MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As our society becomes more connected and more global, and science and technology open up new opportunities in areas we can barely yet imagine, tomorrow’s leaders will need to be more adaptable, more versatile and more open minded than ever before in order to succeed.

In addition to core professional competencies, they will need enhanced communication skills and a well-developed understanding of the world and the different societies, cultures and points of view that surround us.

Leading companies are already demanding this wider breadth of skills in their graduate employees and it is for this reason that Centennial College is creating an educational environment designed to prepare students for this challenging world.

Founded in the centenary year of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Centennial College is a self-financed tertiary education institution established by HKU to continue the university’s heritage and traditions of providing the highest quality of education in keeping with the demands of the times.

Centennial College is committed to academic freedom and providing a multidisciplinary, liberal education and active learning culture to give students the skills to communicate, solve problems and develop a habit of independent learning that will equip them to meet whatever challenges that lie ahead.

What sets Centennial College apart, is our belief that education is more than just about preparing for

a good career, it is about preparing for a fine and meaningful life: a life of personal growth, fulfilment and achievement.

Throughout our courses, English, as today’s predominant global medium of communication, is emphasised. We also strive to build close relationships between staff and students and encourage teamwork wherever we can. Cooperation, understanding and respect for others will be the keys to success in tomorrow’s world and are the foundations of our teaching practices at Centennial College.

We believe that as we focus on quality teaching and care for the well-being of our students, we will establish a reputation for Centennial College that we can all be truly proud of.

As the founding President of Centennial College, may I offer you a warm welcome to the College.

Professor John MalpasPresident

OFFERING A LIBERAL EDUCATION

Our College focuses on liberal education with an aim to nurturing students who have analytical minds, critical thinking skills, creativity and the ability to learn independently.

Our programmes are based on non-traditional curriculum that will not only give our students a broader range of knowledge and skills, but also a global view and understanding of the wider world which employers are increasingly looking for in fresh graduates today. In view of this, our curriculum is designed in a way that it not only imparts practical skills to our students in their chosen specialty, but also helps expand their minds and intellect with a broad range of knowledge and understanding, thereby providing them with a firm foundation for lifelong development, creative thinking, adaptation and learning.

CHANGING TIMES, CHANGING DEMANDS

Leading companies are demanding a far broader range of skills in their graduate employees than ever before. Today, students are expected to have an advanced understanding of the world and societies around them. They need good language proficiency and superior skills in communication, presentation and analysis. Above all, they need the ability to learn independently, think creatively and approach new ideas with a fresh and open mind. That is what Centennial College is geared to providing.

CULTIVATE AN ALL-ROUND TALENT

In facing different opportunities and challenges in the 21st century, our society requires not only specialised talents, but also people with an analytical mind who have the ability to think critically and creatively as well as to learn independently.

At Centennial College, our programmes are structured to balance protean intellect and specialised knowledge. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the College nurtures students to acquire a keen disposition to explore and inquire, placing an emphasis on widening their horizons.

A BROAD AND INTERDISCIPLINARY CURRICULUM

Our broad-based curriculum not only helps students acquire superior skills in their chosen profession, but also gain significant strengths in a wide range of fields including economics, politics, culture, languages, history of civilisation, technology, statistics, environmental studies, music and literature.

Our programmes have four components:

• Generic Studies (including languages, IT and numeracy)• General Education (including humanities, life science and social sciences)• Foundation courses for specialised Majors • Major and elective courses

Each Major also features a cross-disciplinary “capstone” course that helps students develop a wide base of knowledge and learn how to apply it in real-life situations.

COLLEGIALITY BETWEEN TEACHERSAND STUDENTS

Centennial College strives to build close relationships between staff and students and encourages teamwork wherever possible. Cooperation, understanding and respect for others will be the keys to success in tomorrow’s world and constitute the foundations of our teaching practices.

The College has been designed as an intimate environment for teaching and learning where students can feel relaxed and mix easily with other classmates and teaching staff. Our class size is relatively small so as to facilitate a two-way learning process and emphasise the experience of learning in small groups. Our approach towards teaching and learning highlights the importance of taking everyone’s views into consideration, sharing knowledge and responsibility, and collaborating with peers in order to foster interaction, sociability and a team spirit among all members of the College community. Students are assigned a faculty member who acts in the capacity of their academic advisor and provides them with all necessary advice and guidance to achieve their academic goals.

OUT-OF-CLASSROOM LEARNING

The College also places emphasis on interactive teaching and out-of-classroom learning experiences. Students are provided with opportunities to participate in field trips, visits, study tours, service learning as well as internships. Some of these activities, such as the credit-bearing “Accounting Internship” course, are incorporated into the curriculum.

Besides, the College has been networking with employers from various sectors, including commercial firms, non-government organisations and government departments, to provide summer work experience to our students.

During the summer holiday, Centennial College offered me a summer internship opportunity. This trained my cooperation and communication skills, and equipped me for my future career.

Centennial College provides a good learning atmosphere with professional and lively tuition during the lectures. Students and professors can interact and get to know each other more easily.

Throughout the semester, we get to organise some activities for our schoolmates such as the Winter Ball and the Singing Contest.
