PREFACE

BACKGROUND

As one of the developing countries, Indonesia should have a good quality of human resources and also adequate intellectual ability to offset the rapid industrial development compare with other developing and developed countries. The high level of competition in the business world is a challenge that must be faced by all parties. Meanwhile, on the one hand there is still a gap between our educational world, especially from the universities, with the real world of work. The fact that we see today are the universities graduate-student only ready to train, not ready to use. The main cause is that the universities fact of having fallen behind the development of higher education and information technology in the outside world.

In order to face that kind of problems, the internship program in a company or institution which is related with the student’s major is compulsory by the universities. By doing the internship program, students expected to have a deep understanding about the real condition of working environment. Beside that, students will have a good experiences and wider knowledge that never been studied at college.

In the industrial world, Industrial Engineering has always had a role in any system there. Many of the skills have been applied to broad areas. The concern of industrial engineering is with the design, improvement and installation of integrated system of people, materials, information, equipment, energy, capital and managerial techniques to create a system that will improve efficiency and effectiveness. The knowledge used in industrial engineering stems from sciences, such as math and physics, to social sciences. It also uses the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design in order to get the optimal solution. As one of the majors in Bandung Institute of Technology, industrial engineering is based on manufacturing with managerial support along with other elements that support the industrial process.

In college, we mainly focus on theoretical knowledge. However these knowledge need to be implemented to perfect our skills along with good attitude and communication. One way of fulfilling this need is by internship. This internship program has many benefits for students in understanding the social culture environment of the work place and to understand the work of an industrial engineer.

The common undergraduate student of industrial engineering ITB is expected to see a system in a holistic view, and to find and solve problems that is encountered in order to make a system work effective and efficiently. There are many positions that are suitable, such as Supply Chain, Logistic

TOPICS

To introduce our activities during the internship program, it is important for us to make details about our ideas in order to make sure that our activities will be suitable with the company’s program. The following explanation will help company to determine topics that will be fitted for Industrial Engineering applicants.

We have already found out some job categories in PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk. that may have related materials with the tools of Industrial Engineering. The following job categories may be suitable for us:1. Supply Chain, Logistic Management, and transportation2. Operation and Production3. Finance and Economics4. Health and Safety Environment5. Human Resource & Research and Development

Materials which we are suggested for the topics of internship are those which we have already studied until the 6th semester. The topics have included tools that can be used for solving problems in this company. These are topics that we would recommend:

1. Supply Chain, Logistic Management, and TransportationTopic about Supply and Transportation management will be related to a set of approaches utilized to efficiently integrate suppliers, manufacturers, warehouses, and stores, so that merchandise is produced and distributed at the right quantities, to the right location, and at the right time, in order to minimize costs while satisfying service levels requirements. This topic can be divided into three subtopics, such as:a. Supply

Vendor management, Inbound Logistics, Raw Materialsb. Operations

Production Scheduling, MRP, In-process Inventory Control, Capacity Planningc. Distributions

Forecasting, Customer Service, Finished Goods Inventory Control, Outbound Logistics.

2. Operation and ProductionOperation and production will connect activities in three main functional areas, which are marketing, finance, and production. These activities aim to operate the industry efficiently. This topic will be related to major economic problems of production management such as inventory, production scheduling and control, maintenance, plant layout and structure, quality control, and material handling.

Operation and production may consist activities such like forecasting demand that the company should fulfill, scheduling and controlling company’s production system, including materials and

human resources. Others activities are managing inventory, estimating cost, and controlling quality.

With this topic, student can learn about problems in designing and operating products, with the approach of Just in Time System, Theory of Constraint, or Load Oriented Manufacturing System. In this topic, we can create production plan, production schedule, and distribution.

We can study following cases for detail: Enterprise Resource Lean manufacturing Push and Pull system System scheduling Just In Time Manufacturing System Theory of Constraints Supply Chain Management Strategic Networking System

These topics below also have relation to operation and production topic :

Quality ControlProvide standard quality of products using statistical tools. Statistical quality control constitutes a set of techniques based on the theories of probability and statistical sampling for monitoring process variation and for determining whether manufactured lots meet desired quality levels. It would be used to satisfy modern consumers that are more educated and more discriminating than ever before in products or services they have received.

Operations ResearchOperations Research has a cornerstone that is mathematical modeling. Though the solution of the mathematical model provides a basis for making a decision, intangible (unquantifiable) factors (such as human behavior) must be accounted for before a final decision can be reached. The ideas advanced in Operations Research were adapted to improve efficiency and productivity. There are several fields of study that use the theories of Operations Research as a decision-making tool. Among those fields are:1. Transportation problem2. Inventory problem3. Queuing problem4. Traveling Salesman Problem5. Assignment Problem6. Project network management
