Presidents Report

May is here, and there is a lot of things going on. We have a lot of events on the calendar as well as other car events that are going on around the Bay Area. Cars and Coffee is the latest trend for getting cars and guys/gals together in various locations around the Bay Area. It’s usually the 1st Sunday of the Month, and our local spot is in the Vintage Oaks Shopping Center in Novato. I know last month several of our members attended. You will see all makes and models which makes it very interesting. Check it out, if you get a chance.

Between the Drive N Dines, and the regular Socials scheduled, Jane has a lot for us to do. Look out for the Drive N Dines on the first Wednesday of the month, and this month’s social is a Progressive, taking us up to Clear Lake. You never know what surprises might be in store for you. You’re never too old to act like a kid, so I will teach those of you that want, to fly, when you come to Lower Lake. It will be a great time, so don’t miss out. In the Town of Clear Lake there is a Best Western (707-994-2000) and Travelodge (707-994-1499), if you don’t feel like driving back Saturday Night.

Ken has found out that the Great Race this year is starting in San Rafael June 18th, and we are looking into how we might be able to assist them, not to mention being around all these interesting cars. More to follow. This is also the day of our social in San Rafael in the afternoon, so mark your calendars and make a day of it.

I am putting together a overnighter to Fort Bragg in August. See the flyer and make your reservations NOW. This will be a nice relaxed drive to our own Sonoma County Coast and back, with an overnight stay in Fort Bragg.

Sorry I missed the meeting last month, but I was at a mandatory workshop for ServiceMaster in Las Vegas, but I did make it to the Pizza Parlor about 9:15. Thanks to Ken for running the meeting. This month I will also be gone on a Horseless Carriage Tour in a 1909, 2 cylinder, Maxwell Roadster over in Oakdale. I will report on it next month. In the mean time I will be at our other events which are more exciting anyway. Thanks for your support.

Ken is working on possible auto cross sites, but if we find one the cost may be a limiting factor. Nothing has changed at the Solano College, so we will keep check back with them, and keep looking for other sites.

The bylaw committee is revising our bylaws and should have something for review soon. That’s it for now,

See you at the Drive n Dine.

Eric Larson

VP Report

As I have mentioned at the last couple of meetings, The Great Race will be starting in San Rafael on Saturday morning, June 18. See the press release in this issue of the newsletter. With the go ahead from the club, I have volunteered us to help get race started. I’m told there will be 136 cars, one leaving every minute, starting at 10am, so you can see that this will take some organization. So, please let me know if you want to help. I’ll have a signup sheet at the next meeting. This should be fun. They are also planning on having a car show there once the Great Race cars are gone and they would like some Corvettes there. I’ll have more on that when I learn more.

Autocross sights are still hard to find, but Santa Clara Corvettes seems to have a line up on the Cow Palace. I haven’t been there in years, so I don’t know the condition of the parking lot, but apparently they seem to feel it is good. They are asking for some help. I don’t know if it is because of the price, or just that they feel they are putting on enough autocrosses and hope someone else will pitch in on this one. I should have more info after this weekend. The Moffett Field idea is on hold at the present time. There seems to be some inside issues, so we’ll have to wait and see if it is a viable location.

By the time you read this, the factory Corvettes will have placed 1st & 2nd at Laguna Seca. Well, I hope that is the case anyway! Wait and see. If you can’t make it to the track, you can watch all the fun on Fox Sports 1 on Sunday at 11am.

Announcements: To all North Bay Members: We have the opportunity to tour the Calif. Highway Patrol Academy Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) in Sacramento. The track they have there is 1.75 miles with a high speed banked turn as well as a flat "S" turn. The course is used to train CHP recruits as well as allied agencies. The vehicles they use are Dodge Chargers that have full roll cages, 5-point seatbelts and just 2 seats. These vehicle's engines are also upgraded over the normal, stock horsepower Charger. There is the possibility of getting demo rides in these cars but I don't know right now. Also, I will see if they will do a lead - follow with them and us in our Corvettes. There also is a skid pad they use for training. All of the instructors are fully trained CHP driving instructors. This tour could be scheduled during a weekday but also maybe on a Sat. This track and the Academy was opened in 1977. I went through this 3 day EVOC course in March of '77 right after I was hired by Santa Rosa PD. I can say that it was excellent and fun and the instructors are well trained. The best part was the test on the last day - a pursuit chasing an instructor on a mini street course with other students doing parking and driving exercises to make it real. (I also went through their 2 week Police Motorcycle Enforcement Training Course - by far the best school I ever went to.) Please let me know if you are interested in going so I can get a head count and start working on a date with CHP. We can also look at places to go after for lunch. Thanks, Kevin McKinnie [email protected]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2016 Great Race to start in San Rafael June 18 San Rafael, Calif., will host the start of the 2016 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty Saturday, June 18, race organizers have announced.

The Great Race, the world’s premiere old car rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles downtown to Fourth Street for the $150,000 event.

The race will finish June 26 in Moline, Ill., on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Along the 2,400-mile route, competitors will travel parts of the Lincoln Highway in six states – California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Iowa and Illinois – in addition to a side trip to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore and the Badlands.

