Technical Remarks on Safety

The unit conforms with the safety requirements ofthe standards mentioned in the Technical Data chapter.

Correct Use

The Prosetter 52/74/102 is a laser imagesetter forimaging offset printing plates and may only be usedfor this purpose as described in the customer docu-

mentation.Do not place any objects or liquids on the device.Ventilation outlets must be kept clear at all times.

General

The Prosetter 52/74/102 is to be installed by autho-rized service personnel only. The ambient conditionsmust be observed.

Warning: Unauthorized opening of of any parts ofthe casing not specifically referred to in the operatingmanual and inexpert repairs can lead to considerabledanger for the user.

Service work may only be performed by authorizedpersonnel trained for this purpose. The respectiveaccident prevention regulations must be observed atall times.

Non-observance of accident prevention regulationscan lead to the loss of accident insurance cover.

Emergency Switch

All mechanical motions in the device are stopped andthe invisible laser beam is switched off when theemergency switch is used. Use these switches in casesof emergency only. These are located on both sides ofthe device.

On/Off button

The Prosetter 52/74/102 is only de-energized by theOn/Off button.

All plugs and sockets of the equipment units are to bereadily accessible, because you must unplug thepower cable to completelycut offallpower to theequipment (for example, in dangerous situations).

When connecting or disconnecting the power cable,only ever hold the cable at the plug and make sure

that your hands are not wet. A damaged power cablecan cause leakage currents and electric shocks. Pro-tect the power cable from being damaged. Never placeany heavy objects upon it and do not allow it to get

jammed.

Laser Safety

The Laser Imagesetter is a Class 1 laser product.

This means that the invisible laser radiation pro-duced in the unit is shielded by means of protectivecovers.

If used as directed, the user is never exposed to dan-ger from the laser beam.

The laser system used in the Prosetter 52/74/102 is aClass 3B system (up to 500 mW).

many must appoint a laser safety officer in accor-

dance with the Accident Prevention Regulations (BGVB2) from the Professional Trade Association.

Servicing may only be carried out by Heidelberg

personnel who have been trained by appropriate

laser protection officers for this purpose.

Service and Maintenance

Service work may only be carried out by personsauthorized by Heidelberg.The respective accident prevention regulations mustbe observed at all times.

Warning: Never remove covers or any other parts ofthe casing except for the work described in the Serviceand Maintenance and Troubleshootingchapters. Whendoing so, keep to the stipulated sequence of opera-tions.

Otherwise, there is the danger of the invisible laserbeam causing injury to eyes and skin and/or fatal elec-tric shocks.

Warning: You may be exposed to dangerous radiationby the invisible laser beam if you use operating oradjustment equipment other than those mentionedin this documentation or if you follow other working

procedures.When carrying out work as described in the customerdocumentation, the user must always adhere to theoperating process stipulated. Protection from theinvisible laser beam is guaranteed by covers or safetyloops.The use of laser protection glasses is not in the plansas correct operation eliminates the need for these.

Safety Loop

For your safety, the output device is equipped with asafety loop. If the safety loop is interrupted, e.g. byopening the back panel, all mechanical movement isstopped and the invisible laser beam is switched off atthe exposure head.

Under no circumstances the safety system is to bebypassed as this might lead to eye or skin injuries dueto the invisible laser beam, crushing due to the optic

carriage or injuries due to electric shock.

1 Introduction

Description of the Unit and its Functions

The Prosetter 52/74/102 works as an imagesetter basedon the indrum principle and is used for imaging Post-ScriptTM, PDF and TIFF files onto metal printingplates.

These files are converted by the connected RIP (RasterImage Processor) and are then sent to the Prosetter52/74/102.

The Prosetter 52/74/102 has a V.24/LVDS interface fora RIP connection (e.g. Meta Dimension).

A violet laser, equipped with a wavelength of 405 nm,effects exposure on metal printing plates.

