I. INTRODUCTION

About APPEN

The Asia Pacific Pharmacy Education Network (APPEN) is a member-driven society of schools of

pharmacy within the Asia Pacific region. The network was founded to enhance education and

research in pharmacy and pharmaceuticals by establishing mutual and beneficial

interrelationship among the society members. The member of the network stretches in a number

of countries such as Indonesia (Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Institut Teknologi

Bandung), Malaysia (Management & Science University, Universiti Sains Malaysia), Thailand

(Chulalongkorn University and Burapha University), Philippine (University of the Philippines,

University of Santo Tomas, University of the Immaculate Conception) and Japan (Josai University

and Josai International University). In 2019, the network aims to expand its collaboration by

inviting Mahidol University Thailand and Universiti Brunei Darussalam into the team.

Overview of the International Joint Symposium

The 2019 international joint symposium is one of the initiatives of the network to achieve its

objective. The current event is joining two international conferences which ‘marks the second

joint symposium held under the network initiatives. The first joint symposium was held in Japan

and organized by Josai University and Josai International University in 2018. The current

international joint symposium is conducted in Surabaya Indonesia and organized by Faculty of

Pharmacy Universitas Airlangga in colaboration with Halal Center of Universitas Airlangga.

Background

The changing landscape of healthcare and pharmacy, the advancement of technology and

societal needs have influenced the way pharmacy is taught and practiced. It is therefore not

surprising that innovation in teaching pharmacy, improving students’ capabilities and managing

educational institution e.g. a faculty or a school of pharmacy increasingly becomes important

subject of discussion among pharmacy education stakeholders. The attempts to enhance the

quality of education by schools of pharmacy is not only limited at the phase at which students

learn in schools, but it spans to which students work or practice as professional. Beyond this

continuum, schools of pharmacy also shoulder burden as an agent of change in terms of

research excellence and social contribution. Therefore, finding the most effective and

comprehensive approach is the holy grail in pharmacy education.

At the same time, development of halal pharmaceuticals and cosmetics system in tandem with

growing awareness towards halal concept cannot be disregarded. The requirement of halal

pharmaceuticals and cosmetics is underlined in the policy documents in a number of countries

reflecting the potential and benefits of halal system. Accordingly, halal concept is indeed

recognized and increasingly accepted as one of the standards in pharmacy and healthcare

industries. The implementation of halal, however, is not without

3

problems. Highlighting the issues and seeking the win-win solutions are therefore becoming a

necessity for halal industries to adapt with the current system.

Continuing the success of previous symposium, the 2019 International Joint Symposium strives

towards enhancement of pharmacy education and recognition of halal pharmaceuticals and

cosmetics. The current symposium offers opportunity for synergy among the network institutions

and dissemination of best practice in pharmacy education and halal system recognition. The

word “synergy” reflects the essence of joining forces and learning from others experience. It also

highlights situation in which no party solves all, no size fits all and neither I nor you except us. The

network which stretches across Asia Pacific is truly a great opportunity for establishing and

sustaining such synergy.

Activities

The event will involve a series of plenary session, parallel panels, poster presentation and other

interactive events. We are inviting a number of internationally acknowledged experts to be

keynote speakers in the plenary session. Parallel planes are enacted as a venue for discussion

regarding the issues in pharmacy education and halal pharmaceutical and cosmetics.

Presenters in this panel sessions are selected from the network representatives. Poster session

offers opportunity for sharing knowledge and experiences as well as great moment for

networking. Additionally, a number of “interactive” events in form of debates, mini workshops,

forum discussions and tutorials are offered during the symposium.

IV. VENUES AND DATES

Date : 8 – 9 October 2019

Venue : Faculty of Pharmacy Airlangga University Campus C, Surabaya Indonesia

Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia and is famous as the “city of green and flowery

parks” which decorates the city landscape within the past ten years. Surabaya recently won the

2018 Guangzhou International Award for urban innovation in the online popular city category

beating a number of other popular cities across the globe. Surabaya is also known as the hub of

commerce for the eastern part of Indonesia while striving to maintain the values of multiple

ethnicities and culture of its citizen. This leaves a fascinating experience of a mixed modern and

traditional lifestyle between the labyrinth of city lanes and corners.

The symposium will be held at the new 10 levels building of the Faculty of Pharmacy Airlangga

University. The venue amplifies the energy and enthusiasm of the APPEN network and capitalizes

potential benefits regarding the objectives of the symposium. The faculty is only 20 minutes from

Gubeng Surabaya Station, 1 hour from Surabaya International Airport and accessible from any

destinations.

The plenary talks are given in the pharmacy hall which provides 500 seats at most. Eight other

rooms each of which can provide 50 seats are reserved for parallel sessions. A sufficient space

for poster and demo presentations nearby the pharmacy hall are also reserved for the

symposium.

9

V. TARGET AUDIENCES

The symposium will attract educators, researchers and leaders from domestic and international.

As the symposium focuses on the depth of discussion and collaborative action among the

network, quantity of participants may not be the main target. Quality, straight initiative and

continuance of the expected results are indeed the main issue. Therefore, it is expected that up

to 300 participants will attend the symposium.