Page 12: PROMOTING THE SAFE AND ENJOYABLE OPERATION OF AMERICA'S ... · PROMOTING THE SAFE AND ENJOYABLE OPERATION OF AMERICA'S ONLY TRUE SPORTS CAR MAY 2016 M O M S ... Ken Albers . 707-448-4499

The Great Race, which began 33 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins.

Cars start – and hopefully finish – one minute apart if all goes according to plan. The biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each day, organizers say.

The cars will stage on Fourth between A and D streets starting at 8 a.m. The official start is at 10 a.m. with a new car leaving every minute until about noon. Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars for several hours. It is common for kids to climb in the cars for a first-hand look. The City of San Rafael is helping with plans locally.

Cars built in 1972 and earlier are eligible, with most entries having been manufactured before World War II. In the 2015 Great Race a 1916 Hudson Hillclimber won the event when it finished on the Santa Monica Pier. That vehicle, driven by Fairport, N.Y., native Howard Sharp and navigated by his son Doug, will again be in this year’s event. They won $50,000 for finishing first overall.

A 1916 Hudson Indy Racer, a 1916 Hudson Four Passenger Speedster, a 1916 Chevrolet Phaeton, a 1917 Peerless Racer and a chain-driven 1918 American LaFrance Speedster are the oldest cars in the event.

The 2016 winners will again receive $50,000 of the $150,000 total purse.

Over the decades, the Great Race has stopped in hundreds of cities big and small, from tiny Austin, Nev., to New York City.

“When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant festival,” race director Jeff Stumb said. “Last year we had three overnight stops with more than 10,000 spectators on our way to having 250,000 people see the Great Race during the event.”

The overnight stops, in order, are Old Sacramento, Calif.; Reno, Nev.; Elko, Nev.; Evanston, Wyo.; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Rapid City, S.D.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa; before finishing in Moline.

Lunch stops, in order, are Vacaville, Calif.; Gardnerville, Nev.; Austin, Nev.; Wendover, Utah; Rawlins, Wyo.; Lusk, Wyo.; Chamberlain, S.D.; Mason City, Iowa; and Walcott, Iowa.

The event was started in 1983 by Tom McRae and it takes its name from the 1965 movie, The Great Race, which starred Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood and Peter Falk. The movie is a comedy based on the real life 1908 automobile race from New York to Paris. In 2004, Tony Curtis was the guest of the Great Race and rode in his car from the movie, the Leslie Special.

The Great Race gained a huge following from late night showings on ESPN when the network was just starting out in the early 1980s. The first entrant, Curtis Graf of Irving, Texas, is still a participant today.

The event’s main sponsors are Hemmings Motor News, Hagerty, Coker Tire, Reliable Carriers and Toyota.

For more information, go to www.greatrace.com or contact Jeff Stumb at [email protected] or by calling him at 423-648-8542.

NEWS FROM WESTERN STATES CORVETTE COUNCIL From General Meeting held April 16, 2016 (Dan Divita) The meeting was held at Momentum Chevrolet in San Jose. Twelve clubs were represented personally, and 11 were represented by proxy. Vice President Kathy Pimentel will not be seeking re-election to the Board of Directors. Executive Secretary Dan Divita will not be seeking re-election to the Board of Directors. Financially, WSCC is sound. We are in the process of converting from an accounting year that ends in August, to a calendar fiscal year. Awaiting IRS approval. Andy Hoepfner, webmaster, will be re-vamping the WSCC website in the near future. He is attempting to make it more inter-active for users and clubs, so that they may update the site themselves. The WSCC Application is available on site, and can be downloaded and filled out on your computer, which we hope will eliminate the problem of illegible applications. In an effort to increase the add value to WSCC memberships, we are trying to provide more events and services for our members. The first this year will be to co-sponsor a Hooked-On-Driving event at Laguna Seca Raceway on May 2. WSCC members will receive $50 off the cost of this event. In addition to Hooked-On-Driving, a “Taste of the Track” opportunity will be available for $100 so that novice drivers can experience the track at a “spirited” speed during a 20 minute session. On October 12, the annual Thunder Hill run will be held, beginning with lunch in Maxwell, and ending with a Parade Lap at the Thunder Hill Raceway. Details on the WSCC Website. Santa Clara Corvettes is making arrangements to hold an auto-x at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Updated information will be made available when the deal is finalized. They are also proposing a change to the Competition Code to re-instate the “A” Class. A new club has joined WSCC. Family and Friends Corvettes is based in Vallejo. An ad-hoc Convention meeting was held immediately after the business meeting. A proposal was submitted by Buzz Marston to change the current annual convention policy to make it a bi-annual event. We would also locate “semi-permanent” locations, one in the north and one in the south, to which we would return every other year. After considerable discussion and debate, the consensus seemed to be that a single location (Las Vegas) would be selected since that location had venues for all competitive events, plus opportunities for additional activities for varied interests. More discussion will be undertaken before a final proposal is put before the Council Clubs. Please utilize the WSCC website: www.wscc.ws to find out what’s going on, and obtain information that you may want. Officer contact information is also available on that site.
