“The case of luxury design”
"Home is where the heart is, and though I
travel extensively writing about hotels and
food, it is where I love to return to and sit in
the garden with a coffee, occasional glass
of wine and my nine rescued dogs. Another
nest at home is my office where the world
comes to me or I reach out through the
ether to embrace it in a comfortable and
hassle-free environment. No boarding

The epitome of Italian culture and a household name recognised across the globe for its quality, the Poltrona Frau designs are intimate and timeless. Together with the personality of each individual piece, these are the fruits of the craftsman’s workmanship in the most modern forms.
Designed by Segzin Aksu and Silvia Suardi, this is a sofa with measured style, perfectly calculated, to provide the right level of comfort. The surfaces of the armrests and backrest are upholstered in Saddle leather, sewn on directly with skilful clean cut trim to the internal leather upholstering. The overall effect is a pleasant material contrast.
18
Hand-cut, hand-shaped leather closely moulds the lines and structure of the seat, including the upper part of the backrest, to bring out its true beauty. The high, slim armrest also presents intricate, careful workmanship and has a leather cover that folds down on the inside and is attached to the frame with elegant steel rivets.
Grantorino
NEW!
A contemporary key to give just the right feel to every ambience. The seat and backrest structure are created from solid seasoned beech wood with polyurethane foam padding, upholstered in Pelle Frau leather.
Italian mastery in leather
Like a big, enveloping, and highly treasured cape. Comfortable and tactile, Mantò sofa speaks the language of haute couture. The natural elegance of the piece stems from the masterful tailoring that goes into the handling of all materials.
A protective refuge where you can stretch out and relax. The cushions, with their simple and linear shape, are arranged along the perimeter. In keeping with the sofa design, the diamond tufting features a wide and elegant line. The entire exposed surface of the seat is decorated with skillful artisan stitching.
19
Naidei
The sofa is upholstered in Pelle Frau leather. The steel profile with a gunmetal grey finish decorates the joint between armrest and backrest to the back. Sofa is available in 3 sizes.
An expansive, refined and welcoming vision of the living room. The system allows the creation of malleable and ultra-comfortable furnishing compositions. The depth of the seat is made ever-more comfortable with the generous allowance of cushions.
Sofa by day, bed by night. It is elegant, practical and welcoming. Its essential design makes it ideal for the different areas of the home. A simple-to-use mechanism concealed within the structure means that it only takes a few seconds to transform Naidei.
20
Bretagne
A collection of sofas designed in the mark of an enveloping, casual elegance. The large backrest and armrest cushions, hooked to the structure, offer a mobility that facilitates achieving the most comfortable position possible.
Jean-Marie Massaud revisits the enveloping elegance of the John-John, amplifies it and designs the Antohn, a sofa that is both imposing and light in terms of its structure. In fact, it almost appears to hover in the air thanks to its thin T-shaped titanium coloured feet which, located in the central section of the structure, are completely invisible.
Antohn

John John
Created with the utmost attention to detail, hand-crafted diamond shaped tufting covers the backrest. The back is finished with a beautiful row of leather tacks.
A piece of furniture which, with its clean lines and use of tubular steel, evokes 1950’s design and the work of Le Corbusier, but with its own originality. In the Poltrona Frau world, the T 904 can be combined, with great versatility and harmony, with classical or more contemporary pieces alike.
22
The zest for perfection can be seen in the capitonné effect workmanship and in the series of tacks that give a finishing touch to the leather.

Refined discretion, the sectional sofa elements will allow one to create numerous compositions, with or without armrests. The backrest cushions, entirely upholstered in Pelle Frau leather with micro-holes at the rear, can be individually positioned as desired.
23Italian mastery in leather
Dynamic with its wide-ranging lines, Kennedee is a modular sofa with an infinite number of combinations. The light and modern quilting of the back and cushions reveals Poltrona Frau’s age-old artisanal skills.
One of the best seller from the brand. The gracefulness and comfort are the main characteristics of Arcadia sofa and armchair.
24
Essential, clear-cut design with a note of character seen in the unique stitching and exclusive piping running in a continuous line gives the possibility of personal colour matches. A sofa system designed to satisfy contemporary living spaces and desires.
Italian mastery in leather 25
The springiness of the seat is obtained from elastic belts, whilst the padding is in differentiated-density polyurethane foam and polyester wadding.
Simple with pleasantly rounded lines. Enjoy the pleasure of giving in to the comfort of an enveloping and velvety soft seat. The ideal place to sit and chat, thanks to its perfectly balanced proportions. The enveloping seat offers maximum comfort. Understated, elegant and perfectly calibrated in terms of its volumes, the Bebop is completely upholstered in Pelle Frau® leather.
Mamy Blue
Designed by Roberto Lazzeroni, it is for relaxation and reading or thinking and listening to music. Its round and agile forms recall the dynamic and sophisticated designs of Carlo Mollino. A combination further
exalted by the elegant visible stitching.
DU 55
A new example of traditional craftsmanship applied to modern design. The shell is made from curved multi-ply beech wood, while the feet are made from fine steam-curved solid oak with an aged walnut finish. The headrest cushion is height-adjustable.
Letizia
Encapsulating the visual and formal style of the 1950’s, “Letizia” is the product of a genuinely organicistic approach adopted by the designer. Gastone Rinaldi experiments with new formal solutions, works on full, empty spaces and on sensual, soft lines.
The back structure is in moulded polyurethane foam, seasoned beech-wood and double-cone steel springs that are individually tied and attached to jute webbing. The base is in wengé-stained ash wood.

