Project results of the summer camp: Learning from the Past for Peace & Sustainability
During the summer camp 2017, 31 participants from Serbia, Russia, Belarus,
Kurdistan/Turkey, Malawi and Germany spent three days divided into three
groups dealing with issues of social and tolerance, education and
sustainability. On the third day they developed their own ideas, which they
wanted to implement at home after the camp. A large part of the projects have
already been realized. Have a look what happened!
After the presentation of the results, you can find some inside-thoughts and
our 1x1 of project-management.

Social & Tolerance
Grodno/Belarus
Intercultural student meeting
It has been more 2 months since our
Summercamp at Steyerberg. Time
really flies! The Camp gave me an
amazing possibility to meet so many
wonderful and intelligent people from
different countries, about which I had
known not much. Cultural meetings,
various activities, helping each other -
having got acquainted with unique
cultures of these people I had a huge
inspiration and improved my
communication skills ;that was very
important. I saw how much work we
are to do and directions to go in here,
in Belarus. I was part of Social
society/tolerance group, and the aim of
the project we developed was on the
one hand, to make life and study of
international students in Belarus better
and more comfortable.
On the other hand, to put Belarussian
students in touch with them - in one
word, to promote intercultural ex-
change. ESN (our local student organi-
zation in Grodno, which deals with
international students and helps them
to accustom in new surroundings)
helped us to realize this project. We
called it ''Welcome party '', and it was
exciting and fun.
There were students from India,
Bangladesh , Sri Lanka, China,
Germany, France, Azerbaijan, Côte
d'Ivoire, Iran and Belarus, of course).
We tried to create a cozy, friendly
atmosphere through dances ,games,
singing, chatting and interviewing each
other - and i think we managed to do it
. We had been just strangers for each
other. But we met at this party - and we
became as one. Hope we have made
the world a little better and some of
students have made real friends.

Women-Rights
The situation of women is still difficult in Turkey. The government is gradually reversing the women's rights gained. We want to use this project to inform women about their rights, especially young women intending to marry soon. We want to educate them about their rights so they can make clear to their spouse, before their marriage, what their rights are. We wanted to conduct these workshops in cooperation with women's rights groups in Diyarbakir. Most of them were closed after the attempted coup. Therefore, it was not easy to find cooperation partners. But we found a lawyer who helped us. The first workshop took place and we will continue. I am a student of law and for me it was a great experience. I will continue this kind of projects.
Hannover/Germany
Integration of refugees We started to invite young refugees
into our organization and discussed
different ideas what to do together. A
lot happened afterwards.
Every Monday we do have an open
evening to meet, talk, to play games
together. In October we went together
to the football-stadium and into a
“Escape Room”. Once a month we are
cooking together, afterwards we are
watching a movie. That way we got to
know already movies from the Middle
East.
In January we spent together one
weekend in the mountains, went Ice-
Skating together.

Puppet Theater about Non-
Violent Communication /
Tolerance
We bought puppets with the budget and we will also use them for further projects. Every puppet we bought represents a different character, and the main one is a bear, which always like to be in the center of attention. He doesn't like when someone doesn't agree with him. On the other side he is pure hearten. Also there is a rabbit, who is always criticizing the bear, the owl likes the bear in the beginning, the cat is like a teacher, who is ignoring when kids are fighting. The elephant was new in the classroom and got discriminated because he comes from a different environment. Kids were invited to join and to act any character besides the bear to find the solution for the problem performed in the play. It was important, that the kids where participating actively. It was the method of forum-theater. The participants liked it very much. They were competing which one will be the next performing, in good meaning of course. The first participating group was already experienced because they are members of the drama club of their school, so they were really interested
and open for performing and
communication. We will continue going
our schools with this program.

Diyarbakir/Kurdistan
Independent Academy Dilan Kanay and I participated in the
youth exchange program -Summer
Camp, held in Germany on 4-16
August in 2017 on behalf of Youth and
Change Association Diyarbakır Turkey.
During the Camp, we had the
opportunity to visit a Free School. As a
result of this visit, we came up with the
idea of implementing a small example
of a Free School in our local
community.
Indeed we planned to prepare an
English course for a month (20
lessons). In Germany we planned the
methodology and schedule.
In Diyarbakır, we started our first
lesson on the 20th of September 2017
and finished the last one on the 26th of
October 2017 in total we lectured 20
lessons. Our students’ English level
was A 2. Participation into the lessons
were based on volunteering for
students and the teachers and
everything was planned according to
the student`sdemand. That was the
innovative way. For example up to the
interests of the participants we played
a lot of roleplays during the lectors. A
part of it was to evaluate with the
participants the lessons and to improve
them step by step.
11 students were chosen among the
volunteers of the association.
Introducing oneself and being able to
speak in English about a movie was
the target of our project.

