Your study programme

I am delighted to welcome you to Coulsdon Sixth Form College’s prospectus for 2019.

Coulsdon Sixth Form College is a great place for young people to study. We are highly experienced and successful in guiding our students to achieve their qualifications and move on to the next step of their lives – whether that is university, an apprenticeship or employment.

We offer a ‘mix and match’ programme of studies. This means you can choose to study A Levels with BTECs or just purely A Levels or BTECs. We have found this offers students much more choice and flexibility when it comes to creating their timetable. All our teachers are specialist sixth form teachers and coupled with our state-of-the-art facilities and excellent support, we will support you to achieve your goals.

After receiving ‘Good’ in Ofsted for the second time in April 2018 and 99% pass rate, there has never been a better time to be part of the community at Coulsdon Sixth Form College.

This prospectus has been created to give an overview of the College but our Open Events are the best place to get a feel of the College. You have a chance to chat to staff and students, ask questions about courses and arm yourself with all the information you need to make an informed choice post-16.

I, and all the staff here, look forward to meeting you at one of our events throughout the year and welcoming you to the College as a student in September 2019.

All our staff are specialists in working with 16-19 year-olds and are committed to helping each and every student to achieve.

3 Excellent ‘extra-curricular’ activities

4 Great results and destinations for students

With a 99% pass rate in the last four years, students make excellent progress, enabling them to go to the university of their choice or into employment, which in many cases, is an Apprenticeship.

your study Programme

Coulsdon Sixth Form College offers a wide range of courses designed to develop students’ interests and skills, allowing for a smooth progression into employment or onto higher education.

Level 3 Programme of StudyThis is a two year programme where students study A Level subjects or BTEC National courses and, if necessary, re-take Maths or English if they have not yet achieved Grade 4 at GCSE.

What is the ‘mix and match’ offer?

Unlike many school sixth forms, students at Coulsdon Sixth Form College have the option to ‘mix and match’ A Levels with BTEC Level 3 courses, or opt to study all A Levels or all BTECs. This means students have the flexibility to tailor-make their study programmes to best suit their interests, learning styles, abilities and aspirations.

What are the entry qualification requirements for Level 3 courses?

Students wishing to study Level 3 programmes need to achieve at least four GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above. Students wishing to include A Levels in their programmes need to achieve at least five GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above, with at least two at Grade 5 or above. In addition to these general entry requirements, some courses, particularly A Level subjects have specific entry requirements. See pages 6 -7 or our website for course specific information.

How many units are students expected to take?

The majority of students are encouraged to create a programme which incorporates three ‘units’ in their first year where one unit is the equivalent to one A Level. See the table which shows the various sizes of BTEC qualifications and their equivalence to A Level sizes.

How do I decide between A Levels and BTECs?

A Levels: If students enjoy an intellectual challenge and are good at understanding concepts and applying them, they will probably be suited to A Level study. Most A Levels are not directly job related and, because of this, it is possible for students to keep their options open about career and higher education choices.

BTECs: BTEC Level 3 courses are practical, work-related courses that are assessed mainly through coursework although a few of those offered at Coulsdon now have some external assessments. BTECs are recognised by universities and employers alike as suitable entry qualifications for university courses, apprenticeships and graduate training programmes.

How are the BTEC qualifications structured?

Level 2 Programme of StudyThis one year programme is designed for students who do not qualify for the Level 3 Programme but who have a minimum of two GCSEs Grade 3 plus three GCSEs at Grade 2, these must include English Language and Mathematics.

Students who successfully complete the Level 2 Programme can stay on at College to do BTEC Level 3 courses (for a further two years) before progressing onto higher education or employment.

BTEC Level 2 Awards

These are practical, work-related courses that introduce learners to their chosen employment area and provide a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification, or directly into employment. The BTEC Level 2 Award is equivalent to one GCSE (Grade 9 -4) and is assessed via a combination of coursework and external assessment.

GCSEs

The College offers GCSEs in English and Mathematics. Students may combine these within an Intermediate or Advanced Level Programme of study.

The Government requires that students who have not achieved a Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and Mathematics retake these qualifications during their time at College.

What’s next?Once applications are received, students are invited to an interview to discuss the courses they are interested in studying and their suitability for them (based on their predicted GCSE grades).

Most students delay making a final decision about their Programme of Study until they have received their GCSE results in August.

FacilitiesThe facilities at Coulsdon Sixth Form College are exceptional. The College is housed in a stunning three storey building that provides students with outstanding learning facilities.

Light, contemporary classrooms are complemented by superb learning resource centres, enabling students to work independently in their area between lessons. Specialist classrooms for areas including Science, Visual Arts, Music and Media all have the latest equipment and resources.

