West Bengal State University (Barasat, North 24 Parganas) was established by the Government of West Bengal through an Act (Act XXVIII of 2007)

passed by the Legislative Assembly. The creation of the university took into account a long-standing public demand for setting up a university in this

district. The university started functioning from the academic session 2008-09. Further, the State Government, through a notification (No 300-Edn

(U)/IU-38/08 dated the 26th May 2008), transferred 57 colleges, formerly affiliated to the University of Calcutta, to the newly established University.

The logo of the University comprises a traditional Indian earthen lamp (Pradeep) which is underlined with a motto (lakshya vishwamanam). The

lighted lamp signifies the enlightenment of the individual soul leading to the realization of one’s self as an integral part of the vast cosmos. Further,

men unite in light and become separated in darkness. The logo speaks the hope of a unified enlightened future community.

The University has progressed a lot over last one year. Work on the LAN and WAN is progressing as the University envisages e-enabled classrooms,

library and offices. A large volume of the university’s communications with students, affiliated colleges and University faculty is through the

extensive use of the ICT infrastructure. It is already apparent that this ensures instant communication and therefore is the basic infrastructure for

efficient governance.

The University had problems but many of the problems have been overcome by now under able leadership which is presently trying tooth and nail

to march forward with utmost sincerity.

Department of Sociology The Department of Sociology in West Bengal State University since its

inception in 2008 is committed to link the aims of the discipline with the

mission of the University of “Lakshya Vishwamanam” through achieving

excellence in the scholarly activities of teaching, discovering newer forms

of pedagogy, enhancing the ability to think critically about society, to

collect and analyze information about contemporary social issues, training

for career opportunities and scholarly pursuits, and imbibing aspiration

among students to continually apply the gained knowledge. The

Department is committed to the principles of freethinking-knowledge and

supporting the students to "imagine sociologically" so that they are

empowered to define, analyze, and understand: human behavior, the

structures and patterns of everyday life, the interplay between life

histories, changing narrations and their intersections within social

structures and examine persisting social arrangements critically with

interdisciplinary temper, recognizing the diversity of our lived experience

in this globalizing world. To imbibe a practice among students to question

critically, think logically, communicate clearly, act resourcefully, and live

ethically the faculty of the Department of Sociology are united in seeking

to provide a high quality educational program for students. This allows our

students to prepare on the one hand for a broad spectrum of jobs in today's

competitive labor market and on the other to pursue higher degrees in

Sociology and related disciplines. The Department’s faculty members

combine their commitment to research with a devotion to teaching. The

department offers a variety of courses each year, spanning a range of

faculty and student interest. The faculty works closely with students in

small workshop settings and through personalized instruction and

collaboration. Many Sociologists, around the country are part of the Post

Graduate Field in Sociology, and participate extensively and quite

frequently in a broad and vibrant intellectual activity of the department.

Firm and generous University support has allowed the department to

compete effectively for research resources, external recognition, and

prospective students. There are a few key areas in the WBSU P.G.

Sociology syllabus which set its distinctiveness from other university

courses. The department offers four compulsory core papers, one in each

semester, on sociological theory. With a strong hold on theory the syllabus

tends to orient the students towards sound research. Two papers are

allotted to research methodology and a full paper on dissertation. Courses

on ‘Media and Society’ are the unique areas of specialization on offer by

the department. Sociology of gender is also a defining feature of the

course. Unlike the dominant trend, of the post graduate courses, of

incorporating gender as an add-on to the existing syllabus, WBSU

Sociology seeks to establish the issue of gender in its own right. Social

exclusion, religion and industry are the other thrust areas of the post-

graduate course. Besides its regular courses, the department facilitates

lively discussions of research in progress through regular workshops and

seminars in the field of Research Methodology, Sociological Theory,

Indian culture and inequality, social demography, gender and sexuality,

and developmental sociology. The departmental faculty members are also

active contributors to sociological knowledge through research,

publications, and community interventions within their respective areas of

specialization. The combined strength of our departmental faculty in areas

of scholarship and community intervention includes: social/structural

inequality; the intersections of caste, class, gender and sexualities;

contemporary social issues and problems, social institutions and

organizations, development, globalization and displacement. Three batches

of students have successfully completed the Master degree program in the

department and about six scholars are in the process of registration for the

Ph.D program. Apart from dissertations, students are regularly evaluated

and scholarship are grounded on the values of academic and professional

uprightness, and excellence through creativity and collaboration.