volunteers of our association.
Minsk/Belarus
During the summer-camp in Germany
we got to know a lot of methods of
non-formal education. We understood
how good it is to create the learning in
a funny and interactive way.
We got to know this old chinse phrase:
What you see, you can perhaps
keep in mind
What you see and hear, you usually
keep in mind
What you say, you probably keep
in mind
What you do, you understand
We got to know also the methods of
JANUN connected to the important
issue of climate change. We also
started to run this kind of workshops in
schools. For us as students who will
become later on teacher it is a great
experience.
“Our” pupils experienced for example
what ways of transportation are more
or less environmental friendly and how
far you can get if you go by train, bus,
car or airplane and you can just use
one Gramm of CO2 !
Working Group
Sustainability and
Environmental
Protection
While different projects were
developed in the other two groups, the
sustainability group decided on a
common method: Puppet-Theater.
However, the individual groups have
each developed their own focus, to
which they then each have developed
a piece.
Kragujevac/Serbia
"Eco Puppet Show"
got created during the international
exchange-program and aims to
present in a creative and interesting
way the attitude of the vast majority of
our population towards the environ-
ment. The play is so designed that
from the beginning to the end actors
create a problem, define it, solve and
send a strong message to the viewers,
the children.
In addition to the formal education and
environmental education that children
have in schools, we believe that it is
extremely important that ecological
problems - solutions are presented in
an informal manner. So the idea is, to
include fun, the raising of awareness
and to send a message to the young
people. We performed the first Eco
Puppet show in front of our dear
friends from "SOŠO Vukašin
Marković", a school for pupils with
special needs.
We did the performance so far in two schools for two groups. We are planning to do more and to make the story even more complex. Also new volunteers have new ideas.
Our next step is to continue this activity (with new volunteers) who just came to our organization. So they will continue this project cuz it is a really nice activity and not so many people did something like this in Serbia in general, really good! :)
Change life – not the climate The Serbian participants also got to know this method during the camp and took it home. Change life – not the climate. This workshop we conducted at university in the faculty of ecology and in a secondary school. The workshop with the boxes who illustrate the impact of different food-stuff on the climate, is interesting for us and also for many students.
We also added a bit more in this workshop (to update it) and discussed about food and how much the industrial way of the producing actually creates more problems than for example organic farming. We explained what permaculture is, what is a mono-culture and why it is not
good to have the agriculture based on monocultures etc.
In all projects, we add different activities so we enjoyed it a lot and our students as well.
Joschkar Ola / Russia
Puppet Theatre for Ecology
Aim of the project
The aim of the project is to raise
awareness about gestures that people
can do in their every-day lives in order
to protect the nature and maintain their
environment clean. We believe that
each person is responsible and has a
role to play in the safeguard of their
environment. However, because of
history and the political system, the
situation in Yoshkar-Ola is such that
most people do not take responsibility
for this. On the contrary, they reject it
onto the system, the politicians or the
administration of the city, and criticize
them for their apparent inaction. Our
goal is to bring the citizens to realize
that they can be the own actors of
change in their environment. Our main
target group is young children, for they
are not yet formatted by the thought
system of the older generations but
they repeat the gestures of their
models. By showing them the right
gestures, they can then influence their
families and friends, and create a new
generation of citizens more
responsible.
Activities
We want to create the puppets and
write short scenarios inspired by the
everyday life of the children and their
urban environment. Then, we want to
show the scenes in different schools of
the city/Republic. The scenes will be
interactive: the young audience can tell
the puppets what to do to better the
situation. If the children cannot find the
answers, the actors will help them in
their decision. The performance shall
be followed by a small discussion to
analyze what they have learned, and
also for the actors to understand how
the make the show more interesting
and efficient.
We also intend to film some of the best
performances, so that they can be
uploaded on social media and spread
to a bigger number of persons.
Material
We intend to create puppets and
decorations entirely with recycled
materials, found in the garbage of the
city, so that we can demonstrate that
garbage can be reused (which is one
of the messages that we want to
convey).
Calendar
• November-December 2017:
constitution of the group of
actors and volunteers: writing of
the scenarios and creation of
the decoration and puppets;
contact with schools;
• January-March 2018:
performances in the schools
• April 2018: second contact with
the schools (questionnaires);
final evaluation of the activities
Hannover & Malawi
Part of the German group during the
camp was also Joseph Kenson Sakala
from Malawi, who is doing a voluntary
service through “Brot für die Welt” for
one year at JANUN e.V. in Hannover.
Together with him, the German
participants from the sustainability
group developed the idea for a tree
planting campaign, which is to be
realized in Malawi. The point is that as
many children as possible plant a tree
in Malawi. So that they also
understand what the trees are
important for, a puppet theater play is
currently being developed, which
should then be performed before the
planting of the trees. As part of the
summer camp, a project group has
been formed, which takes care of the
finished development of the piece, the
dolls and donations, so that this project
can be realized from August 2018,
when Joseph returns to Malawi after
his year at JANUN.

