MHE Sector Overview

Project Reporter • 29 • January 15, 2018

inputs about the requirement of human resource, time, quality levels and process flow. Material handling process can reap benefit of simulation and avoid wastages all together with complete control about the movement of goods across the entire supply chain.

MARKET SIZEAs per Global Market Insights, the Material Handling

Equipment Market size was over USD 110 billion in 2015; industry growth is pegged at over 5% CAGR estimation from 2016 to 2024. Due to proactive government policies and tilt towards boosting manufacturing sector on a larger scale, the material handling equipment sector in India expect significant gains from 2016 to 2024.

ESSENTIALS OF A GOOD MH SYSTEM• Efficient and safe transfer of goods to the desired location• Movement of goods in time based on the requirement.• Cost effective supply of materials.• Optimum use of the storage space.

NEED FOR MHECentral Electricity Authority has predicted in one of its report

that the use of material handling equipment (MHE) is spread across various verticals. In whatever industry you may be, at some point of time or the other you may need to move goods from one place to another. In such cases, you will need to use one of the various types of material handling equipment/system that are available to move goods from one point to another.

One of the most basic types of material handling equipment is the hand truck. This is a simple platform on wheels with a sturdy back to it that lets you move several boxes at once. By tilting the hand truck, the leverage allows the weight to be distributed down into the platform instead, saving your back.

These are most likely to be used in small offices for small moving jobs, in grocery stores, post offices, retail units, or anywhere else where boxes must be moved on a regular basis. For moving heavy or volume loads mainly required in larger industrial settings, forklifts are mainly used. These are mechanical trucks that you can sit in and drive like a car, and have a far greater lifting capacity. A pallet is another example of the types of material handling equipment, which is a more basic version of some of the forklift models. This could also be used to handle heavy packages, equipment, or other materials. Conveyors are being used to move goods from one place to other without putting hard efforts. It is completely automatic machine which handles all moving activities.

CHOOSING THE BEST SUITED MHEDue to availability of multiple options, choosing the best suited

MHE is not that easy. There’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all in business. When deciding what material handling equipment to use, it is important to take into account the general characteristics of the equipment types available in the market. Then, the decision maker should determine which equipment matches better to the required application. The material handling cost includes the cost of owning and maintaining the equipment as well as the cost of operating the system. The selection of MHE typically involves the following components:

• Identifying different types of equipment availableGo through the list of major types of equipment available in the

market. The MHE may come in various forms apart from standard forklift such as counterbalanced trucks, reach trucks, order pickers, tow tractors, swing reach trucks, walkie stackers, pallet trucks, or even hand pallet trucks.

The requirement for trucks is 930 and 235 units per million people per year in Germany and China, respectively. In India, the number of truck per million people per year is less than 10. So, compared to global markets, the Indian market is very small. However, the trend of using safe and reliable products that are highly efficient, coupled with the need of companies to build larger and higher warehouse, we see a tremendous potential for growth

in this market. On an average, the market is expected to have a sustainable growth of 10-12 per cent year-on-year.

Manojit Acharya, Managing Director,

Jungheinrich Lift Truck India Pvt Ltd

The Material Handling industry has immense growth potential across various applications. Increasing popularity of vertical stacking, thrust on palletisation, along with the growing need for Safe, Reliable and Productive equipment are the driving factors for demand. Faster and Safer solutions will have to be adopted in terms of equipment if we are to replicate the global best practices in India.

Jasmeet Singh,Head-Corporate

Communications andExternal Relations,

JCB India Ltd

Indian Material Handling Industry is going through tough challenges due to poor infrastructure, real-estate growth across India for last 3 years. Delayed project clearances related to mining, environmental put the most of the upcoming projects on hold in addition to that tight cash flows in the market totally slow down the industry growth. However for the last one year of new government initiatives there is optimism across about industry revival we are expecting moderate 10-15 % CAGR in the bulk material industry in coming future.

MHE Sector Overview

Project Reporter • 30 • January 15, 2018

• Consulting with experts for professional adviceTo make an informed decision on selecting the best suited

MHE, it would be apt to consult the MHE experts and rely on their recommendations.

The demand for material handling equipment and systems comes from sectors like Construction, Manufacturing, Retail, Coal, Cement, Iron and Steel, Automobile, Roads/Highways, Ports and Shipping, Engineering, Oil, Petrochemical, Fertilizer, Electricals and Cables, Chemicals, Printing, Pharma, F&B and FMCG. The growth of these sectors has a direct impact on the material handling sector.

MANUFACTURING HUBMake in India is an initiative launched by the Government of

India to encourage national, as well as multinational companies to manufacture their products in India. It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 September 2014. India is slowing emerging as a global manufacturing hub for compact cars. The advantage of low manufacturing and sourcing cost, reasonable R&D cost and growing affordability at the buyer’s end ultimately drives the growth of automobile sector, which in turn is driving domestic demand for Warehousing and Material Handling Solutions. In 2014, the compact car segment accounted for 45 percent of Indian auto market sales. Recent reports indicate double digit growth posted by most of the automotive sector players during the month of November 2017.

