Reflection Today the word of God has brought us to a very familiar terrain: farming. Many of us here are farmers or
related to one who farms and obviously know a lot about what is involved in farming like preparing the ground,
choosing the seed and that which is at times beyond their control, the weather. All of these play to a great extent,
significant roles in producing bountiful harvest.
We are in a way God's farm land. He has made provisions for everything to enable him to expect a rich
harvest which is the salvation of our souls: "For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the
children of God ... as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies." (2nd reading) Such provisions include
in farming language, favorable weather and best of seeds: "Just as ... rain and snow come down and do not
return ... till they have watered the earth ... so shall my word be ..." (1st reading) The word of God which is the
seed has also been provided.
Beyond the favorable weather and best of seeds is another determining factor for a good harvest and this is
where the effort of the farmer is needed most: the soil preparation. "A sower went to sow. As he sowed, some
seed fell on the path... some fell on rocky ground ... some seeds fell among thorns ... but some fell on rich
soil ..." (Gospel)
A path, rocky, thorn or rich soil describe the disposition of each individual heart and its preparedness to
receive the word of God. Which one best describes the disposition of your heart as you listen to the word of God?
A 'path heart' could be an unprepared soul; a 'rocky heart' could be an unbelieving soul; a 'thorn heart' could be a
distracted soul while a 'rich soil heart' could be a firm believer's soul where the word of God finds a home.
No one's heart or soul is predisposed for any of the above realities. Your heart is what you make of it.
They are like different fields prepared differently by individual farmers who use the same seeds and are exposed
to the same weather condition. How do you prepare your heart towards receiving the divine word? When God has
done his part, the extent of your harvest remains how much effort you put into making his grace work for you.
God bless you!

1st Reading IS 55:10-11 Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.
Responsorial Psalm PS 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14 R. (Lk 8:8) The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. You have visited the land and watered it; greatly have you en-riched it. God’s watercourses are filled; you have prepared the grain. R. The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. Thus have you prepared the land: drenching its furrows, breaking up its clods, Softening it with showers, blessing its yield. R. The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. You have crowned the year with your bounty, and your paths overflow with a rich harvest; The untilled meadows overflow with it, and rejoicing clothes the hills. R. The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. The fields are garmented with flocks and the valleys blanketed with grain. They shout and sing for joy. R. The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.
2nd Reading ROM 8:18-23
Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.
Gospel MT 13:1-9 On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen
