Philosophy

Philosophy literally translates as‘love of wisdom’ and is concernedwith questions such as: how should Ilive; do I experience the world as itreally is; what counts as genuineknowledge; can God’s existence beproven; and how should I makemoral decisions?

It is often argued that you can onlybecome truly free through questioningyour own ideas and values, perhaps

forcing you to rethink, modify oreven reject beliefs which you havealways accepted as true. StudyingPhilosophy, therefore, involves self-interrogation in an attempt to ‘knowthyself’. This view is neatly summedup by the Ancient Greek philosopher,Socrates, who declared that “theunexamined life is not worth living”.

As a student of philosophy, you will discuss, wrestle with, argue, read and writeabout the most intellectually stimulating and powerful questions mankind hasever contemplated!

Religious Studies

Religious Studies helps students todevelop and refine critical thinkingskills with a view to betterunderstanding the nature ofargumentation and how it can beused to support beliefs and valueswithin religion and ethics.

At AS, unit 1 topics covered includekey theories and practical issueswithin Ethics, the philosophy andpractices of the Eastern Religion,Buddhism. Unit 2 allows students

the opportunity to study a topicwithin Religious Studies in depthwith a view to writing an extendedessay for examination. There is anemphasis on independent, but closelyguided, learning in this unit. At A2,unit 3 involves a broadening anddeepening of understanding withinthe two chosen strands of Ethics andBuddhism, with the final unitinvolving the close study of threeessays written by influential scholars.

Religious Studies tends to be bestsuited to students who are hard-working, open-minded andenthused by the big questions in life.Competency in essay writing is alsodesirable due to the nature ofassessment in the subject.

A-Level Religious Studies at Connell College is a subject which offers students, whether religious, agnostic or atheist, an exciting opportunity to explore andcritically examine key themes, issues and debates surrounding religion,
