1. Introduction Cloud computing has been around for decades, but never as prominently as it is today. Advancements in cloud technology, coupled with the increased pace of business and steeper competition, has more and more organizations across all verticals turning to the cloud. In addition to the massive savings associated with cloud adoption, companies that have already implemented this platform have realized many other benefits, such as increased speed, flexibility and agility, as well as streamlined business processes. Budgets for cloud computing have steadily grown over the last few years. A 2015 Computerworld Forecast Study indicates that cloud computing initiatives are the most important project for the majority of IT departments today and are expected to cause the most disruption in the future. The study found that a 42 percent spending increase in cloud computing is predicted this year. A considerable trend among larger organizations is the use of hybrid cloud models, the usage of an on-premise cloud platform alongside a public IaaS provider. A Research and Markets report suggests that the hybrid cloud market is expected to grow from $25.28 billion in 2014 to $84.67 billion by 2019. Just as adoption is growing in the cloud space, the number of solutions offered in the market is also becoming larger. Enterprises are looking for a dependable, scalable, flexible and resilient platform on which to build their cloud infrastructure. An IBM Business Partner, Prolifics has over 35 years of experience working with companies to implement customized, end-to-end IT solutions. With 1,500 employees and 14 offices worldwide, Prolifics has expertise in many industries, from banking and financial services to retail, insurance, government, education and telecommunications. This document is intended to provide an overview of Prolifics’ vision for a soup-to-nuts implementation for on-premise and hybrid clouds, which have become a major catalyst for business growth and differentiation, improving the economics of IT and helping clients seamlessly meet business requirements while continuing to deliver new products and services faster — without interruption or security breaches. Here is how this document is structured:
• A set of introductory sections where general concept, definitions, and overall flow are presented. We delve into the overall solution architecture and provide a graphical representation of a common set of situations under which the solution can be used.

• Finally, we wrap up this white paper with a summary and provide recommendations on next steps.
2. Why Hybrid Cloud The need to deploy new and innovative capabilities faster to stay on pace with demand and ahead of competitors is driving many businesses to cloud computing. Power demands now exceed legacy data center limits, which can result in failure to meet availability or respond time to SLAs, application failures that can impact other applications that live on the same server and inconsistent response times for high-priority applications at peak usage. These legacy systems can lead to high capital expenditures and the slow acquisition of development resources. Cloud-ready organizations see the value of using a hybrid cloud model in all areas of the business, from business leaders and IT managers down to the developers:
• Business leaders see this model as a vehicle to become a composable business. IBM describes a composable business as one that takes an integrated, agile approach and is marked by both continuous improvement of business processes and real-time, informed decision making via data and analytics. This approach allows organizations to drive strategies to market faster.
• IT managers, who may be uneasy about the implications of cloud and the fear of losing relevancy and involvement, see the value of a flexible IT infrastructure underpinned by a hybrid cloud model.
• Developers gain more influence over how cloud projects are designed and implemented. They want to focus on creating a great experience without having to worry about the infrastructure, and they will give up some control in return for speed.
Prepare Your Existing Infrastructure for Cloud Before embarking on a cloud project, you must first prepare your existing infrastructure. Ask your business these questions:
• Optimize IT: How do you optimize systems of record to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) and free resources to invest in innovation? How do you use patterns to help rapidly deploy infrastructure and encapsulate best practices?
• Enable Hybrid Cloud: Do you securely integrate with back-end systems? Do you use templates and mediations to rapidly access existing systems and APIs to simplify and govern access to data?
• Prepare for Hyper Scale: Do you have an elastic infrastructure to handle increased and unpredictable loads? Do you use caching to minimize back-end calls, automate health monitoring, and automate corrective actions?
• Strategic Use of SaaS: Can you use applications without the hassle of building, operating, and maintaining the app and infrastructure? Are you able to reduce costs by paying only for what you use?
• Next-Generation Engaging Apps: Do you need to mix and match ecosystems with complete flexibility to rapidly build engaging apps born on the cloud from services and APIs?
