Northern Ontario Entrepreneur Program

Capital costs related to starting a new business and marketing costs totalling up to 20% eligible project costs.

Conditional contributions.

Assistance generally will not exceed 50% of eligible costs up to $125,000.

Residents of Northern Ontario who are planning to start their own for-profit businesses in the North.

Northern Ontario Entrepreneur Program

Blueprints Jewellery Design Studio (North Bay)

The NOHFC provided funding to support the establishment of a jewellery gallery to be used for the manufacture of jewellery products, workshops, and sales. The NOHFC provided $8 800 in funding towards project costs of $20 600.

 

Pencil and Mouse Restoration Design and Artwork (Timmins)

The NOHFC provided funding for a new business doing design work and the development of marketing and promotional materials. The NOHFC provided $1 337 in funding towards project costs of $3 260.

Northern Ontario Entrepreneur Program

Soomer Photography (North Bay)This project was to establish a full-service creative graphic design, web design, and photography business. The NOHFC provided funding of $17,718 towards project costs of $83,384.

Northern Sights Studio Gallery and Coffee House (Red Rock)This project was to establish a studio gallery and coffee shop, which will provide North-Western Ontarians with a unique and inclusive art gallery, featuring art composed by North-Western Ontarians. The NOHFC funded $34,515 out of $69,030 in total project costs.

Northern Ontario Young Entrepreneur Program

Capital costs related to starting a new business such as office furniture, fixtures, and equipment.

Conditional contributions

Assistance generally will not exceed 85% of eligible costs up to $25,000.

Residents of Northern Ontario 18 to 29 years old (inclusive) who are planning on starting their own businesses in the North.

Northern Ontario Young Entrepreneur Program

Arts North (Sudbury) A dance and fine art school offering instruction in various dance disciplines, musical theatre, painting and sketching.  It will offer training to beginners and advanced students. The project includes the purchase the equipment, machinery, furnishings and advertising to accommodate the start up. The NOHFC provided funding of $25,000 towards projects costs of $45,000.

VillEdge Art (Thunder Bay)Created an art studio and gallery providing space to local artisans to practice their art and display their art work.  A n in-house artist has been engaged as a teacher to guide the artists and provide instruction if required. Classes are held on-site or off-site in schools, homes, or other venues. The NOHFC provided funding of $25,000 towards project costs of $32,100.

Print-making Studio, Teaching Centre, and Art Gallery (Manitoulin Island)The development of a print art studio and gallery, offering artists a place to learn new skills with access to the latest techniques of stone lithography and silk screening. The business will also provide art classes with work stations.  The NOHFC provided $14,000 in funding towards total project costs of $16,470.

Co-op Placements

• Generally will not exceed 50% of a wage subsidy to a maximum of $6.00 per hour to hire post-secondary students from Northern Ontario.

Internships

• Generally will not exceed 50% to a maximum of $27,500 annually for private sector employers 90 per cent to a maximum of $27,500 annually for public sector employers to hire recent college and university graduates from Northern Ontario.

Arts Council of Sault Ste. Marie and District (SSM)Project Development Officer InternThe opportunity expanded the intern’s knowledge of the arts community in SSM as well as enabled the intern to develop project planning and grant writing skills.  NOHFC funding $27,500.00

Application Process for NOHFC Programs

• Two stage application process – Best Practice is to consult with local MNDMF representatives as a first step – engage early!

• Applications are initially reviewed for eligibility by the NOHFC Program Staff based on the published program guidelines and program policy.

• All applicants receive a written response from the NOHFC regarding eligibility. If eligible, next steps will be outlined in the correspondence.

• Eligible private sector applications are evaluated by NOHFC’s due diligence provider (Deloitte & Touche).

• Eligible public sector applications are evaluated by the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry.

• NOHFC Committees review the evaluations and make recommendations to the Board.

• The NOHFC Board makes the final decision regarding NOHFC approvals.