The rich upholstery of Juliet armchair re-invents the classic capitonné in a contemporary version.
27
NEW!
It is enriched by original crimp stitching for interiors in recollection of the embroidery and ruffling of women’s sleeves and bodies, creating a faceted pattern that ripples the surfaces.
Poltrona Frau asked 12 of the most talented and best known designers in the world to design an armchair to symbolise the centenary, projecting it into the future.
British designer Benjamin Hubert, the enfant prodige of international design has created Juliet. The armchair that symbol-ises Poltrona Frau’s one hundred year anniversary is the winning design of the centenary design contest.
Centenary Design Contest
This important armchair is majestic, like a king. It is an invitation to meditate and relax in your study or living room. One distinctive feature is the large headrest that opens out like a classic wing chair. Soft and welcoming, it follows the elegant play of folds that characterises the inner part of the backrest.
Archibald King1
An armchair with a personality that stands out from the crowd. Kennedee is one of the best sellers from the brand.
Kennedee4
The enveloping design is exalted by the free play of folds that the leather creates across all of the internal part of the backrest, making it pleasantly undulating. The precious contrasting stitching along the seams and on the external surfaces of the upholstery creates a refined elegance.
Archibald A2
A re-interpretation of the classic director’s chair. A clear-cut, linear cross-over frame forms an X which supports the seat, the pouf and the small table.
Aster X5
Neat, essential, and comfortable which has a soft leather shell, comfortable and protective, enhanced by visible top stitching that runs along the entire edge, creating an elegant decorative effect. The swivel version is perfect for a study area, while the fixed model is ideal for a dining table.
Ginger3
The pure elegance of an eclectic, yet transversally practical small armchair. The Brooklyn armchair is made up of structural elements whose purity and linearity represent elements of great aesthetic value.

Vanity Fair
1919 takes its cue from model 128, which made its debut in Renzo Frau’s 1919 catalogue. The opulent features of rococo armchairs are reproduced with the addition of a special extension to serve as footrest and a small book stand supported by an arm anchored to the side.
Vanity Fair is a replica of the celebrated 904 model that was part of Poltrona Frau's catalogue in 1903 and became an archetype after which modern armchairs have been patterned ever since. It is known the world over for its typical rounded shape and the rows of leather-covered nails that add the finishing touch to the seatback and arms.

The zest for perfection can be seen in the capitonné effect workmanship and in the series of tacks that give a finishing touch to the leather. The vegetable horsehair of the padding in the backrest and armrests is hand-modelled. The springs are eight-way springs, tied by hand and supported on jute webbing.
Chester One1
Important, majestic, fit for royalty. A distinguished large headrest takes up on the elegant folds of the backrest featured throughout the collection. Thus the pleasantly undulating leather is embellished along the edges and external surfaces of the upholstery with contrast stitching, giving it a refined, elegant appeal.
Archibald4
An ultra-contemporary interpretation of the classic bergère, Regina II is a swivel armchair. The capitonné effect workmanship enlivens the surface, creating a delicate play of spaces and solids. Regina II is available with an elegant pouf.
Regina II2
A form of modern classicism. The seat has been designed to welcome the body in a flexible and soft embrace. The insertion of thin elastic webbing creates a lightspring in the seat and also ensures that it does not deform. The shell, made from a single moulded piece of polyurethane foam, is self-supporting.
Jockey5
Softness and comfort are the main characteristics of this series of sofas and chairs. The frame is made of beech wood, the padding is made from polyurethane foam and resinate, and the cushions are made from polyurethane foam and feathers.
Arcadia3
Ample, deep, welcoming. Designed with a masterly equilibrium between the play of the needle and the leatherwork. It is constructed with the same craftsmanship and attention to detail that has always been a hallmark of Poltrona Frau. Refined diamond stitching forms a harmonious motif across the backrest while the pleated trim softens the armrests.

The original tapered triangular section gives the support greater dynamism. In this painstaking economy of elements, the inlay work on the wengé-stained ash veneered surface is particularly notable. Macro wooden tesserae combine to create a pattern of horizontal and vertical grains that is different each time.
Designed by Roberto Lazzeroni, Bolero is a minimalist and sleek addition to the living room. The surface, attached to the supports using a spacer, almost appears to float in space. Its faintly trapeze-like shape accentuates the visual
perception of a thickness reduced to the minimum.

H T Table
Designed by Claudio Silvestrin. HT table is a clean and incisive design. The longitudinal staves make for a naturally elegant look along the top surface.
Palio
Designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, Palio has a discreet and distinctive presence, it is a fulcrum of living and companionship. The top’s geometry is slightly irregular and features softened edges. The supports are in molded rigid polyurethane and are distinguished by their original lines of motion and an alternation of light and
shadow. The Palio dining table comes in rectangle or round.

Montera
Delicate hand crafted cross seams embellish the inside of the seat and back. The edges of the backrest are underlined by an aluminium profile with a Ruthenium finish, also echoed in the feet.
Design by Roberto Lazzeroni, it has light stitching that traces out a smile. Clean cuts that bring out the tactile quality of the hide and leather. On the back of the seat the visible stitching traces a delicate motif and hides the zipper which, like an impeccable tailor-made suit, is used to close the cover.
Fitzgerald
Innate class, international style. A new piece in the sophisticated world of Kennedee created by Jean-Marie Massaud for Poltrona Frau. A seat of extreme formal simplicity, which exudes elegance through every detail. The backrest is enriched with a double vertical
seam and branded with the Poltrona Frau logo.
NEW!
A refined and simple easy chair. Neat, essential, and comfortable. A soft leather shell, comfortable and protective, enhanced by visible topstitching that runs along the edge, creating an elegant decorative effect.
Sinuous and compact design. Ginger Ale is the most informal and simplified variant of the Ginger, ideal as dining room chair. The smooth pattern design for the shell-like body is visually integrated with the four conical metal supports.
Ginger Ale Beatrice1
Ginger4The harmonious motif of the final part of the back support of Samo is achieved through the use of the classical crinkle coating technique. A play of inlays is made between leather and wood, thanks to the skilled joinery between the seat and the seasoned birch frame.
Samo5
A variation of Liz, with the same rigour and simplicity of form. In this version the line of the arm rest is clear-cut and square, forming part of the body of the seat. The frame is in beech-wood, as are the feet, which come in stained walnut, stained cherry, natural, bleached, untreated or with a special wengè finishing.
Liz B2Sensations of poise and harmony, free from over dominating elements. The alternation between leather and wood creates measured graphic effects, especially behind the backrest, where a curved wooden panel is grafted elegantly into the rear legs.

