Health amp Safety - News
Leading safety bodies and practitioners have jointly called on the UK government to halt deregulation of safety and health legislation in light of last weekrsquos Grenfell Tower fire
In an open letter to Prime Minister Theresa May more than 70 leading organisations and figures from the UKrsquos safety and health profession including IOSH the British Safety Council and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents have asked her to ldquoscrap the governmentrsquos approach to health and safety deregulation and think againrdquo
The group has also pressed the Government to complete its review of Part B of the Building Regulations 2010 ndash the regulations which cover fire safety in and around buildings in England ndash as a matter of urgency and to focus on improving safety in the forthcoming parliament
The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) International Institute of Risk amp Safety Management (IIRSM) National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Trades Union Congress (TUC) and Unite the union have also backed the letter alongside senior OSH professionals from organisations including Park Health and Safety Skanska and Thames Water
ldquoWe believe it is totally unacceptable for residents members of the public and our emergency services to be exposed to this level of preventable risk in modern-day Britainrdquo the letter states
ldquoAt this crucial time of national reflection and sorrow we urge all politicians to re-emphasise the need for effective health and safety regulation and competent fire risk management These are fundamental to saving lives and sustaining our communities
ldquoWe believe it is vital that this disaster marks a turning point for improved fire safety awareness and wider appreciation that good health and safety is an investment not a costrdquo
The fire at the 24-storey Grenfell Tower public housing block on 14 June gutted the majority of the building 79 people are listed as dead or missing Fire experts have drawn attention to the fact that part B of the Building Regulations 2010 has not been thoroughly reviewed since 2006 though most other parts of the regulations have been revised at two-yearly intervals
In calling on the government to complete its review of Part B the signatories add
ldquoTogether we offer our organisationsrsquo support in undertaking the review ndash we all have valuable links to experts in this area who can advise on best regulatory outcomes In the meantime we welcome the governmentrsquos commitment to act and to implement the interim findings of the forthcoming public inquiry
ldquoYou have it in your power to remove immediately a further risk to people at work and outside of the workplace ndash unwise deregulation ndash which threatens public and worker safetyrdquo
The letter has been posted on at the IOSH site where additional signatories are invited

The Social Model of Disability
Many of you will already know this book maybe from your own childhood or indeed by reading it to your own children Whatever your reasons for knowing this book Winnie the Witch has been a firm classic across the generations but did you know it had a hidden meaning The book is enjoyed by children and adults alike but who would of thought that you could use this as a tool to teach the social model of disability
Letrsquos explainhellip When they created Winnie the Witch Korky Paul as illustrator and Valerie Thomas as author produced a fun way for children to learn about colour They also created a unique and valuable tool for teaching children and many adults too about different ways of thinking about the social model of disability Herersquos how the story goes In this reading of the story
Winnie represents society the house represents the environment Wilbur represents people with impairments or differences the birds represent attitudes of everybody else in society
What is the problem Winnie finds Wilbur a problem because his black fur cant be seen in her black house He gets in the way We say Society treats disabled people as a problem
Fixing disabled people Winnie uses her skills to change Wilbur a little thinking a green Wilbur will be less trouble in her black house She doesnt ask if he wants to be green because she thinks she knows best We say Society tries to change or fix individuals with impairments or differences even when they are not ill or in pain
What is normal Wilbur is still a problem Winnie makes another bigger change to Wilbur but makes Wilbur very unhappy because he wants to be himself Winnie has created an attitude that lets even the birds think they can laugh at Wilbur We say People with impairments or differences dont want to be changed to fit in to normal society They want to be themselves equals just as they are taking part and contributing to society The wrong change creates social attitudes that lead to individuals being treated disrespectfully just as the right change can make sure everyone is equal and respected
Change society Winnie decides to change her house and keep Wilbur as he is They can both live happily in the colourful house We say Changes in society remove barriers for everybody The moral of the story is it is better to change our environment and attitudes rather than try to change people with impairments or differences

Health amp Wellbeing Instagram is rated as the worst social media platform when it comes to its impact on young peoples mental health a UK snapshot survey suggests
The poll asked 1479 people aged 14-24 to score popular apps on issues such as anxiety depression loneliness bullying and body image Instagram said keeping the platform a safe and supportive place for young people was a top priority Mental health charities urged companies to act to increase users safety
Inadequacy and anxiety The Royal Society for Public Health study says social platforms should flag up heavy social media use and identify users with mental health issues Instagram says it provides tools and information on how to cope with bullying and warns users before they view certain content
The RSPH report says that social media may be fuelling a mental health crisis in young people
However it can also be used as a tool for good the report said Instagram for example was found to have a positive effect on self-expression and self-identity About 90 of young people use social media - more than any other age group - so they are particularly vulnerable to its effects although it is not clear what these are on current evidence The online survey asked participants a series of questions about whether YouTube Instagram Snapchat Facebook and
wwwprostartukcouk Page 8 of 11
Twitter had an impact on their health and well-being Participants were asked to score each platform on 14 health and well-being issues
Based on these ratings YouTube was considered to have the most positive impact on mental health followed by Twitter and then Facebook
Snapchat and Instagram were given the lowest scores overall Wild West Shirley Cramer chief executive of the RSPH said It is interesting to see Instagram and
Snapchat ranking as the worst for mental health and well-being - both platforms are very image-focused and it appears they may be driving feelings of inadequacy and anxiety in young people
In light of the findings public health experts are calling for social media platforms to introduce a series of checks and measures to help tackle mental health including
Pop-ups warning people that they have used social media for a long time (supported by 70 of young people surveyed)
Social media platforms identifying users with mental health problems and discreetly signposting places they can get support
Platforms highlighting when photos have been digitally manipulated - for example fashion brands celebrities and other advertising organisations could sign up to a voluntary code allowing a small icon to be displayed on digitally altered photos
The report also recommends that NHS England comes up with a vetting scheme for health and well-being information so young people are better able to judge whether information is trustworthy
Ms Cramer added As the evidence grows that there may be potential harms from heavy use of social media and as we upgrade the status of mental health within society it is important that we have checks and balances in place to make social media less of a wild West when it comes to young peoples mental health and well-being
Tom Madders from mental health charity YoungMinds said the recommendations could help many young people
Increasing safety within social media platforms is an important step and one we urge Instagram and other sites to act upon
But its also important to recognise that simply protecting young people from particular content types can never be the whole solution
He said young people needed to understand the risks of how they behaved online and should be taught how to respond to harmful content that slips through filters
Michelle Napchan Instagram head of policy said Keeping Instagram a safe and supportive place where people feel comfortable expressing themselves is our top priority - particularly when it comes to young people
Every day people from all over the world use Instagram to share their own mental health journey and get support from the community For those struggling with mental health issues we want them to be able to access support on Instagram when and where they need it
Thats why we work in partnership with experts to give people the tools and information they need while using the app including how to report content get support for a friend they are worried about or directly contact an expert to ask for advice on an issue they may be struggling with