The Independent Learning Centre on the ground floor has a suite of over 100 computers and a variety of different resources, including magazines and periodicals. There are quiet areas for learning and reading and a separate room for silent study.

The Refectory, on the ground floor, has glass doors leading to a covered courtyard – a perfect outside space to eat and mix with friends throughout the year.

The Sport and Performance Centre is home to Sport, Public Services and Performing Arts. Here you’ll find the College’s theatre, sports hall and gym. Outside are netball and tennis courts, an all-weather pitch, extensive playing fields and landscaped gardens.

Information TechnologyStudents and staff have their own user area on the network with email, internet and Moodle access across campus. The College has over 1,000 computers, equipped with industry-standard software and specialist educational programmes.

Macs are available for all Art, Music and Media students who are required to use specialist packages for their courses, which in turn prepares them for the world of work.

In addition to the latest laptop and desktop devices, the College has a number of iPads available for student use and students can also connect their own devices to the College’s internet should they need to, saving their work to the cloud.

The College seeks to use technology both to enhance and enrich students’ learning experiences and prepare them for modern day working life. The College places strong emphasis on staff training and development and constantly reviews and updates its facilities so that students can benefit from both new ways of accessing materials and advances in learning support materials.

George, 2017

here to helPTutorial ProgrammeEvery student has a Personal Tutor who is responsible for providing the support and guidance all students need, at some stage, during their time at College. To guarantee regular contact, the tutor also teaches the student. Senior Tutors are responsible for the organisation of the pastoral side of College life, together with the student’s Personal Tutor. They monitor progress and offer additional advice and guidance with regards to achievement and future ambitions.

Tutors are the main point of contact between the College and parents, with the aim that both parties feel free to contact each other about any problem affecting a student’s work.

Academic monitoring and reportingStudents are monitored closely by their teachers and are issued with an individual learning plan, which includes targets relating to attendance, effort and achievement; this plan is updated and monitored on a regular basis. This means that each student’s welfare and academic progress is under constant review. The College puts great emphasis on developing close links with the home and parents are always welcome in the College.

Reports are sent to parents four times a year and consultation evenings allow parents to discuss progress with the relevant subject staff.

Learning SupportWe are committed to inclusive education and set out to ensure every student is given the opportunity to make the most of their individual skills and abilities. Support and advice is provided by both teaching staff and tutors, with extra, specialist support provided where needed.

Coulsdon Sixth Form College has a friendly and non-judgemental approach to Learning Support. Students’ needs are assessed at every opportunity, from their initial interview and throughout their College life. When a school, family or individual student tells us about their situation we will work together with them to create individual plans to support students whether with physical, learning or sensory disabilities or those who do not have English as a first language. This plan could include examination concessions such as extra time or a reader, in class support, out of class support or specific resources to help with study. Once this plan is established students will study alongside their classmates in the normal way. We have a big team of trained Learning Facilitators to provide support in and out of class.

The Learning Support room is a large area with resources for students to use. The environment is very welcoming and you will find one to one support or students just working in the quiet environment throughout the day.

Independent Learning and the Learner Improvement ProgrammeAs at university and school, all students are expected to carry out several hours of independent study a week, to build on lesson ‘contact’ time. Students will not do well unless they commit to doing this right from the start of their courses. The College sets out to encourage and develop independent learning skills and strongly recommends that students make full use of the Independent Learning Centre (ILC), where staff are always on hand to offer advice and assistance.

The ILC houses a suite of 100 computers that gives students the opportunity to complete independent study during College hours.

The College has a virtual learning environment (Moodle) which can be accessed from a home computer, as well as from the College network. This is an interactive system enabling students to access online course material and e-books, to support their studies and contains assessments and independent learning activities. It forms a vital basis of support for all students outside lessons and contains a variety of media to make learning more enjoyable.

The ILC is also home to LIP (Learner Improvement Programme), where a dedicated area has been set up for students to attend timetabled sessions to catch-up on work or complete tasks under supervision.

CounsellingAlthough tutors are always happy to discuss problems, sometimes it is easier to talk things over with someone who can offer more objective advice. The College employs a qualified counsellor and welfare officer who can provide confidential advice on a range of issues and can refer students to other sources of support. The College has policies and procedures that are in line with the Croydon Safeguarding Children Board to ensure the safety of all students.

FinanceThe government’s 16-19 Bursary Fund is available to students who might be experiencing financial difficulties. More details and an application form will be available at enrolment, along with any help which may be available from the Local Authorities.