ELECTRIC VEHICLESPublic transport based on electricity is gaining ground in India.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has recently flagged off a fleet of first batch of 1000 E-rickshaws from Huda City Centre metro station in Gurugram, Haryana. The Government of India has also announced its intention to allow manufacturing of only electric vehicles by 2030. All this calls for a rising demand for automated material handling solutions for the automotive sector.

E-COMMERCE FUELS DEMANDThe growth of ecommerce in India at an unprecedented levels

is further fueling the need for warehouses and thereby the demand for the material handling equipment. One such example of how things would move in favour of increased demand for material handling equipment, recently an Ecommerce furniture company, Pepperfry has decided to build India’s largest state-of-the-art Warehouse at Bhiwandi in Maharashtra. Instead of having number of warehouses across the country, Pepperfry has decided to have centralised warehouse operation and deploy large material handling equipment. This ultimately would lead to saving cost of operations improving profitability in times of growing competitiveness online.

IMPROVEMENT IN BUSINESS CLIMATEThe Government of India is taking proactive steps to put the

economy in top gear and initiating reforms simultaneous across varied sectors of the economy. India inched from 142nd to 100th rank in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business index in the last three years. The Government of India has made it clear that required steps will be taken to get the country into list of Global 50 countries with regard to ease of doing business. As the business environment improves it’s likely to have a cascading effect on the material handling sector. The overall economic impact would ultimately lead to Cost competitiveness among the various MH players, increase

The government is focussing on infrastructure development, SMART cities etc. All this is good news for the Cement and MHE industry. Power is another growing segment with a lot of emphasis on Wind and Solar energy. NTN caters to all these segments so we see good opportunity in the coming years. The company is looking at 4 areas of sustainable growth. From products for Electric vehicles & renewable energy

to robotics, services and solutions, NTN is looking at products for the future with an emphasis on becoming a truly global company.

Ramnath Shenoy, Executive Director, NTN

Bearing India Pvt Ltd

Palletisation is a major factor that will drive the growth of material handling equipment in warehousing. Many large companies looking at making their supply chain more productive and efficient will look at how they can handle loads effectively. When loads are palletised, the backward and forward linkages also need to be palletised if the system is to be efficient. This will put increase focus on palletisation

and utilisation of heights etc which will again enhance the demand for handling equipment. Growth in manufacturing and trade will really push the absorption of material handling equipment.“Make in India” will be a real boost to manufacturing sector which will benefit our industry of material handling.

Cavas Dumasia, Vice President - Marketing & Sales, Godrej

Material Handling

With the government’s thrust on the Port sector, with initiatives such as the Sagarmala project, our market size is expected to increase. However, the market for the Thermal power sector is expected to shrink with government’s thrust on renewable energy. Steel sector is in the revival phase and expected to offer substantial business opportunities in the near future. thyssenkrupp enjoys a significant market share in material handling industry and is poised to cater to different requirements of the industry.

What can be the market size of bulk material handling equipment/systems industry in India? What’s your market share?

Current Material Handling market in India is really

unpredictable, Ambiguous, Uncertain not able to define clear strategies to meet day to day uncertain challenges.

However for the last one year of new government initiatives there is optimism across about industry revival- we are expecting moderate 10-15 % CAGR in the bulk material industry in coming future.

Material handling sector is back bone for infrastructure growth. In next FY we expect major business opportunities going to emerge in this segment which will last at least for next 3-4 years minimum but we are realistic in our optimism and expected to do good business and going to achieve at least Rs 200 crore turn over by focusing more on medium range material handling projects.

Could you comment on the impact of GST on the business at large?

Bulk industry is still scrambling with the others and the performance is been negligible. The industry having favorable demographic and geographic position as an advantage, it has not been able to capitalize when compared to other industries. A complex tax structure, inadequate infrastructure, and bureaucracy diminishing its capability to perform well on a global scale engulf various sectors in India. As per the sources, the manufacturing industry in India has been close to stagnant.

However, the manufacturing sector might be revived under the focused efforts of government and by implementation. For India, becoming a manufacturing hub will need various strategic reformations to simplify the existing system in the country. One of the much-publicized proposed reform “make in India” scheme initiative taken by the government is aligning with the implementation of the GST.

Material handling in any country is a major economic driver for the developing economies across the globe. For India, it is no less.

Going forward, where do you see Bevcon Wayors in the next five years?

Bevcon has been an influential entity for more than two decade in conventional material handling domain and now it’s time to ‘challenge the consistency and current status quo’ and move to the bigger league of business, which is necessary for the organization to sustain in a volatile era with situations constantly changing.

Bevcon’s core strength lies in use of New Generation / Innovative Conveying systems and equipment, which caters to the present demands of the Indian material handling sector. With our highly competent technical team supported by technology partners from the US and Europe, we are in a position to create Innovative equipment by taking the industry a few notches higher for industrial growth.
