Sports Medicine Program
• RMH has:– award winning Wellness Center– a robust PT/OT Therapy program – state of the art imaging equipment
such as MRI
• Goal: Collaborate with JMU to support its athletes
College of Business/ISAT Collaboration with RMH
• RMH currently reviewing and modifying/enhancing operating processes
• Immediate and ongoing need related to information systems
• College of Business (CoB) and Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) faculty have expertise (operations management, six sigma, lean manufacturing, etc)
Language Learning Training
• Need: provide assistance to those with English as a second language
• JMU’s interest: working with RMH to provide workshops on using Spanish in the medical field for RMH employees
• Goal: programs for individuals who have found language to be a impediment to receiving adequate medical care
Clinical Exercise Collaboration
• MD collaboration is needed for collecting muscle biopsies for Human Performance Laboratory at JMU
• Clinician coverage for the lab is also needed
• Possibility of a formal internship program with RMH for JMU’s Clinical Exercise Physiology Masters Students
Clinical Research & Magnet Status
• JMU would be interested in helping RMH develop clinical research to achieve Magnet Status, a recognition from ANA of excellence
Student Internships & Field Work• Incorporate student field
experiences (in-patient and out-patient) at RMH into JMU’s dietetics curricula
• JMU students could rotate through patient and non-patient foodservices at RMH
• Begin a journal club between RMH Dietetic Staff, JMU faculty, and students resulting in earned CEUs for professionals and student exposure to scholarly research and dialogue
• Student involvement with the Speakers Bureau and Community Outreach
Joint Research
• Develop prioritized research agenda to study and develop strategies that combat major nutrition-related healthcare issues
• Seek public and private grant funding
• Involve student researchers
• Publish and present ongoing findings
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
• JMU to develop a non-profit CSA on RMH campus
• CSA will operate throughout the year, providing local and organic produce for purchase by employees of RMH, JMU, and Harrisonburg/ Rockingham County residents
• Consistent with RMH's commitment to a healthy community
• Will provide LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) points for innovation
Audiology Externships in RMH Newborn Nursery
• JMU Doctoral students in the Audiology program have an externship experience in the RMH Newborn Nursery
• Students perform the VA State-mandated newborn hearing screenings
• Students provided an Early Identification and Intervention of hearing loss for the nursing staff at RMH
Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) Design or Feasibility Project for RMH
• Review RFID technological space and specific application areas that will impact/improve RMH operations in the short and long-term
• Examples:– a) use of RFID technology to track OR
patients– b) display and communicate patient status
automatically – c) use data events to drive business
processes – d) use RFID to track/trace hospital
personnel, test specimen, and other assets – e) use RFID to prevent medical errors – f) review use of RFID in Alzheimer patient
care
Health Sciences & Human Services Research Collaborative
• Match practicing professionals with faculty and/or students who are interested in doing research with clinical populations
• The professionals benefit from JMU students’ assistance with research and the students benefit by gaining the professionals’ opinions and access to clinical populations
Shared use of Imaging Technology
• JMU’s potential use of RMH’s imaging technology/equipment for research purposes
Jointly Appointed Child Psychiatrist
• A child psychiatrist serving both RMH and JMU
Geriatric Assessment Pilot• Received VDA grant for project
planning and pilot• Evidence-based
multidisciplinary evaluation described
• Multidisciplinary evaluation team representing RMH and JMU formed
• Developed referral relationships with providers at primary care practices
• Seven patients evaluated with very favorable patient and clinician evaluations
Dedicated Education Unit
• One nursing unit at RMH would serve as a dedicated unit for JMU nursing students and instructors to practice and learn
• RMH would assign preceptors to students to help them learn and develop their nursing skills
• RMH leadership and JMU faculty would collaborate on this unit to create training and staffing models that serve both institutions
Green Roof
• RMH wants to incorporate a green roof into its new hospital
• JMU providing assistance with research to help RMH without added construction expense
Medical Staff Leadership Training• RMH has a need to
engage medical staff leaders in a formal medical staff leadership training program
• Possible collaboration opportunity for JMU's Healthcare Leadership Institute
Community Health Interpreter Service
• Explore options for ongoing language assistance resourcing for the community– telephonic interpretation – scheduled hours
Training for RMH and JMU’s Mental Health Clinicians
• The Suicide Prevention Resource Center has recently created a one-day training specifically for mental health clinicians on "Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk" (AMSR)
• The goal is to increase suicide prevention preparedness among our community's primary "Go to" helpers
RMH Cancer Center
• Collaborative research through the RMH Cancer Center
Health Literacy Game
• Used by RMH and surrounding community
• Expand availability and access of health literacy game to educate community health workers and others
Harrisonburg Community Health Center
• RMH and JMU, in collaboration with the Healthy Community Council, supporting the development of a Federally Qualified Community Health Center (FQHC) in Harrisonburg/Rockingham County
• Mission: provide affordable and accessible primary care for all persons regardless of their ability to pay
Learning Tour of RMH Hardware
• Tour of the RMH facilities for interested Computer Information Systems (CIS) faculty to learn more about the computer hardware being used
Integrative Health
• Collaborate in developing integrative health education and practice
JMU Interns Working with RMH
• Establish internships in appropriate JMU departments to work with RMH personnel on specific "real world" challenges
• Examples – assisting with change
management– online course development– delivery
Music and Medicine
• Collaboration could range from exploring healing with music to providing opportunities for JMU music groups to perform
Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) Center
• Bring together the expertise of JMU and RMH to create a SIM Center
Pharmacy Residents
• Explore use of pharmacy residents to teach Pharmacy courses at JMU
Cardiac Diagnostics Using Sophisticated Fluid Mechanics
Techniques• An analytical tool was developed
to characterize cardiac flow
• The tools measure various flow parameters including the propulsive efficiency of the mitral inflow as a means of characterizing cardiac health, cardiac disease stages, and heart failure
Chronic Illness Strategies Clinic• The purpose of the Chronic Illness
Strategies Clinic:– empower people with chronic
illnesses to manage their disease – prevent acute exacerbations– delay further decline– maximize quality of life
• Designed as an adjunct to primary care services
• Clients will continue care with their primary care provider at the clinic
• Innovative, evidence based multi-disciplinary strategies not feasible in primary care settings today
Touchscreen Computer Kiosks• Design and pilot a computer touchscreen
kiosk offering written and verbal health information in English, Spanish and Russian for persons with low language and low health literacy
• Information on three healthcare learning needs:
– 1) heart disease– 2) depression– 3) TBA (to be selected based on needs of
participants at the site)• Data will be collected on
– 1) ability of such technology to improve knowledge of the intended users on the topics offered
– 2) acceptability of touchscreen computer kiosk as a means to deliver health information to persons with low language and health literacy
Healthy Families
• Explore opportunities to combine resources that will facilitate achievement of broad Health Families goals.
IRBs - WIN!
• JMU and RMH Institutional Review Boards include representation from both institutions
• Suggested at January 2007 celebration
• Implemented successfully in 2007
• Facilitates collaborative research
• Meets federal guidelines for IRBs for external representation