A beautiful blend of wood and leather. The top rises up at the center of a large bay in which everyday items can be conveniently stored. It is upholstered in Saddle hide and embellished by an elegant edging.

Natural materials like wood and leather with fine handcrafted decorations. A discreet and functional piece of furniture designed for the living room as either a coffee or tea table. There is vertical hand stitching along every support, creating an understated decorative design that underlines the linearity of the design.
An innovative idea for a model that reminds us of perfect circular symmetry. A circular table with two tops, supported by four legs running along the external edge of the top. Both tops are made from multilayer wood, and lightly padded with foam.

Flair
Decorative and theatrical, Flair will embellish any ambience, from the most modern to the most traditional, blending the past and present, new and old.
Designed by Jean-Marie Massaud, Jack has all the authority and character of a product that defines an environment. Paola Navone works with Poltrona Frau for the first time. Her open and eclectic approach results in an unexpected vision of the bed, where the concept of warmth and rest can be freely interpreted by everyone. A bed that can become many beds with one simple action. Fulcrum of the Lelit project is the headboard - high, padded, almost like a shield which nestles and protects.

CELEBRAT ING A HUNDRED YEARS OF EXCE L L ENCE
Poltrona Frau of the world centre of luxury furnishings, standard-bearer of “Made in Italy” taste and quality.
Poltrona Frau is an ambassador of Italy and Italians around the world, and with the aforementioned values in mind we are now drawing up the blueprint for our next hundred years.
Poltrona Frau is one of the legends that defines my daily life, a brand that has always suggested true excellence, quality and tradition. It typifies a uniquely Italian, enlightened entrepreneurship that, with great foresight, has ventured beyond territorial boundaries to become a world-class brand.
The company pioneered an innovative strategy with the creation of the Poltrona Frau Group and following the acquisition of Cassina and Cappellini, the first formal experiment in an otherwise divided sector, has redefined the realm of high-style home furnishings both in Italy and abroad, joining forces but at the same time respecting the identify of each single brand.
In this sense, I like to envision our first hundred years as a remarkable intellectual, creative, and productive legacy, the springboard from which the company has leapt into the future and learned to respond increasingly well to the needs of a broader, more international and culturally diverse public.
If it is thanks to Renzo Frau that this story all started in 1912, then it is certain that it is to Franco Moschini, modern patron who combined an unusual capacity of vision with his sensibility and culture, that we owe the “devolution” of the 1960s. Introducing Baker’s long tradition ofproducing luxurious heirloom quality furniture
While design and materials create a sense for the potential beauty of furniture, hand craftsmanship in all of its sundry forms determines the outcome.
Once thought to be a form of sculpture, hand carving has long been coveted for its sensuous tactile qualities. Baker Upholstery is reminiscent of couture level fashion - with its premium fabrics, hand cut, basted and re-basted, ultimately flow matched to each silhouette.
Together with a remarkable assortment of coils and configurations specific to each design, the result is best of class in this or any other era.
At the beginning, a craftsman named Siebe Baker worked with his hands. Later, the success of his sturdy furniture allowed his son, Hollis Baker, to study at university, travel the Old World, and hone the eye of a collector. Today these two thoughts, the eye and the hand, remain the cornerstone of Baker Furniture.
Good design lies at the heart of fine furniture. For Baker, that means a great collection assembled literally one item at a time.

Good design lies at the heart of ne furniture
Good design lies at the heart of fine furniture. Baker builds furniture from more periods, styles, and international influences than any other furniture maker. Whether it's a best-of-kind reproduction or an original from a celebrated designer, each item contributes to a sensibility that is uniquely Baker. The accent on product is through design, materials, craftsmanship, and its finish. For Baker, that means a great collection assembled literally one item at a time. For our customers, it's about the sense of integrity and the promise of things chosen well rather than often.
Thomas Pheasant develops the idea of a largely weltless modern silhouette with a prominently framed back. This version of the Max Sofa has a low tight back and a slightly more modern feeling. Converging slope arms meet the base through a deeply cut scallop detail revealing, but still neatly holding, the cushion.

Flared Arm Sofa
A modern tuxedo-style sofa with loose seat and loose back cushions. Generous and timeless, this sofa is accented with a combination of throw pillows and is also available as a sectional to create a custom look.
The Patricia series celebrate the feminine side of modernism-grand, glamorous, and shapely. Each chaise has a tightly upholstered slope back and a butter knife arm. The bolster is elegant, and the taper leg adds a sense of lightness. Once confined to the bedroom, the chaise is now a fully liberated form, free to work its magic on every room of the house.
Upholstered Daybed
A contemporized daybed with flaring arms and a bench seat over a reeded wood frame. Square tapered legs. A daybed of this type works in a large living room or possibly a small bedroom in replace of a conventional bed. When placed against a wall, throw pillows can be added to work as a sofa.
Curved Back Sofa
A contemporized crescent sofa with curved back with three loose cushions, a shaped bench seat and a slope arm. The arm actually holds the seat in a crisp, contemporary way. This sofa was designed to float in a rotunda.
Loose Back Sofa
Designed for everyday use, everyone likes the three-over-three cushion style, and almost everyone likes to nap on it now and then. The throw pillows offer an easy way to layer one neutral over another.