The printing plate is inserted manually via the feed-ing table. The Prosetter 52/74/102 automatically loadsthe printing plate to the mold images it, punches it(option) and then transports the imaged plate back to

the insertion table.

dots (pixels) per centimeter (lines/cm) or dots per inch(dpi) depends on the selected resolution.

The laser in the optical head emits a laser beamwhich is modulated (lightened/darkened) accordingto the video data transferred.The laser beam, formed correspondingly in the opti-cal head, is deflected via a rapidly rotating mirror.The deflected beam of the optical system moves in anaxial direction and exposes the printing plate line byline.

You can choose to have your Prosetter 52/74/102equipped with one of four different punching sys-tems. The different punching systems have up to amaximum of eight punching heads available.

The punches are located within the device. Theypunch the printing plate after exposure before finallyunloading the plate.

Installing the Device

The Prosetter 52/74/102 is to be installed by autho-rized service personnel only. The ambient conditionsmust be observed.

Attention: To avoid pre-exposure of the plates, the fol-lowing requirements must be met for the Prosetter52/74/102 installation site (without Prosetter SCL 52//102) or for the room where the plates will be handledbefore imaging:

For an Agfa Lithostar Plus LAP-V plate:

0 Lighting: Fluorescent tubes V50 (EncapSulite) orcomparable

0 Window panes: 478- -3mm 29090974 DIN 4102 B2or comparable

0 Monitor foils: Three layers V10 (EncapSulite) orcomparable

For a Fuji plate:

Attention: Other requirements apply if other platesare used. Please inquire at the respective plate manu-facturer for the requirements.

The floor at the installation site must be even andfirm.

Make sure that the device is installed at a sufficientdistance from walls and other objects so that ade-quate ventilation and quick access can be ensured.Minimum distances:

The unit should not be installed near air condition-ing equipment and is to be protected from humidityand direct sunlight.

Note: Initial installation is performed by service per-sonnel. This includes lifting the device off the palletand removing the transport safeguards.

Attention: To prevent any damage to the device, theside parts of the Prosetter 52/74/102 must not bepushed or pulled at (e.g. when moving the device).

Connecting the Device

Warning: Connect the connection cables with thepower off. Connect the connecting cables before youconnect the power cables of the front-end device, theRIP and the Prosetter 52/74/102.

The connection ports are to be found on the back ofthe device behind the covering.

You have to remove the covering on the back to beable to connect the power supply cables to the device.

Attention: Only use shielded cables for compliancewith the radio interference suppression regulations.

The power connection is made by means of the sup-plied power cable with a 3-pin plug that is designedfor 200 V - 240 V AC. The respective national regula-tions must be observed when connecting the deviceusing power cables not provided by Heidelberg or

when using adapted connectors.

The unit may only be operated if a grounded connec-tor is installed.

In the USA and Canada, power supply cables must at

least comply with type SJT.Warning: Connectors and outlet of the service linemust be easily accessible as the unit has to be com-pletely disconnected from power by pulling out thepower connector, for example, in hazardous situa-tions. The in-house installation socket must be placedat least 60 cm above the ground.

Warning: The power connection remains single-pole

when the unit is switched off. For this reason, alwayspull the power connector to disconnect the powersupply!

Software Installation (Container Version)

Requirements:

0 The Prosetter 52/74/102 as well as the workstationare switched on and ready for operation.

0 All Windows applications were run down.

0 Attention: A backup of the installed software ver-sion is saved to disk, see section Saving the Backupof Installed Software to Disk, page 29.

Operation:

1. Insert the Prosetter 52/74/102 installation CD into theCD-ROM drive.

With Autorun being activated the setup starts auto-matically.

2. If Autorun is disabled, you can start the setup by dou-ble-clicking "Setup.exe". The "CTP User Interface

Setup" window displays.

