GENERAL GUIDELINES

We understand that, utmost attention must be paid to the content of the thesis /dissertation/

report, which is being submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree, it is

imperative that a standard format be prescribed.

The same format shall also be followed in preparation of the final soft copy to be submitted

to the departmental library.

The Thesis / Dissertation / Project Report shall be presented in a number of chapters, starting

with Introduction and ending with Conclusions . Each of the other chapters will have a

precise title reflecting the contents of the chapter.

A chapter can be subdivided into sections, subsections and sub-subsections so as to present

the content discretely and with due emphasis.

The report shall be presented in following sequence:

1. Title sheet

2. Certificate

3. Approval sheet

4. Acknowledgement

5. Abstract

6. Table of contents

7. List of tables

8. List of figures

9. Abbreviations / Notations / Nomenclature

10. Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Background

1.2 Motivation1.3 Aim and objectives

1.4 Literature review

1.5 Problem definition

1.6 Scope of the project

11. Chapter 2: Theoretical Analysis / Design and Development / Modeling

Pages with Title sheet, Certificate, Approval sheet, Acknowledgement, Abstract, Table ofcontents, List of tables, and List of figures, Abbreviations / Notations / Nomenclature must be

according to the format provided. Soft copy of the same will be provided and it has to be

strictly followed.

CHAPTER: 1

INTRODUCTIONThe title of Chapter 1 shall be Introduction. It shall justify and highlight the problem posed,

define the topic and explain the aim and scope of the work presented in the thesis.

Information should be arranged in the following sections:

1.1 Background

1.2 Motivation

1.3 Aim and objectives1.4 Literature review:

This shall normally present a critical appraisal of the previous work published in

the literature pertaining to the topic of the investigation. The extent and emphasis

of the chapter shall depend on the nature of the investigation.

When a project has Chapter 2 as Theoretical Analysis of ………… , Chapter 3 will be

………… , Chapter 3 will be Fabrication of ………… . Similarly, when Chapter 2 is

Modeling of ………… , Ch apter 3 will be Simulation of ………… ..

CHAPTER: 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This shall form the penultimate chapter of the thesis and shall include a thorough evaluation

of the investigation carried out and bring out the contributions from the study. The discussion

shall logically lead to inferences and conclusions as well as scope for possible future work.

CHAPTER: 5

CONCLUSION Conclusions derived from the logical analysis presented in the Results and Discussions

Chapter shall be presented and clearly enumerated, each point stated separately. Scope for

future work should be stated lucidly in the last part of the chapter.

FORMATING GUIDELINES

1. Paper:

The original typescript must be typed on white 70 GSM A4 size bond papers.

2. Word Document Details:

Size: A4

Document Font: Times New Roman

Document Margins: Left, Top, Bottom 25mm and Right 15mm

Header and Footnotes Font Size: 9

Header: Right aligned

Footnote: Left aligned

Page numbers: 12, Times New Roman, Bottom, Center aligned

Document Line Spacing: 1.5Document Body Text: 12, justified

Chapter Headings Font: 14, Bold, Center aligned, Paragraph to start on new line

Section Headings: 12, Bold, Left aligned, Paragraph to start on new line

Sub-section Headings: 12, Italic, Bold, Left aligned and Paragraph to start on new line

Font Size for text in graphs and tables: 10

Table title/caption above table, Figure title/caption below figure and center aligned

A new section/sub-section that begins towards the bottom half of the page must have

at least 6-8 lines of text or at least a figure on the same page. Beginning a new section

at the bottom of the page is otherwise not acceptable. However every new chapter

must start on a new page.

Use of color: Colors are allowed for photographs and graphical information but not

for text.

Equations: Should be numbered using brackets, right justified sequentially and

indented with respect to the body of the text. They must be typed properly using

appropriate equation tools from MS-word. One line should be left blank after each

equation line.

NUMBERING SYSTEM

1. Chapters to be designated by numbers e.g. Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, …etc

2.

Sections of a chapter to be numbered using decimal- type notations e.g. 1.1, 1.2, 1.3…etc. 3. Similarly, sub sections to be numbered as 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3….etc

4. Decimal type notation to be used for numbering photographs, figures, tables, charts,

drawings, equations etc. chapter-wise e.g. Fig 1.1, Fig 1.2, Fig 1.3, Table 1.1, Table 1.2

5. Appendix to be numbered with capital Roman numerals. e.g. Appendix I, Appendix II..etc.

6. The pages carrying the Title sheet, Approval sheet, Acknowledgement will not be

numbered

7. The pages carrying the Abstract, Table of contents, List of tables, List of figures,

Abbreviations / Notations / Nomenclature to be numbered with small Roman

numerals e.g. i, ii, iii, vi, v etc.

8. The references to be designated by numbers 1,2,3,4….. etc in square brackets and to

be typed as superscript. The references to be given for each figure, photograph, table

in the report text and same to be reflected in the references sections at the end of the

report.

e.g. Fig 2.1 Plasma Arc Cutting [7] , Here in your References section, seventh reference

should be regarding the Fig 2.1.

9. Line drawing should be neat. Free hand drawings are not permitted. Hand-written

figure numbers /figure captions are not permitted.

SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES

Total no of black book hard copies required to be submitted:

No of Students in a group + One Department copy + One Internal Guide copy + One External

Guide copy.

All groups will have to attach a CD / DVD (containing soft copies of Project Report, Poster,

Final Presentation and Publications in pdf format only) with each black book hard copy.

Apart from CD/DVD, all groups (one member from each group) will have to send the soft

copies of their thesis, presentation, paper publications, posters etc in pdf format to the

following email id after necessary approvals. Email: [email protected]

Only one email will be accepted with all pdf attachments whose subject line must be in the

following format:

YYYY-YYYY(ACADEMIC YEAR) _GROUP NUMBER (NN)_TITLE OF THE PROJECT

e.g.

2012-2013_GROUP 09_DEVELOPMENT OF 3-D PLASMA ARC CUTTING SYSTEM
