CICA Moves Headquarters to New Management Company

In June, Erica Fearn, CICA’s Executive Director, proposed to Association Resources (AR) that she spin off CICA and two other AR clients to create the foundation for her new association management company, Mainspring Association Management LLC. The process involved requiring approval from client boards. AR asked CICA to consider approving the transfer of their management contract to Erica and her new company.

In late June the CICA Executive Committee approved the transfer from AR to Mainspring Association Management LLC. The decision to transfer the contract was made in the best interest of CICA allowing for continuity with CICA’s program of work, YourMembership™ database, and strategic growth. Erica will continue to be the key staff person providing service to CICA. Our physical address has been changed; phone and email will remain the same. John Aliberti, our Association Administrator, did not move with Erica. He remains at AR. The transfer to Mainspring Association Management LLC occurred on July 1, 2017.

IA’s First Ever Irrigation Curriculum for Elementary Schools

As part of its new public affairs initiative, the Irrigation Association has created its first elementary school curriculum. Focusing on grades three through five, the curriculum’s activities take the student on a journey through the benefits of irrigation, including agriculture, landscape and its history.

The IA collaborated with Young Minds Inspired to develop and distribute the curriculum. During the initial rollout, the curriculum was distributed to more than 10,000 schools in four states: California, Florida, Nebraska and Texas.

CONNECTICUT WATER PLANNING COUNCIL SEEKS PUBLIC OPINION IN DRAFT OF STATE WATER PLAN

Finalized Plan to be presented to the Governor and Legislature in 2018. The members of the Connecticut Water Planning Council (WPC) today announced that they have published a draft version of the State Water Plan that they have been developing onto the council’s website (www.ct.gov/water) and have opened a public review period to give Connecticut residents, businesses, and other stakeholders an opportunity to provide feedback before it is finalized early next year. Between July 20 and November 20, 2017, interested parties will have an opportunity to review the draft plan and provide the group with their comments.

The draft plan recommends a framework for managing Connecticut’s water into the future and for achieving balance with our many human and environmental needs as climate trends emerge and new needs develop. It addresses the quality and quantity of water for drinking, ecology, recreation, business, industry, agriculture, energy, and wastewater assimilation.

The WPC members stressed that the input of Connecticut’s citizens is crucial to the development and implementation of the plan to ensure it is fair and effective at balancing the needs of all water users while protecting a valuable resource.

The creation of the State Water Plan was required following the adoption of a new state law, Public Act 14-163, which directed the WPC to formulate a plan that will help planners, regulators, and lawmakers make decisions about managing Connecticut’s water in a manner that is consistent throughout the state. The group’s draft plan reflects the input of various stakeholders, committee members and public participants. They intend to present a final document to the Governor and various legislative committees in 2018.

The council will hold public hearings on the draft plan across the state during late summer and fall, and they will also use technological resources to advertise and educate the public on the plan throughout this period. Details of the WPC’s public outreach efforts, information on how to comment, and links to other resources will be available in the coming weeks at www.ct.gov/water.

The WPC is comprised of four members: John W. Betkoski (Chair), Vice Chairman, Public Utilities Regulatory AuthorityGarrett Eucalitto, Undersecretary, Office of Policy and ManagementBetsey Wingfield, Bureau Chief, Department of Energy and Environmental ProtectionLori Mathieu, Drinking Water Section Chief, Department of Public HealthA copy of the draft plan and associated resources can be found at www.ct.gov/water.

IA Technical Paper Library Now Available

The IA has posted over 800 papers containing thousands of pages of valuable information presented at the Irrigation Show and Education Conference technical programs for the past 15 years. The technical paper library is now available on the IA website and is a valuable resource that allows users to download individual papers on a wide variety of topics. Papers covering both agricultural and landscape irrigation are available and have been grouped together by year.

By making the papers available online, visitors can easily search for subjects or authors. While on the technical papers webpage, users can utilize the search function on their computers (ctrl+F for PC users or command+F for Mac users) to pull up a search box in the upper right corner of the screen. (Please note, this is not the keyword search option that already appears on the page.) Typing in a subject or author will quickly find all matches in the technical paper library. This same search function can be used within the individual paper PDFs to find key words.

The 2010 and 2015 papers are listed by title and author; however, these papers must be accessed through the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers website using the link provided. The IA partnered with the ASABE to co-sponsor the irrigation symposiums in 2010 and 2015, and the copyright for papers presented during those years belongs to the ASABE.

Making the presentations of many different irrigation experts readily available to those interested in the industry has been a priority of the IA Technical Program Committee, and it ensures that the IA remains the recognized authority on irrigation.

For more information, visit the IA website or contact IA Industry Development Director Brent Mecham, CID, CLWM, CIC, CLIA, CAIS (703.536.7080).