3. Click "Next". The "Choose Destination Location" win-dow displays.

4. Select the appropriate path by clicking the "Browse"button. You can also use the suggested path.

5. Click "Next". The "Select Program Folder" windowappears.

6. Choose one of the folders from the folder list, enter anew folder name or use the already suggested folder.

7. Click "Next". The "Select Com Port" window displays.

8. In the "Select Com Port" window, select the Com portthe Prosetter 52/74/102 is connected to.

9. Click "Next". The "Start Copying Files" window dis-plays.

10. Click "Next". The installation procedure is executed.

You will see the "Install Shield Wizard Complete" win-dow at the end of the installation procedure.

11. Click "Finish". This completes installation.

12. To start the Prosetter 52/74/102 user interface, select"Start > Programs > CTP > CTP User Interface" or usethe previously set path.

Saving the Backup of Installed Software to Disk

Requirements:

0 The Prosetter 52/74/102 as well as the workstationare switched on and ready for operation.

0 The Prosetter 52/74/102 GUI was started.

Operation:

1. Click "Service".

2. Select "Update" in the vertical menu bar.

3. Select the "Backup" tab.

4. Select "Save Configuration".

5. Click "Apply".The following directory is now saved to disk:C:\Programs\Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG\CTPUser Interface\package\ files\backup .

2. Select "Configuration" in the vertical menu bar.

3. Select the "Miscellaneous" dialog tab.

4. Select the language you want in "Language".

5. Click "Apply". The user interface switches over to theselected language.

Requirements:

0 There is no printing plate on the insertion table.

Operation:

Press the On/Off button on the Prosetter 52/74/102 asfar down as it will go before releasing.

The unit is now switched on.

Apart from inserting and removing the printingplates, the unit is operated via the RIP workstation.

Power-off of the Device

1. Click the "Switch off recorder" button in the Prosetter52/74/102 GUI.

2. You can switch off the device when the "Switch off theRecorder" message displays in the line to the right ofthe "Switch off recorder" button. To do this, press andhold the On/Off button (approx. 3 seconds) until youhear a signal. Release the On/Off button and immedi-ately press it again. The unit is switched off.

Note: If the signal sounds for a second time before

you have pressed the On/Off button for a second time,the switching off procedure must be repeated fromthe beginning.

Material Handling

Observe the following when handling printing plates:

0 Plate edges can be sharp. Put on protective gloves.This will protect you from injury.

0 Never touch the emulsion side of the printingplate with your bare hands. Finger prints will beproduced on the printing plate which canadversely affect the print quality.

0 The printing plates are very easily scratched. It istherefore essential to insert slip sheets when youplace printing plates on top of each other, so thatthey cannot scrape against each other.

0 Do not expose the printing plates to light and onlyas briefly as possible to yellow light because yellowlight will also cause pre-exposure.

Material storage

For the storage of printing plates,

0 prior to exposure,

0 after exposure and

0 after development,

various requirements apply which can be obtainedfrom the manufacturer of the printing plates.

Loading a printing plate

Warning: Do not put your fingers into the insertionslot in the insertion table. There is a risk of beingcrushed by the printing plate gripper approx. 30 cmbehind the insertion slot. If any parts have slippedthrough the insertion slot into the unit you mustremove the side panels to take them out, seesection Removing a printing plate or other partsfrom the exposure mold, page 316.

Warning: Plate edges can be sharp. Failure to wearprotective gloves can result in injuries to your hands.

1. Pull on protective gloves.

2. Take the requested printing plate from the packag-ing.

3. Remove all slip sheets or packaging materials which

may adhere to the plate.

Warning: Carefully remove all slip sheets or packag-ing materials from both sides of the printing platebefore loading it into the Prosetter 52/74/102. Thelaser beam could ignite the material and cause a firein the Prosetter 52/74/102.

4. Place the printing plate centrically ( 50 mm) on theinsertion table with the emulsion side facing up.

5. Push the plate as far as it can go into the device. A sig-nal sounds when the printing plate is in the correctposition.