Why did you apply to Coulsdon Sixth Form College? I wanted the freedom of independence to complete my work while still being supported by teachers. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after College so I liked the diversity of courses at Coulsdon and not being on a fixed path. I selected courses which I thought I would enjoy and I am!

You are looking to study Forensic Psychology, why? I have always had an interest in crime. I wonder why criminals commit crimes and so I want to study the science behind it more. I would like to go to university to study Psychology with Criminology.

How has the support been here at College? The teachers have been great. If I said I don’t know something, my teachers have supported me. There are also workshops which you can attend to help with your subjects.

What have you enjoyed about your time here? It has been wonderful to be able to study but feel relaxed at the same time. This stems from the independence you have here – organising your time yourself. I’ve also enjoyed meeting new people with similar interests to me.

What advice would you give to students looking to come to Coulsdon Sixth Form College? The teachers are really approachable so use them. Don’t feel pressured early on to get work out quickly. Take the time to do it well and ask for help if you need to.

Why did you apply to Coulsdon Sixth Form College? The College had the courses I wanted plus I could mix and match my programme allowing me to do BTECs alongside A Level Maths.

You have an Apprenticeship at the Royal Albert Hall, tell me a bit about that? I have been selected to study for my Level 3 Creative Venue Technician, working with lighting, rigging and sound. I have always wanted a career in music so an apprenticeship was the way forward for me. This apprenticeship really appealed to me because it will give me live technical work experience while gaining my qualifications.

The application process was difficult, starting with submitting my CV, going for an interview which was in front of a panel and a practical element. I am really excited about starting in July 2018.

How did the College support you through the process? The careers department helped me with work experience which helped me realise this was the route I wanted to take. My teachers were supportive before the interview giving me knowledge to study and learn!

What advice would you give other music students looking to come here? It is a great route if you love music. The teachers are supportive and treat you like an adult.

What made you choose Coulsdon Sixth Form College? The big appeal for me was the mix and match programme meaning I could do BTECs and A Levels together in one programme. Plus it was one of the few places that offered Fashion with such great facilities.

What are you enjoying most about your Fashion course? Fashion is my favourite subject so I love it all. We are given the freedom to design what we feel like so there is no stopping your imagination!

What would you like to do once you finish at Coulsdon? My plan is to continue studying fashion at university possibly at Rochester. I’d love to become a Fashion Designer.

How have you found the teachers support? Amazing. Throughout the whole course it has been good. The teachers in the Art department have an open door policy so you can pop in and chat to any of them about anything that is bothering you.

What advice would you give to students looking to come to Coulsdon Sixth Form College? You should think hard about the course you want to study. You need to be passionate about the subject especially if it is an Art subject. The work load is tough, so loving the subject helps.

extra-curricular cluBs, activities, triPs & visits

Clubs and ActivitiesIn an increasingly competitive world, the College recognises the importance of offering students the chance to enhance their CVs with activities outside their academic studies.

Universities and employers are attracted to students who have additional skills and qualities, rather than just good grades. The College aims to offer a wide range of cultural, community and sporting activities to help develop these skills and qualities, whilst providing enjoyment along the way!

Enrichment ProgrammeStudents are encouraged to take part in the College Enrichment Programme. This is a fantastic programme offering students the chance to get involved in a huge variety of extra-curricular clubs and activities that take place during timetabled ‘enrichment periods’ during or after the College day throughout the week.

The list of activities changes each term, but usually includes a mix of skill-based activities, recreational sports and career orientated clubs. Involvement in the programme can help students become more attractive to higher education institutions and employers, but above all, taking part is a great way of meeting new people, learning some new skills and having fun!

Progression DaysProgression days occur in June / July, when Lower Sixth students enjoy a break from timetabled lessons to take part in an action-packed few days of activities. It provides a chance for everyone involved to experience new situations and acquire new skills.

The week usually includes visits to theatres and places of historic interest, opportunities to take part in outdoor pursuits, personal fitness sessions and creative workshops and activities to help with career planning.

Duke of Edinburgh’s AwardThe Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a nationally recognised qualification for young people in the UK. It involves a challenging programme of activities designed to encourage students to learn new skills, help others and experience adventure. Employers and universities see the award as evidence of a student’s positive qualities and commitment. It is therefore no surprise that the College is an enthusiastic provider of the scheme.

At Coulsdon Sixth Form College students have the opportunity to sign up for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze and Silver Award, designed for young people aged 16-25 years of age. Students can do the Silver Award without having done the Bronze Award. Completing the Silver Award requires a great deal of commitment for between 12 and 18 months, but when completed results in a great sense of personal achievement.