3. The Prolif ics Hybrid Cloud Approach 3.1. Build, Manage, and Monitor the End-‐to-‐End Application Deployment Process The Prolifics solution to setting up private and hybrid clouds provides customers agility and efficiencies in their current application automation process. Prolifics leverages four IBM products to automate, manage and monitor the end-to-end application deployment process: IBM Pure Application System, IBM UrbanCode Deploy, and IBM Tivoli Monitoring. Each component of the overall architecture has been specifically chosen for the different capabilities it offers. IBM PureApplication System is an all-in-one appliance for creating a private cloud that greatly reduces the time it takes to deploy new environments while greatly increasing the reliability and consistency between different environments. It accomplishes this through the use of a software deployment technology called “Patterns.” Patterns in PureApplication System are reusable template topologies for a set of applications. They do not include application-specific information like application code or configuration, which varies from environment to environment. It also provides a single point of contact for a self-service catalog of offerings, which coordinate the deployment of patterns and applications on PureApplication System along with configuration of other systems. The reason for this choice is that the PureApplication system is not the only system in the datacenter. Creating a functioning software development, test or production environment will also involve touching systems outside of Pure Application System such as creating junctions in ISAM, accessing credentials in a credential vault or interfacing with existing service management systems.
Provision, Manage, and Monitor your WebSphere Environments Software Patterns in IBM Pure Application System represent empty “shells” that contain deployed and ready middleware and operating systems, but there is still the matter of deploying and configuring application-specific code. IBM UrbanCode Deploy (UCD) manages all of the application-specific and environment-specific information and can deploy different versions of application code and configuration onto pattern instances running in Pure Application system.
Self-‐Service-‐based Platform Provisioning
Page 8 of 19
In addition to UCD, Prolifics also leverages Prolifics Build Conductor (PBC), which adds out-of-the-box scripts to automate the build, deploy and integration test cycle for WebSphere applications with IBM Rational Team Concert. PBC allows the customer to start continuous integration from day one without having to write homegrown scripts. PBC supports many WebSphere application platforms, including WebSphere ESB, WebSphere Process Server, WebSphere Portal Server and IBM Integration Bus. This solution makes it easy to move code through different environments and deploy across different environments. Finally, end-to-end monitoring and deep-dive analysis of application bottlenecks is an important aspect of keeping systems running at top performance. IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM), coupled with the capability of SmartCloud APM monitoring for WebSphere, allows for monitoring for WebSphere-based application deployments that complement the diagnostic information provided by the integrated monitoring in Pure Application System. By following the Prolifics approach, customers gain many benefits, including:
• Speed: Quicker application time to market from the initial build and deployment to eventual managed support
• Simplicity: An IT environment that is simpler to deploy, customize, safeguard and manage
• Agility: A higher level of business agility across an application’s lifecycle and dynamic scaling to meet usage spikes
• Efficiency: Enhanced performance with auto balancing of application resources
3.2. Secure the Cloud Environment with IBM SIM/SAM, QRadar, and AppScan Cloud’s benefits are far-reaching, and technologies continue to advance, yet security remains a major concern for organizations looking to adopt a cloud or hybrid platform. Reports state that comfort levels are rising—more organizations have begun to put sensitive data on public clouds. A 2014 Ponemon study, however, found that more than a third of businesses expect a negative impact on their security posture. Particularly for companies in the health care, financial and other sectors that fall under compliance issues, properly securing sensitive data in centers hosted by a third-party provider is critical—whether it’s health care information that falls under HIPAA regulations, credit card and customer confidentiality information that falls under PCI compliance or other forms of customer data. A separate 2014 Ponemon Institute study, commissioned by SafeNet, Inc., a global leader in data protection, indicates that IT staffs are not confident in their control over the management and security of data in the cloud. According to the survey, only 38 percent of organizations have clearly defined roles and accountability for safeguarding confidential or sensitive information in the cloud. Adding to the confusion, 44 percent of corporate data stored in cloud environments is not managed or controlled by the IT department. Furthermore, according to the findings,
Page 9 of 19