Paris
Designed for Thomas Pheasant’s home in D.C., this sofa offers modern luxury on a grand scale. A contemporized Chesterfield intended for a great room, it can work to divide a space or provide a visual platform for artwork.
Paris Chaise Lounge
A chaise of this nature is high-style occasional seating. Unusually long, this frame is often used in lieu of a sofa - whether floating or against a wall. Its modest height also makes it suitable as a dramatic window seat. Extensive nail head trim adds a graphic detail framing the silhouette.
Arc Bench
Architectural and sculptural, the Arc Bench provides a firm seat on which to perch. An easy addition to any room to offer more seating - end of the bed, in front of the fireplace or floating in a room. The firmly upholstered biscuit-tufted cushion set upon a modern metal arc keeps it light and transparent.

Athens Lounge
The klismos chair has been evolving for centuries. With the Athens Lounge Chair, Thomas Pheasant pushes that timeless form to the limits of craftsmanship. Never have its sweeping silhouette and lean frame been so exaggerated and so modern.
The wood frame of the Athens Chair sets off the fabric, and it makes for a great view from all angles. Custom cast, ribbed bronze collars and capitals give the Athens a certain volume to its voice.
Diana Vanity Chair
Thomas Pheasant conceived this chair as the ideal, high fashion complement to the Diana Dressing Table. The low slung arms go under the table, and the refinement of the legs is unprecedented.
The recessed, molded and mitered squares of the Bevel Chair create a coffered pattern inspired by the ceiling of the Washinton DC National Gallery rotunda. With every piece of molding meticulously hand fit to complete the arc, Thomas Pheasant and the Baker craftsmen have taken the idea of a barrel back chair to an entirely new level.
Max
The idea is developed from a largely weltless modern silhouette with a prominently framed back. The look of the cushions, depth, and pitch all convey comfort, and there is a slightly relaxed softness about it. Visually, the kidney pillows add a horizontal break.

Temple2Floating like a shimmering mirage, the Temple Cocktail Table rests atop a purely architectural frame of solid brass.
Scroll4This elegant cocktail table has a Greek Key motif meets China Scroll. Generous scale and useful drawers make this a great choice for family room or library.
The Tower Tier collection works as a diminutive cocktail table for small spaces. Whether it's for a setting for 2 or a group of 4, the genius of the Tower Tier table is the ease which it can be bunched together. In a nod to simplicity, the veneers are in mahogany and the columns are faceted in the Roman manner.
Classic refinement and perfect proportion come together in this gracious end table/small entry table. A beautiful walnut veneer tops rests on reeded tapered legs. The cuff on the stretcher is available highlighted in burnished gold leaf.

A piece of modern jewelry that just happens to be a table. Made by an atelier in Italy, on a street with neither a sign nor a name, requiring more than 300 brass parts, and assembled by hand, some things quietly honor the practice of the old world and the promise of the new.

The best thing about a set of Nesting Tables is that they are a set - more than one. At rest, their footprint is modest, and their look is artfully minimal. The addition of a ribbed bronze shoe adds an unexpected sense of craft that defines rather than dilutes what it means to be bespoke modern.

The Normandie is a reference to the most luxurious transatlantic ocean liner of the 1930s, which bridged French and American Art Deco in a surge of travel first prompted by Prohibition. Carmel Console
1 Nina Console2A quiet statement in soft tones of neutral greys. A lustrous lacquer exterior complements a softly honed stone top of the same hue. The interior is luxuriously finished in walnut providing a striking contrast to the subtle play of light and shadow on its exterior.
A 1950s form with stepped and canted corners, reworked for Thomas Pheasant's own home, the St. Honoré is really a celebration of great doors and the materials that make them so. A delicate Bronze molding offers a frame for select crotch mahogany presented vertically.
Simple elegance defines the Carmel Console. A modern console that has quiet style and ample storage. Framed in beautiful walnut with shagreen-stamped leather doors and drawer fronts. Felt-lined silverware drawers are included.
Nina makes quite an entrance. This is an example of how restraint doesn't work against luxury, but it does raise the stakes for design. It is shallow, open, and light. The graphics of the symmetric but intersect-ing shelves are the design.

Just over one year in development, the direction and focus of the designsarticulate Thomas Pheasant’s personal andprofessional evolution.
EVOLUTIONCLASSICAL
It is his mastery of understatement and unexpected detail that creates a captivating sensuality to the pieces, essentially blurring the lines between classic form and modern restraint of line. “I am motivated by the evolution of classical ideals,” said Pheasant. “While travel and museums continue to offer me a treasure trove of stunning examples to incite my designer gene, I am not interested in reproducing the past.”
“My approach to design has always been to strip away unnecessary decoration, to me there is great beauty in refined simplicity,” said Pheasant. “To design objects that are elegant, maintain value, are stimulating to the senses, and visually beautiful.
84
This goes against the trend today, but it is this exploration of new ways of expression, using simplicity, bold silhouettes and clean finishes that look forward, not back, that excites me.”
Pheasant remains steadfast in his wood selection, again choosing mahogany solids and finely executed veneers. “I wanted these new designs to blend with what I’ve done in the past, using the same materials in a different way. Undecorated classic look, refined and simplified to engage the senses, and creating balance between main characters and supporting players to broaden market appeal” said Pheasant.
Hardwood frames are hand-constructed with corners blocked, glued, screwed, and dowelled in Old World fashion, and true eight-way hand spring-to-base tying, positioning more springs to support pressure points so furniture maintains its beauty for years to come.