6. In the Prosetter 52/74/102 user interface click the"Load Material" button.This step is only required when you wish to load theprinting plate without a request from the RIP.

When the RIP has sent a request, the printing plate isloaded automatically

The printing plate is detected by a sensor and cen-

tered on the insertion table. A gripper then takes upthe printing plate and loads it automatically into theexposure mold.

Deleting a printing plate request from the RIP

You can delete a printing plate request from the RIP,e.g. in order to process a very urgent job immediately:

1. Click the "Device" button in the Prosetter 52/74/102GUI.

2. Select "Main view" in the vertical menu bar.

3. Click the "Trashcan" button in the "Material" table.The current printing plate request will be deleted.

Unloading the printing plate

For discharging the printing plates onto the insertiontable of the Prosetter 52/74/102 you can choosebetween two modes of operation:

0 The printing plate is ejected at the insertion tableimmediately after exposure.

You should only select this mode if you are surethat the printing plate is removed from the inser-tion table for further processing immediately

after it has been ejected to protect it from contin-ued exposure by the ambient light.

0 The printing plate remains in the unit after expo-sure and is ejected at the insertion table onrequest.

You should select this mode if a light-sensitiveprinting plate is processed or if you cannot ensurethat the printing plate is removed from the inser-

tion table for further processing immediatelyafter it has been ejected.

The mode of operation is set at the workstation viathe Prosetter 52/74/102 user interface, seesection Setting the mode of operation for printingplate discharge, page 38.

Setting the mode of operation for printing plate discharge

The mode of operation for printing plate discharge isset in the Prosetter 52/74/102 user interface:



3. Select the "Material" tab.

Creation and Measuring of New Material

You must set up the device and do a test run in theorder described below for every new plate type you

want to use.The data of a similar type of plate can be used if onlythe dimensions of the new printing plate are differ-ent.

Setting the Base Intensity Test Mode

Note: The Prosetter 52/74/102 has an autofocus func-tion for all plate thicknesses. For that reason, the userdoes not have to do the focus test.

This test is performed by the service personnel only:

0 during the installation of the device and

0 after spare parts are built into the optical system.

There are three intensity tests:0 A base intensity test that covers the entire range

from 10000 to 1000000 for all plates. The teststarts at 10000 and increases 20% each time on theprevious value.

0 A base intensity test that covers the lower rangefrom 10000 to 100000 for bromide plates. The teststarts at 10000 and increases 10% each time on the

previous value.

0 A base intensity test that covers the upper rangefrom 80000 to 1000000 for polymer plates. Thetest starts at 80000 and increases 10% each timeon the previous value.

The test is selected in the user interface of the Proset-ter 52/74/102:

3. Select the "Material" tab.

4. Click either "Bottom range", "Top range" or "Wholerange" in the "Basic intensity test mode".

Material Setup

1. Select "Input" in the vertical menu bar. Material Wiz-ard (1) displays.

2. Click "Edit". Material Wizard (2) displays.

3. Click "New". A row for new material is added to thetable.

4. Click anywhere in the new row. The "Next" button isenabled.

5. Click "Next". Material Wizard (3) displays.

6. Enter a material name and define the printing plate'swidth, length, depth and polarity.

7. Click "Apply".

8. Click "Next". The new material is added to the mate-rial list and Material Wizard (4) displays.

9. Choose the new material from the list as displayed bythe Meta Dimension Engine Manager and start a baseintensity test job for a resolution of 1000 pixels/cm.

Attention:Each material has its own test job. Thesetest jobs are matched to the plate material and pro-duce the correct result for the intensity test only inconjunction with this material.

The device loads the printing plate, carrying out the

exposure of the test job. After exposure, the printingplate is conveyed back to the insertion table of theProsetter 52/74/102.