more than two-thirds (71 percent) of respondents say it is more difficult to protect sensitive data in the cloud using conventional security practices. Prolifics finds its clients are mainly concerned with reduced visibility into cloud infrastructure, less control over security policies, new threats against shared environments and the complexity of demonstrating compliance. The key to expelling these concerns is with robust security tools. IBM Cloud Security Solutions offer a comprehensive top-to-bottom solution that includes secure virtual hosted infrastructure (IaaS), cloud security development tools (PaaS) and born-in-the-cloud security as a service applications (SaaS)—each designed with an integration and global-deployment of hybrid cloud security approach. The IBM security package also offers a number of other solutions in:
• Identity Management • SIEM • Fraud Prevention • Intrusion Prevention • Application Security • Professional and Managed Cloud Services
IBM’s integrated approach begins with IBM Security Identity and Access Manager. This automated virtual offering allows users to administer, secure and monitor user access privileges and activities in all enterprise and online environments. Authenticated users allowed access to specific data, applications or services hosted on a third-party cloud service provider are monitored through security gateways, which determine if the users are authenticated and authorized to access specific information. Most organizations have different levels of authorization for different employees of varying pay grades, and this offering manages these levels of access privileges and safeguards data and applications.
IBM Security Identity and Access Management
Page 10 of 19
IBM QRadar Security Intelligence Platform and IBM Big Data Platform combine real-time correlation for continuous insight, custom analytics across massive structured and unstructured data and forensic capabilities for irrefutable evidence. This basically means the setting up of virtual tripwires, which are activated when someone tries to access something they are not supposed to. These alert reports are sent directly to the security team, which is notified of the breach.
IBM QRadar Security Intelligence Platform IBM Security AppScan improves application security by scanning your applications and services for vulnerabilities before they get deployed. It also detects if an application gets hacked by an outside entity. Scans conclude with reports and recommendations for fixes, if appropriate. These multiple layers of protection are set up by Prolifics’ team before any part of the business is activated on the cloud. While database and security hacks can happen to anyone using either the cloud or traditional data centers, these security measures set organizations up to obey laws and meet compliance regulations, thereby protecting against liability.

3.3. Universal Connectivity for Hybrid Cloud Using IBM API Management and IBM Integration Bus The complexity of managing new technologies alongside current applications is an increasingly common problem for growing organizations. As companies merge or restructure, they must be able to connect new and old applications across departments and domains. Delivery of data must be assured across a multitude of operating systems and environments, with the performance and throughput to match any business requirements. Over time in most IT environments, the Applications become tightly coupled, and making a change means opening up the application and directly impacting each existing consumer. This leads to a lack of flexibility and slow reactions to changing business, a major reason for both the high cost of maintaining systems and the difficulty in diagnosing and resolving issues. As a result, companies spend their IT budgets managing interfaces—not applications—which slows the deployment of solutions and decreases agility. Following are some of the most common symptoms of a poorly integrated IT environment, which lengthen delivery time and increase both cost and project risk:
• Duplicate systems and redundant processes • Relevant information that is difficult to access in real-time • Inability to track transactions through processes • High degree of manual intervention in processes • Technology not aligned with business needs

The Prolifics Connectivity Framework is a comprehensive end-to-end SOA-based solution.
Prolifics Connectivity for Applications
System of Awareness for Applications The Prolifics Connectivity Framework, built on the IBM product suite, delivers new capabilities and productivity aids that provide a simple way for an application developer to compose applications. Once in place, integration between applications can be instrumented, and events flowed to the Enterprise Service Bus for inclusion in centralized monitoring, audit or analytics activities. Simple connectivity tasks for application developers, such as service versioning, are supported by drag-and-drop graphical data mapping and prebuilt developer patterns. This enables applications to connect to each other, as well as to external standard interfaces such as XML, REST, JSON, and web services. Integration logic developed in the Application Server environment can emit events that can be captured by the Enterprise Service Bus. This data can then be flowed to business activity monitoring (BAM) solutions, stored in a system of record for audit purposes or sent to a data warehouse for processing by business analytics engines.