A vision of a well-lived life 107Barbara Barry Realized by Henredon
Through a discussion of Barbara Barry’s principles of good design - simplicity, proportion, and harmony - we discover how to apply
these principles to our rooms and to our lives.
Acclaimed interior designer Barbara Barry’s work has long been praised for its quiet refinement, soothing palette, and gracefully composed furniture.
In her first book “Around Beauty”, Ms. Barry shares the exploration of her design philosophy, meditating on the transformative power of beauty and how it inspires and informs her designs. In page after page of gorgeous, subtle, feminine interiors, Barry explains her design process and shares thought-provoking stories.
She discusses what inspires her, from the quality of light to the colors of nature, and illustrates how she uses nature in decoration.

are all expressions of that soul-grounding activity: creating a place that nurtures us and our loved ones, a retreat that keeps us safe and strong and readies us to meet the world’s demands,” says Dominique Browning, former editor-in-chief of House & Garden.
“We all crave beauty, whether we are conscious of it or not...AROUND BEAUTY is more than a book about how to decorate… it shows us how beauty works on Barry’s creative heart and how it influences her thinking; it is the North Star of her design sensibilities.” – Dominique Browning
From the simple strength of a white plate to the sensual elegance of a well-made bed, Barry explains why a gracious life, a well-ordered life, a life around beauty is worth striving for.
In Barry’s world, every detail is harmonious. “Barry understands that the reason we care so deeply about the color on our walls or the texture in our fabrics or the pattern on our carpets is that these

THE CASE OF LUXURY DESIGNAcclaimed designer, Warren Foster-Brown could be called the agent
provocateur of luxury hospitality interiors.By: Tony Smyth
FBEYE International was founded in 2005 by Warren Foster-Brown and boasts a diverse portfolio of luxurious hotels, unique destination resorts, celebrity restaurants, signature spas, grand private residences, mega yachts and commercial offices. Warren’s career has spanned several continents working on luxury developments with leading developers and operators in hospitality such as Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Intercontinental Hotels Group, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. After having spent over a decade in Asia working as the lead designer at two of the world’s leading hospitality interior design consultancies, Warren established FBEYE International to further explore the
fundamentals of hospitality design combined with new concepts in the future of hotel design and guest expectations. In 2009 he was honoured with the prestigious award ‘Wave of the Future 2009’ in Miami, Florida, USA.
Headquartered in Singapore, with offices in Manila, FBEYE has worked on projects in Asia and Europe. Many of the projects undertaken by Warren throughout his career have received critical acclaim with properties that include the St. Regis Hotel, Singapore, Sheraton Sanya Resort, Hainan Shangri-La’s China World Hotel, Beijing PRC and more recent commissions from the Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel and Spa, Switzerland, Four Seasons Resort Landaa Giraavaru Maldives, Westin Hotel Singapore and the InterContinental Singapore.
VICTORIA JUNGFRAU GRAND HOTEL & SPA, INTERLAKEN, SWITZERLAND
Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is located in the heart of Switzerland and enjoys a privileged and picturesque location in Interlaken. Opened in 1865, this historic hotel blends elegance and charm with contemporary comforts and luxuries reflecting its tradition and grandeur. FBEYE is commissioned to undertake the redesign of reception & lobby lounge, 4 F&B outlets, meeting rooms and wedding chapel.
Phase one, recently completed is Quaranta Uno, a marvellous tale of innovative Italian cuisine championed by fine wines, where old meets new and textures and plush fine furnishings welcome guests. Rustic white brick walls, contemporary artworks in antique frames and a custom built display cabinetry sit within the space.
Steeped in history, design elements from the existing hotel were restored from the hotel vaults, a Singer Sewing machine base retrofitted with a top in Italian Carrara marble to form the visual centrepiece.
In the vein of a traditional Italian osteria, Quaranta Uno was designed to be a place to discover food, great wines and friends.
INTERCONTINENTAL SINGAPORE
InterContinental Singapore is exceptional as it is the only “Peranakan” inspired luxury hotel in Singapore – a fast fading culture unique to Singapore that is a blend of several communities, Chinese, Indian, British, Malay and Dutch from the late 15th and 16th centuries.
The Shophouse guestrooms and suites are conserved 1920’s houses synonymous with the Peranakans with elements evoking the lifestyle of Babas and Nyonyas (the male and female descendants of Peranakan culture).
These guestrooms present a residential feel that is tranquil, relaxing and timeless. The careful selection of materials and detailing bring these rooms into the 21st century, creating relaxing & intimate spaces.
Club InterContinental is the executive lounge at the hotel and again is a true reflection of Peranakan residential luxury. FBEYE created a fresh contemporary setting mixed with the elements of the Peranakan history, tying in modern hotel conveniences that today’s guests expect whilst retaining elements of style and sophistication.
Features include a library, meeting room, internet services and dining facilities all alongside a fascinating collection of art and artefacts that redefine luxury in an award-winning venue.
Man Fu Yuan, literally translated as ‘Garden of Prosperity’, is the hotel’s authentic multi-award winning Cantonese restaurant. FBEYE drew design inspiration from nature whilst retaining transitional Chinese elements – a lesson in extreme refinement. The main dining area is complemented by a host of private dining rooms and semi-private dining areas, each unique and finished in exquisite fabrics and rich timbers to enrich the guest’s dining experience.
FBEYE is currently commissioned to design the remainder of the hotel, consisting of 316 guestrooms and suites in the Main tower plus all public areas inclusive of F&B, spa/gym and pool deck.
Four Seasons Hotel
FBEYE brings a diverse portfolio of design styles to reflect the tastes and ideas of the owner whilst integrating them with the brand and operating criteria of the operator whether traditional or contemporary styling to minimalist or thematic dreams.
“All projects revolve around the client’s brief and all are unique,” says Warren. Design begins with extensive research pertaining to the specific project with an emphasis on historical, geographical and cultural influences, regional art and artisans, natural resources, the environment, local building materials and construction capabilities. “This attention to detail culminates in a subtle, yet distinctive, sense of place for all FBEYE designs,” he adds.
Several notable design projects have recently opened this year and reflect the meticulous design aesthetic that FBEYE instils to to each project to give uniquely focused and environmentally conscious properties and have already garnered many awards and accolades.
LE MERIDIEN JIMBARAN BALI
Le Meridien Jimbaran, Bali opened May 2013 featuring 118 guestrooms, suites, penthouses, villas, five F&B Outlets, four function areas, spa and kid’s club. Located in a fishing village, the presence of art/graphics, Mid-Century aesthetics in the furniture and asymmetric designs add to the timeless chic and the Le Meridien brand values.
The designs are more understated oddities rather than in-your-face eccentricities. An example would be the varied designs of wall sconces and pendant lights in the guestrooms and the Mid-Century inspired desk chairs as opposed to the
typical ergonomic chairs. The prominent shapes and forms from walls, furniture and carpets are organic and a sense of place and culture is established in the juxtaposition of heritage or traditional elements with contemporary ideas.
The headboards in the guestrooms are batik prints that are scaled up to add visual texture and a sense of location sadly missing in most modern hotels.

