Letter From The EditorJames Nolan
Everything is Different.
Our fashion editor-at-large Zeina Esmail said this to me when we sat down to tally up the trends for Spring 2014.That doesn’t mean we need to torch everything in our closets. But it does mean that we need to start looking at things in new
ways. This is exactly what many designers did for spring. Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, whose cuts are usually quite severe, is offering soft, goddess-y draping. Céline’s Phoebe Philo has abandoned minimalism for explosive streaks of colour.
What is Cruise? Why are we suddenly talking about a new season while still knee-high boot in the last one? And does it mean that beautiful Dolce & Gabbana dress you just bought is already passé? Absolutely not – for one thing, beautiful Dolce dresses are never passé. Cruise lifts you over the muddy waters of transition, referencing trends on both sides of the fashion equator. Plus, you get the bonus of longevity and freshness, preserved because these shows are not subject to the same scru-
tiny as the spring/summer and fall/winter collections.
Dress with confidence, that’s what we will leave you with.