Trips and visitsThe College is keen to enhance students’ classroom learning via a variety of trips and visits, covering most subject areas. These have recently included a Travel & Tourism Trip to Corfu, a Spanish trip to Salamanca, a Politics trip to the House of Lords and Parliament, a Geography Field trip to FSC Juniper Hall Field Centre, Art trips to both Tate Britain and Tate Modern and several BTEC Sport trips including a visit to St Mary’s University, Brighton University and an assault course at Take Shape in Bletchingley.

The College can provide some financial support for those students who would not normally be able to participate in compulsory educational visits.

Students’ UnionThe SU serves as the main link between the College’s senior management team and the student body. The SU is elected annually, by fellow students.

A nationally recognised organisation, the SU allows students to become involved in activities and events in and outside of College, throughout the academic year. Students are also expected to act as Student Ambassadors for open events at the College.

How are you enjoying the Redhill Football Academy? I’ve played since I was 5 so have always been into football. When I joined the College, I signed up for the football activity club. Admissions and Enrolment Interviews. These are used to discuss career plans and help students choose the right programme to help them along their preferred path.

Tutorial Programme. All students follow a weekly tutorial programme that covers employability skills - from CV and personal statement writing, to presentation and interview skills.

Application of Learning. Whenever possible teachers flag where learning is relevant to, or can be applied in the world of work. Students learn about the importance of meeting deadlines, working in a team and appreciating the needs of others.

Meeting Employers. Students are given opportunities to meet employers through the College’s visiting speaker events, apprenticeship and employment fairs and external visits.

The College has good relationships with a number of employers, for example: Croydon University Hospital, Gatwick Airport, Fulham Football Club, the Hilton Group, Chequers and VideoBloggers.com.

Progression Days. These provide time and opportunities for students to reflect on their achievements and plan for the future.

Careers Department Support. A well resourced Careers Department offers ad hoc support throughout the year.

Previous School: St Mark’s Academy

Subjects: Business, Science, Sociology

Why did you apply to Coulsdon Sixth Form College? I’d heard it was a good learning environment and it has turned out to be exactly that – peaceful and quiet.

You are part of the Fulham Academy, how have you found your first season? I love playing football, it’s my favourite sport. I’ve learnt so much about teamwork and developed my communication skills through the Academy.

How was the sign up process? Quite straightforward actually. I applied to the College and also to the Fulham programme. I was invited for a football trial which I passed. I just had to wait to receive my offer from the College and I was in. Training is weekly with matches once a week. I am really enjoying it.

What is your favourite subject? Sociology. I can express myself the most in this subject. I enjoy seeing how sociology is applied to society and the effects it has on people.

What are you plans after College? I want to go to university to study Sociology and Business.

Have you any advice for students looking to apply here? It’s an organised, well-maintained amazing environment to learn in. The teachers are always striving to help you succeed and get the best from you.

Student profile

Name: Aleksandra Bakowska

Previous School: Archbishop Lanfranc Academy

Subjects: Law, Psychology, Sociology

What made you apply to Coulsdon Sixth Form College? When I came for my interview, the staff were really friendly and encouraging and that is what made my mind up.

How have you found the transition from school to College? Easier than I thought it would be! I much prefer studying for A Levels than GCSEs. Concentrating on 3 subjects is easier; it means I can sort my time and focus more in-depth on each subject.

What has been your favourite subject? Law. I like knowing my rights and debating with the class.

What are your plans after College? I love horse riding outside of College and have been offered an Equestrian Apprenticeship at my stables.

Do you have any advice for prospective students? Don’t stress. You will find lots of new friends. The support from staff is great so don’t be afraid to ask. A Levels haven’t been as bad as I thought they would be!

Student profile

Name: Lloyd Rhodes-Brandon

Previous School: Greenshaw

Subjects: Film Studies, Music Technology, Sociology

Why did you apply to Coulsdon Sixth Form College? Nowhere else offered me the chance to mix and match my courses. Mixing them has allowed me to cross two avenues of learning and opened up a wider way of studying.

What’s your favourite subject, why? Music. I think of music like a language anyone can speak. You get to tell stories without words or pictures and I just feel like it enriches lives.

What are your plans after College? I would like to compose music for video games. The games industry is an interesting world with a lot of development still to happen. I’m looking to go straight into the industry.

How have you found the teaching? My Music teachers are always happy to give advice and discuss possibilities in the industry. I’ve connected with all the teachers and they are all really approachable.

Have you any advice for students looking to come here? It’s a really great place to study. I’m happier here than I’ve ever been at school. There is a strong sense of diversity and empathy. The College respects all career avenues so whatever you want to achieve, you will be supported.
