Expereinces of Bhati Khurd Village:

Literacy India had started its program in Bhati Khurd village while the village was dominated by almost like medieval time. Time was modern however modernity did not prevail that place, even it was a part of capital city Delhi. Even it was prevailed – it dominated in the superficial level. The community in this village is very closed in structure. The girl children of these communities are never allowed to go out from home. Patriarchal system within the family and community pushed the women to stay at home under close doors. While the girl child is born to a family it is expected that she will be getting married very soon and will be sent to in- laws house. The girl children ‐within the family are not allowed to go to school also. Apart from that, families used to organize marriage to girl children in the age between 7yrs to 15 yrs. The Women are never allowed to go out even for recreation, movie show etc. They never participate in the process of family decision making. The only involvement of women within the family is in house work and reproduction of children. The concept to educate children and to provide economic empowerment is totally alien to the community.

In that Social Milieu, Literacy India started its journey in this village. At that time Literacy India has faced lot of trouble. The community could not trust on Education would ultimately provides a mileage to the children, youth and women. Male groups were really resistant, women are little bit confused- they felt education might lead a ‐change but they cannot support wholeheartedly as they had to bear physical torture and violence.

Literacy India then started meeting, discussion round, field visit in a regular basis in the village. Staff started talking with male members of the family. They were resistant but at the same time they are ready to listen. Staff identified two or three male persons from community and started interacting with them regularly with the intention that they would do mobilize community for Education for girl children. There were two basic areas that community was convinced such as- I) Education leads to provide an extra gain ‐to girl child that would help to find out good groom 2) Education and training could make the women and children substantive, well equipped to earn that would enhance the family income. Apart from that, male folk had the feeling that they do not have to

let the children go out of the village. It was that perspectives the program started to work at this village.