“After a hiatus of nearly 10 years, the Westin brand is returning to Singapore and it is always exciting to design a new-build 5-star hotel at home,” says Warren. “The Westin Singapore is the most talked about and eagerly awaited hotel project in Singapore and we are delighted to play a significant part in its return.”

IN THE PIPELINE
Founded in 1865, the company continues to make its mark in the history of furniture; it has created classic pieces, icons of the avant-garde and is a by word for modern design throughout the world. Today, Walter Knoll is one of the leading international manufacturers of fine up-holstered furniture and office facilities. With designs both classic and modern, with peerless comfort and great durability, products from Walter Knoll create living spaces.
A landscape of cushions at first glance. But Yuuto is so much more. In their search for that special comfort, the designers developed “coussins indépendants”: framework, stretched straps, with the soft upholstery on top. Every seat cushion is effectively a sofa in itself.
Yuuto demonstrates its grandeur down to its very core: matt shimmering servers in copper and bronze are eye-catchers. The practical side tables can be reached from every seat: iPad and remote are quick to hand, tea at five is served without further ado. Different heights, different materials.
All-encompassing and modular, a sofa landscape is created for the entire family, for friends and for guests by the interaction of volumes with deep seat elements and opulent upholstery.

Gordon
Fine drawn-in leather defines the upholstery. It’s almost better than lying down. Familiarly stylish, the Gordon collection comes as a classic single sofa, a récamière, as well as a large corner configuration.
Chic and inviting at the same time: the casual look of the leather complemented by the light down filling of the upholstery.
118
Jaan Living
Cosmopolitan elegance for modern lifestyle. This sofa is a dream come true thanks to its softness that you could literally sink into forever. The spacious leather surfaces of both sofa and récamière seem to float over the understated framework in a balanced harmony of lightness and weight.
Foster 503
Classic comfort created effortlessly. Both lightweight and opulent to look at, spacious upholstery seems as if it is floating. The slimline armrest and backrest behind the soft seat cushions provide the necessary support. Fine studs in the upholstery focus your attention on the detail.
119Walter Knoll Engineering Innovation
Balanced proportions are a top performance of design. Foster 503 sets new standards for classic sofas. Precision and simplicity characterise this version of top-quality furnishing including armchairs and sofas in different sizes. Matching tables in different sizes and heights with table tops in glass and veneer can be found within the Foster 500 and Foster 505 range.

Living Landscape
Living Landscape is a range of sofas that incorporates the room it stands in. It provides the perfect position for the different axes of communication and vision. Just a light touch of the hand turns the corner segments and the chaises longues to face a new direction. The result is a new perspective, a new sofa, a new living room. The calm, spacious shape, the excellent seating comfort and the top-quality design remain. Integrated solid wood shelves, round tables complete the range.
There is even more to come with the Living Platform Loft: just take off the back cushions to create a practical guest bed or comfortable daybed.
The upholstered furniture is a light and elegant feature of any room. And yet it feels so surprisingly voluminous. Fine drawn-in leather defines the spacious seats. Sumptuous back cushions are the perfect invitation to relax.

Foster 520
A new classic of salon culture. The Foster 520 armchair reinterprets the tradition of the club armchair. The designers have made masterly use of the materials: saddle leather with its striking grain for the back, natural fabrics for the seat.
The elaborately finished decorative seam emphasises the sweeping lines of this masterpiece – from the back through the armrests to the opulent seat. With a slight swivel action or quite still on legs: powerful elegance with a perfect dose of laissez-faire – essential for long evenings of charming hospitality, whether in a hotel lobby or at home.
T Ray
The resolute design of this leading architect. The rational shape - clear and logical – takes a new direction with T-Ray. Square and diagonal, volume and expanse combine to create a powerful figure.
Haussmann
Designed in 1962 by Trix and Robert Haussmann, Walter Knoll is reissuing this classic piece of furnishing history. As with all Chesterfield furniture, the characteristic diamond pattern structures back and seat.