Puppet- Theater “First steps for
nature”
The goal of the project is to teach basic
knowledge about a more ecological
lifestyle and what everybody can do in
daily life threw puppet- theatre.
The idea is to show the performance in
kindergartens, elementary-schools and
children activity places for groups of
20-30 children, in the age from 5 - 7
years old with the following main goals:
Understanding that every
human step on the Earth can be
dangerous for some alive
organism;
we as human beings are strong,
but we are only part of nature
and we can’t live without nature
everybody can do something, to
protect the nature
The scenario is nearly done. We had some help from a professional puppet-theater-performancer, who is now part of this project. Now we are looking for some funding, because we are looking forward to a bigger project and to visit a lot of institutions, that for we cannot just do this project voluntarily. The Swedish Embassy got interested in funding this project. Now we are waiting for the answer. These wonderful drawings are giving an
idea how the puppets will look like.
They will be done in a professional way.
The project in short
From 4 to 16 August 2017, 30 active
young volunteers from Turkey,
Belarus, Serbia, Russia and Germany
met in Steyerberg, Lower Saxony, and
finally in Hannover. After studying the
exploitation of forced laborers in the
Nazi armaments industry, they got
acquainted with a community project
devoted to social, cultural and
environmental issues established in
the old buildings of a forced labor
camp. On the basis of the discussion
on the history of the Nazis and the
experienced community project, the
participants divided into three thematic
groups.
Each group was dealing with an
important issue, which also plays a role
in the visited community project. The
topics where: education,
environmentally friendly lifestyle and
social coexistence & tolerance. The
participants exchanged ideas and
experiences regarding these topics,
developed common ideas and
positions, and completed a small
Project-concept.
Most of them were realized in their own
country following the exchange. The
projects implemented got documented
in order to sensitize and motivate
others for the themes, ideas and
methods themselves to hopefully
become active.
In particular, the following
two findings were important
to the participants:
"It is not normal that young people
from five different countries are able
to meet, to live together and to work
together for a better world, getting
to know each other and becoming
friends."
This insight came to the participants in
particular during the visit to the former
Nazi weapons factory, where
thousands of forced laborers, including
from the former Soviet Union and
Serbia, were enslaved to produce
ammunition, with which people for
example in the Soviet Union and
Serbia were also murdered. Not far
away from this place, we, 30 young
people from Russia, Belarus, Serbia,
Turkey, Germany and also our guest
from Malawi, have spent days together
to engage in a more peaceful, tolerant
and environmentally friendly world.
"We are responsible for making the
world a better place and this is
possible"
72 years ago, the great-grandfathers of
the German participants were at war
with Serbia, the Soviet Union. 72 years
ago, ammunition was still being
produced in the gigantic Nazi factory to
kill "enemies." Now we as great-
grandchildren are becoming friends.
From a part of the forced labor
camp, the Lebensgarten has
become a life project in which
people try to live in harmony with
each other and with nature.
http://lebensgarten.de/
The knowledge of the participants
from these experiences:
A Change is possible.
Nothing has to stay like it is.
You can be the change – you need to
be the change!
This realization and the exchange
about it among participants was very
motivating and inspiring for all of us.
Many people, especially in Turkey,
Russia, Belarus and also Serbia are
demotivated and disillusioned by life,
without hope that something can
change for the better. Therefore, it was
a strong desire of the participants to
give others courage and to spread
confidence.
The participants also wanted to share
with others the project ideas that they
themselves had developed (which they
were very proud of) and the reports on
the projects realized by the
participants.
From the workshop contents and the
experiences made it was the wish of
the participants to produce and publish
a short handout, which as includes a 1
x 1 of project-management skills to
give a guidance and assistance in a
very short time. This handout is
included in this documentation. And it
comes now!
How to organize a
project?
The workshop started with the following
question:
Who of you organized already a
project?
Most participants did not.
Some participants where not sure if they
organized already one.
What exactly is a project was a question.
The second question was:
Who of you organized already a
birthday-party?
Everybody did.
Feedback by the workshop-leader
O.K. I see, everybody of you organized
already a project.
Because, a birthday-party is also a project!
Let´s brainstorm: What is important if
you want to organize a birthday-party?
Collection – what do you need?
A place for the party
Food and drinks / money
The day
Guests
An Invitation
Music
Motto?
Support by people who are willing to help you
Informing neighbors (if it is going to be loud)
Knowing about the Laws and rules
Next step was to bring the collection in a
time-line, what comes first, what comes
next while planning your party?
Finally we decided the following order
1. Guests
2. Motto
3. Laws and Rules
4. Place
5. Time
6. Informing neighbors
7. Support by people
8. Food and Drinks / Money
9. Music
10. Invitation
Why this order?
Guests: What guests would I like to invite
to my party? How many guests do I
expect?
Motto: What kind of party my guests
would enjoy? What kind of party I would
enjoy?
Laws and Rules: Is it allowed for my
guests to drink alcohol, does the time of
the party fit to the age of my guests? Can
we play loud music at night without
disturbing neighbors?
Place: What place fits to the motto and the
number of people that I would like to invite.
Do I have to pay for the place and if so, do
I have the money for it? Who could be
disturbed during my party? Is the location
easily to reach by my guests? Are any
rules connected to the place and are they
important for the party?
Time: What time fits to my guests? What
day and also the time of the day? Does
something else happen that day that could
be a kind of concurrence to my party.
Informing the neighbors: Probably it will
be loud and could disturb neighbors. Not
much disturbs a party more than an angry
neighbor who comes over. Inform your
neighbors in time and ask for their
understanding and tolerance. Give them a
mobile-number to call you in any case, or
even better, invite them to your party.
Support by people: You can´t do
everything just on your own. At least if you
try to do everything on your own during
your party, you will not enjoy your own
party because of being too busy. Ask
friends, family members to help, give them
specific tasks they feel good with (DJ,
Barkeeper, Taking care of dishes …)
Food & Drinks or Money
Do I have the money to buy drinks and
food? Will I prepare the food by myself or
will I ask the participants to bring food and
drinks? Do I want to have alcohol on my
party? What food and drinks do fit to my
guests, their expectations or the motto of
my party?
Music
Do I need music on my party? If so what
kind of music? Do I want the people to
dance? Shall they just meet and talk –
what music would be the best for this
reason? Do I have the music and the
needed technic for that?
Invitation & Timing
How do I want to invite your guests, by
calling them, sending an email or an
invitation by regular post? Do you expect
an answer of them and if so, until what
day?
What is the best timing to invite them,
short in before or longer time in advance?
If you expect guests from far away they
should know it long before.
What information do your guests need to
have in before? Should they bring
something along?
What kind of expectations and emotions
do I want to transport through my
invitation?
All this steps you can also transfer to
most other projects.
Try it out!

