantial contribution to sustainable development along the value chain.

Powerful alternatives to BPA-based epoxy acrylates

Laromer® PR 9119 is one of the first products in the market that achieves performance levels comparable to conventional epoxy acrylates – offering a powerful alternative to coatings based on bisphenol A (BPA). The substitution of BPA in coatings is already today the requirement for several applications and will become more and more important in different areas in future. Additionally, Laromer® UP 9096 and Laromer® UP 9118 are efficient alternatives to BPA-based resins.

Speedy curing, low odor

Irgacure® 127 and Irgacure® 754 are low VOC, thus low-odor photoinitiators with Irgacure® 127 being the best in class in cure speed.

Increased production efficiency

UV water-based resins allow for increased production efficiency vs. conventional dispersions and solvent- based coatings due to the fast curing in UV light. In BASF’s UV water-based portfolio, Laromer® UA 9095 is a good all-round resin showing good grain enhance-ment, low yellowing, high chemical resistance, and good physical drying in clear coats. Also for pig mented coatings, the product shows very good properties and can be efficiently cured with Irgacure® 819 DW.

Solvent-based systems

To enable long-lasting wood coatings, BASF offers a range of solvent-based disper-

sions as well as polyols for solvent-based 2K PU systems. Solvent-based systems

still represent a high share of the furniture and flooring industry. When assessed with

our Sustainable Solution Steering method, we identified our portfolio to meet basic

sustainability standards in the market.

High resistance and long durability

Acronal® acrylic resins are used particularly in combi-nation with nitrocellulose systems for wood coatings. Our wide range of hydroxyl functional acrylic copoly-mers is mainly cross-linked with polyisocyanates such as Basonat® for solvent-based 2K PU coatings.

Efficient mixing processes

Laropal® grinding resin with its outstanding compat-ibility with all the main binders and organic solvents makes it the preferred solution for universal mixing systems and pigmented pastes alike. Furthermore, this highly flexible product reduces inventory.