11. Develop the printing plate.

12. Place the developed printing plate under standardlighting and examine it, looking at it as straight aspossible from above.The test strip was imaged with the correct light value

if field 1 and field 2 gray scales in the test strip are thesame in the black-and-white rectangle and if no trian-gles can be seen in field 1.

13. Select the test job just done and add the result (foundat the far left beside the test strip) to all the resolu-tions in Material Wizard (4).

14. Click "Apply" and then "Close". The values entered arenow downloaded to the Prosetter 52/74/102.

Note: If the results of the base intensity test are notvery clear, a fine intensity test can be repeated usingthe same method.

Importing and Activating an Imaging Gradation

Each material has a special calibration group thatcorrects imaging so that there are graduations in allthe density ranges on the plate. These calibrationgroups take into account the special properties of theplate material and of the screening parameters.

1. Start the Calibration Manager (refer to the "Calibra-tion Manager - User's Guide").

2. Import the calibration group (cgr file) of the relevantmaterial. The CGR files are located on the ProsetterCD in the "Calibrationmanager" folder. Please contact

your Heidelberg agency for changes or new groupsthat are necessary, for example, for new materials orscreen systems.

3. You can find the calibration data sets in "Lineariza-tion".

You must add the material names you used in the

material setup to each calibration data set.Additions are only possible if the device and image-setter name is "Prosetter".

Note: The names of the calibration data sets are madeup of: plate manufacturer, screen frequency, resolu-tion and screen system, if any.

Exposure for Process Calibration

1. In the Meta Dimension Printmanager, create an Out-put Plan where linearization is enabled and the cali-bration group selected (refer to "Meta Dimension -User's Guide").

2. Create a virtual printer with this Output Plan.

3. Image a test page with a gray scale.

Removing the printing plate manually in the event of an error

When an error is detected, the printing plate caneither be positioned in the exposure mold or the grip-per cannot return the printing plate to the insertiontable.

In these cases the printing plate must be removedfrom the unit by hand.

If a printing plate is not conveyed back onto the inser-tion table as a result of a malfunction or if somethinghas slipped into the exposure mold through theinsertion slot, the printing plate or the part that hasslipped in must be removed from the exposure moldby hand.

4 Service and Maintenance

General

The unit does not contain any parts within the hous-ing which require servicing by the user.

Warning: Unauthorized opening or improper repairscan lead to considerable danger for the user.

Service work may only be performed by authorizedpersonnel specialized in this field.The relevant accident prevention regulations must beobserved at all times.

Failure to observe the safety regulations may result inthe loss of accident insurance!

Cleaning the Device

Warning: If cleaning the device involves the use of liq-uids, the device must be disconnected from the power

supply beforehand by pulling out the power connec-tor at the service line.

The surfaces of the unit can be cleaned using a drycloth.If the device is very dirty, it can be cleaned with adamp cloth which has been dipped in dish-washingliquid and well wrung.Ensure that no fluids enter the interior of the deviceand keep moisture away from the connections on therear of the device.Do not use any abrasive cleaning agents or solvents.

Cleaning the insertion table

The insertion table must be cleaned as required.

To do so, use a sponge and a glass cleaning agent orisopropanol.

Warning: Isopropanol is flammable, therefore:

0 Do not smoke during cleaning.

0 Avoid electrostatic discharges.

0 Only use isopropanol drop by drop to eliminatethe risk of deflagration.

Moisten the sponge with the cleaning agent andclean the surface of the insertion table applying a lit-tle bit of pressure.

Cleaning the exposure mold

Clean the exposure mold as required or at least everyfour weeks. Use a vacuum cleaner with plastic nozzlefor this purpose.The plastic nozzle is necessary so that the sensitivesurface of the exposure mold is not damaged.

9. Fix the fine filter frame by means of the lever locks.

10. Refit the material panel. The velcro fastenings mustbe closed with the utmost care so that the exposuremold is light and dust-proof again.