ERASMUS+ PROGRAMME:
Giving a chance to young people
and youth workers for an
international experience
Erasmus + is the EU‘s new programme
for boosting skills and employability
through education, training, youth, and
sport. Between 2014-2020 the
programme will provide opportunities
for over 4 million Europeans to study,
to participate in youth-exchanges, to
gain work experience and to volunteer
abroad.
What does it involve?
Funding for youth activities under
Erasmus+ aims to improve the key
competences, skills and employability
of young people, promote young
people‘s social inclusion and well-
being, and foster improvements in
youth work and youth policy at local,
national and international level.
Concretely in the field of youth, the
Erasmus+ programme offers three
main opportunities:
Key Action 1:
Mobility opportunities for young people
and youth workers. Young people have
the opportunity to participate in youth-
exchanges or to volunteer for a period
up to one year in another country.
Youth workers can take part in training
and networking activities abroad or
spend some time in a youth
organisation abroad for a job
shadowing or an observation period.
Key Action 2:
Opportunities for cooperation for
innovation and exchange of good
practices. Organisations can apply for
funding to work in partnership with
organisations from other participating
countries. The projects funded under
this action will focus on sharing,
developing and transferring innovative
practices in education, training and
youth provision between participating
countries.
Key Action 3:
Opportunities to support policy reform.
The Erasmus+ programme will fund
strategic activities supporting policy
reform across the EU. Funding
opportunities in the field of youth under
this action can take the form of
meetings between young people and
decision makers.
Who can take part?
Various opportunities are available
under Erasmus+, including
opportunities for young people (aged
13-30), youth organisations, and other
stakeholders
active in the field of youth.