Jaan 2
Simplicity as a highly complex art. Andoo looks familiar and excitingly new at the same time. It comes with a high or low back, with or without armrests and a footstool if desired. The solid wood frame is available in nutwood, oak or oak stained wengé.
The extensions to the Jaan Living range create expansive living landscapes. With spacious seat elements on a delicate framework – the hallmark of the award-winning range. The armchair récamière also works in its own right.
It’s the curves that make Bao appealing on first sight. A sumptuous sculpture with an artistic back. In the style of a leather ball, the leather patchwork forms the rear. Flowing lines – sweeping and elegant.
These lasting values make Cuoio Lounge a modern archetype. Minimalist design, understated materials and exact lines complement each other to form this elegant armchair. Simplicity and sustainability as a compelling statement.
The initial design idea determines the shape. The Bellows Chair is an invitation you cannot decline. Like a flower stretching towards the light, the Bellows Chair stretches out towards its owner with an invitation to sit down.

Quiet elegance and understatement for aesthetes. Particular attention was paid to the leather-covered armrests. The masterly detail of the parallel stitching of the hand-sewn seam is eye-catching. A sign of true craftsmanship. Soft and pleasant to touch.
Fabricius
The Fabricius seating group is in the functional design tradition. With its consistency of shape and comfortable upholstery, the Fabricius programme is suitable for entrance halls, meeting rooms, for lobbies or at home.
MyChair
A new slant on things. MYchair is a sculpture in space. It is sweeping and expressive. Impressive from all angles. Slanting, rounded and straight areas give way to each other. The base, seat and back of the lounge chair form a powerful composition.
Flow
Re-interpretation of the bucket seat. Flow combines the charisma of classic forerunners with a contemporary grasp of relaxation. The flat upholstery delivers extraordinary seating comfort.

Sen
Uniting opposites: the opulent upholstery looks like it is floating in the geometric frame. Lines and volumes, hard and soft, heavy and lightweight are clearly separated from one another and yet together have a unique effect. In combination, they are intensified to present an image of timeless elegance.
FK
The thin backrest perfectly traces the clean contours. The soft down padding covering it guarantees a relaxed sitting experience. High-grade leather, fine seam patterns and striking metal are the hallmarks of quality second to none. The swivelling FK 86 demonstrates its strong character whether on its own, in a group or as a complement to a sofa.
Atelier Chair
The Atelier Chair is a gentle ascetic. Leather and steel are the skin and bones – minimised and timeless, elegant and sustainable. Taut leather stretches over the steel framework – just as you would expect of genuine tubular steel furniture. The visible construction reveals the function of the chair.

Inspired by nature, this new collection by Ben van Berkel is cheerful, free and variable. It can be arranged as a single piece or multiple pieces side by side. Suitable for creative spaces in lobbies or in a welcoming entrée.

Gently pulling the round table tops apart doubles the usable surface. There is a choice of different heights and sizes of table tops. The round table tops are either completely made of glass or combined with wengé veneer.
Joco is sophisticatedly elegant. The wire structure carries the slimline table top. Apparently weightless but totally stable. The lasered squares on the round table top follow the regularity of geometry. Patterns and lightplay are the result.

A reminder of the origin of sitting together: the round table. This is where family and friends get together; this is where you have discussions and enjoy a meal together – a true meeting place within the home. Original and convivial, the Bellows dining table embodies conviviality in a charming lifestyle.
Joco

People have a relationship with furniture. In the best case scenario, they become reliable partners for years. But for that to happen, they need to be of exceptional quality. To Walter Knoll, fulfilling the wishes of each customer is a commitment which creates trust, and that means Quality & Craftsmanship - a result of the finest skills and years of experience.
A EULOGY TO LEATHERThe aura of good leather underlines the quality of design. Natural unevenness lends even more character, a definite sign of life. It is actually one of the characteristics of the very best leathers, along with suppleness and a minimal amount of dye, allowing the leather to breathe. Leather itself comes alive the older it gets, enriched by its own patina.
Soft and elastic on the one hand, durable and sturdy on the other, leather covers reflect how they are used. The selection of hides and the develop-ment of colours are two of the most important decisions for the subsequent quality of the furniture.
THREADS AND SHAPESCutting leather is about craftsmanship and high technology. Clean seam patterns, precise seams in different constructions and exact piping determine the value of upholstered furniture. The basis of this is long years of experi-ence working with fabrics and leather, an understanding of how best to combine pieces, and extreme dexterity for the fine seams of the often heavy leather covers.
CONSTRUCTED FOR COMFORTThe inner life of upholstered furniture is the basis for seating comfort. The pre-upholstery creates the prerequisite for the exact fit of the cover. The construction of the frame and cushioning is determined by the design. Frames made of wood or metal are the base. On top of that, you have the cushioning. Moulds and foam of varying densities model the cushions. The cushions fillings are chosen according to the use of the piece of furniture and the best possible ergonomic comfort. From the casual family sofa to the prestigious reception programme, the upholstered structure underlines the particular function.
THE MARK OF QUALITYSuccessful products are the result of teamwork. The complex network for fulfilling customer requirements extends from the very first idea to the actual delivery. Designers, furniture makers, customer advisors and craftsmen of various professions do their utmost to achieve the best results in terms of design, comfort, function and ergonomics. Masterly craftsmanship, select materials and technological precision all play their part in achieving the perfect form.
The design determines the character. The material and design determine the charm of the furniture just as clothes make all the difference to how a person appears.