Decision Services The Prolifics connectivity framework provides built-in capabilities to invoke rules during processing in order to make intelligent routing, validation and transformation decisions:
• Integration developers can get started quickly and easily using simple rules created using intuitive editors within the IBM Integration Bus tooling. Existing or more powerful rules may also be imported from IBM Operational Decision Manager tooling.
• Rules are packaged and deployed alongside the integration logic and executed in the same runtime container, minimizing the overhead associated with rule invocation.
• Business users have visibility of rules and are able to govern and change the business logic without requiring rework or redeployment of the integration logic.
• IBM Decision Center may be used to manage rules running within IBM Integration Bus as part of a broader Decision Manager solution.
Traffic Shaping The Prolifics Connectivity Framework provides new capabilities that allow operational awareness and control over processing traffic:
• A policy-based approach to controlling the processing rate for integration flows. Policies are defined at design time and can be updated operationally.
• Individual policies define thresholds (in messages per second) along with actions to be triggered in order to maintain a desired processing rate. For example, the breaching of a threshold can be configured to trigger subsequent workload to be delayed or rejected in order to protect downstream systems.
Mobile-‐ize the Enterprise The Prolifics connectivity framework simplifies and accelerates access to enterprise applications, systems and data by mobile devices, while maintaining appropriate business controls:
• Out-of-the-box patterns for mobile scenarios provide rapid time-to-value. IBM Integration Bus creates the plug points in the Worklight Developer environment for easy use in all your HTML5, iOS, and Android applications
• Quickly build mobile apps in as few as two-clicks • Built-in caching and security capabilities enable scalable, controlled access to
backend services resulting in improved response times, reduced load on backend applications and the protection of valuable business data
• Notify mobile applications of events within the enterprise so mobile users are informed and ready to react
Integration Services for BPM The Prolifics connectivity framework simplifies and accelerates the creation of integration services in support of a BPM solution:
• A prebuilt development pattern allows integration developers to rapidly build a new integration service to the exact specification supplied by a process designer. Alternatively, existing integration logic can be easily encapsulated as an integration service for reuse by BPM.
• IBM BPM tooling allows process designers to discover an integration service implementation, select from the available operations, automatically map the input and output elements and perform testing from within the BPM development environment.
Integration for IBM MessageSight The Prolifics connectivity framework integrates with the IBM MessageSight appliance to enable and manage extremely high volume client access to enterprise applications, systems and data:
• Patterns simplify development for common scenarios; for example, an “Event Discriminator” pattern narrows down all events to insert a smaller number of events into backend systems
• Embedded caching in IIB ensures that the number of requests routed to backend systems are minimized
• Traffic shaping capabilities ensure that the increased workload can be managed and controlled; processing rates stay within specified parameters
Prolifics Connectivity Framework Support for the Hybrid Cloud Solution The Prolifics connectivity framework offers capabilities within a flexible solution that can be provisioned across a range of physical and cloud-based environments. Stable and tested configurations are available for use with IBM Workload Deployer and IBM PureApplication System; and should your integration requirements develop or change, you have the freedom to non-disruptively transition between these options irrespective of the initial selection.

Prolifics recognizes that Test Automation must cover a broader range of the development lifecycle. This starts with a Shift Left approach, with a review of the architectural and business requirements for the systems under test. By analyzing the systems earlier in the development cycle, test case generation can occur earlier, potentially identifying defects before they are even coded by uncovering the architectural flaws that would cause them. Next in the development lifecycle is the introduction of Service Virtualization. Without access to the participating systems under test, Test Automation can still be used to test simulated versions of the system’s interfaces in order to identify potential defects in the defined APIs, processing of the data, and other types of defects that might only have been identified later on in production using traditional testing methodologies.
