FOOD PRICES IN THE WORLD MARKET HAVE INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY OVER PAST FEW YEARS, WHICH IS NOT A TEMPORARY PHENOMENON. THE ADVANCED UTILIZATION OF FOOD FOR ENERGY HAS RESULTED IN A FOOD PRICES’ ESCALATION. IT IS WELL BELIEVED THAT THIS TREND WILL CONTINUE IN THE FUTURE.

THE CURRENT ESCALATION OF FOOD PRICES THREATENS THE FULFILLMENT OF HUMAN’S BASIC NEEDS; INCREASES INSTABILITY OF POLITICS AND ECONOMY; AND HINDERS POVERTY ERADICATION PROCESS IN MANY COUNTRIES. BASED ON FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION (FAO)’S REPORT, 1.923 MILLIONS OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION SUFFERED FROM FOOD SCARCITY IN 2007, WHICH IS ABOUT 80 MILLIONS HIGHER COMPARED TO 1990 -1992.

THE WORLD’S FOOD DEMANDS SHOULD ENCOURAGE PRODUCER COUNTRIES TO INCREASE THEIR PRODUCTIONS, BOTH TO FULFILL THEIR OWN NEEDS AND TO SUPPLY THE WORLD. THIS OPPORTUNITY SHOULD BE USED TO OPTIMALLY PROMOTE THE UTILIZATION OF POTENTIAL RESOURCES FOR WELFARE AND PROSPERITY OF THE COUNTRY AND CITIZEN.

INDONESIA IS KNOWN AS AN AGRICULTURAL AND MARITIME COUNTRY WITH VAST AGRICULTURAL AREAS, CONDUCIVE CLIMATE AND RAINFALL, AND A SUFFICIENTLY LABOR FORCE. INDONESIA ALSO HAS LONG COASTLINES (AROUND 81,000 KM), SIZABLE SEAS AND MANY TYPES OF FISH. THE TROPICAL CLIMATE OF INDONESIA SUPPORTS A FASTER AND SUSTAINABLE FISH REPRODUCTION.

FOOD PRODUCTION IN INDONESIA CAN STILL BE ENHANCED TO ACHIEVE A STRONGER NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY AND A LARGER CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLD’S FOOD SUPPLY.