STATE OF THE ART“Art is part of our soul and it will always be reflected in our works,” says Patty. Not surprisingly, works of art dot the sleek, spacious offices of Suying Metropolitan Studio. There is the serene sculpture of Buddha with his eyes shut by Taiwanese artist Li Zhen.
It is a perfect environment for Edmund, who spent his first paycheck some 18 years ago on a contemporary-style Chinese ink wash painting by Li Yuen Shao and whose wife runs an art gallery. “Since young, I have been surrounded by art,” says Edmund. “I had an uncle who worked in the National Arts Council, and I was exposed to it from an early age. It was part and parcel of growing up.”
His interests run the gamut from contemporary Buddhist art and Asian art to postmodern conceptual art. The works of Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei, in particular, strikes a chord with Edmund. “I see his works as social statements,” he shares. “They challenge conventional thinking and forward the social causes of the Chinese people.”
Currently, he is contemplating purchasing a lot of the artist’s porcelain sunflower seeds, which was exhibited at the Tate Modern as part of its Unilever Series. Titled Kui Hua Za in Mandarin, each seed is hand-sculpted and painted by artisans in China’s Jingdezhen, traditionally famous for its exquisite porcelain. Together, they represent a counter narrative to the buy-and-throw ‘Made in China’ mass products that flood the markets these days.
Edmund has already bought two chairs from one of Ai’s Documenta 12 Fairytale performance installations at Documenta Kassel, where Ai famously sent 1,001 Chinese farmers, vendors, workers, students, many of whom have never travelled outside China, to Kassel in Germany for one week. “There is nothing physically special about the chairs I bought; they are just old Qing Dynasty wooden chairs, ” Edmund says. “It’s what they mean, their significance, that I value.”
He also collects the works of contemporary local artists including Hong Zhu An, whose works in traditional Chinese ink wash fuses the techniques of Western oil paintings. “He is very under-rated; very few artists have such a breakthrough in the evolvement of the tradition,” Edmund observes.

The limited edition Grandtour lounge chair, presented in co-branding with Maserati and designed by Ludovica+Roberto Palomba, is a ground-breaking new product, with its innovative ergonomic seat inspired by the elegant forms of Maserati vehicles.
The harmonious, dashing lines of the Maserati Quattroporte were analysed, broken down, reproduced and reinterpreted by the Palombas until the shape of the lounge chair Maserati by Zanotta emerged, thus opening the seat to travel, in a new dimension, which makes it the star of times for imagination, memory and thought.
This is what the lounge chair Maserati by Zanotta intends to be - a product of absolute excellence, an opportunity to create a moment ‘out of time’, an itinerary of the senses that is deliberately renewed every time you sit in a Maserati or relax in one of the precious Zanotta armchairs.

THE SENSE
What is the key element in the design project of an upholstered item? What does a designer keep in mind when he approaches the creation of a sofa for an industry?
Damian Williamson, author of the new series William, responds with two basic “recipes”: In the first place there is the meeting with the project and this centres on what I call “the sense of touch”.
A sofa, or an armchair, must tell the user: touch me. The immediate perception of comfort is important. Then we
come to the second experience of the project: aesthetics and proportions. At this point we find relations with materials, which belong to the world of the company that commissions the work or that wants to send a design in for production.
People like it because it has the right combination of elements of modern tradition, because it is both minimal and rich, it can be customized, and it is decidedly comfort-able. William issues from the idea of de-structuring sofas into ‘comfort layers’, not just visually but in practice, starting from the structural elastic bottom layer, moving on
to a central layer of polyurethane foam and, finally, to an ultra soft top layer made of goose down.
The three layers entice the user to establish physical relations with the sofa. From the first glance they declar what they are made of and their capacity to hold the body comfortably.
Moreover, they sustain the back rest and seem to float on die cast aluminum legs. William has a steel frame with elastic strips springing and polished aluminum alloy feet, while the external removable cover is made of fabric or leather. The collection includes sofas and day bed. The modular version is designed for linear modularity or corner solutions.

By combining rectilinear sheet iron steel frames with simple thick beautifully-grained leather sling seats, designer Terry Dwan has created an unexpected yet profoundly impactful
aesthetic. The juxtaposition of the materials – iron and leather – is just magnificent.
Its shape reminds of the characteristic threads of screws, basic elements for any kind of construction. At the same time, the word “vitae” brings back to the concept of existence and to the circle of life, something the Riva brothers pay a lot of attention to, through practices such as environmental friendliness and respect for future generations.

Clessidra
Clessidra (hourglass), a product of the fertile imagination of Mario Botta. A stool worked from a single block of fragrant cedar wood. Using a unique procedure, the block of cedar is worked till it takes on this highly original form that looks almost like to hemispheres one balanced on the other. Clessidra can also be “stacked”: thanks to a metal pin that can be inserted into the centre of the seat, one stool can be set on another to make a “sculpture” as well as an interesting piece of furniture.
Bi
The two “ends” of the occasional table/stool are in fact both made to perform the functions of table top or seat as well as the base having contact with the floor. Bi is made of solid cedar-wood. Its surface is slightly wavy and the shape is obtained by using a digitally programmed machine and finishing by hand.
Sid
Sid is produced from a single piece of solid è fragrant cedar wood, cut and worked along the simplest of lines to give it a slimmer shape without sacrificing stability. Its shape is intended to give a modern twist to the old-fashioned stools you used to see at the doors of little country villages.
Riva's "Falo" tables have a glass top resting on a stack of secured wooden planks that are available in walnut, oak, or cherry wood.

The second highlight of the event was the deconstructed series of work on the legendary Vanity Fair which fully demonstrates the skill of Poltrona Frau’s craftsmen and the quality that goes into the making of the armchair.
