Haim - Better Off

I chose to produce work for the Secret 7 competition, firstly because I have never created designs for their briefs before and secondly I enjoy listening to the music in which I created the sleeve for. Haim are a band which are current and popular for their Nu-Folk style music, so when creating an image for the sleeve I definitely had this in mind. I believe photograph is my strong point and I wanted to incorporate as much of it into the responsive module, by starting with a secret 7 brief. The aim was to produce imagery which reflected the lyrics of a song called 'Better Off', and from listening to the song I would interpret their lyrics as going from one place to the next physi-cally and emotionally. I believe I have captured the themes of travel, life, people and places in this image and it felt appropri-ate to use it for the sleeve design. The production of this image was not at all time consuming, and over all it is one of my favourite pieces of work due to it's simplicity and value.

Laura Marling - Beast

Again I chose to produce work for a Secret 7 competition, only this time it was for an artist called Laura marling and the sleeve to design was based on her song 'Beast'. I used some of my photography work in the design because at the time I felt I could portray the meaning of the song through a particular image. The sleeve I created resembles mirrored identities such as life/death, good/bad, themes like such are written in the lyrics about an entity called the beast. My aim was to pick at the subject mater of the song and attempt to represent it through imagery. I believe conceptually I have grasped the art of the song, which is important as the sleeve is supposed to reveal the substance of the tale within. However when it comes the over all design of the sleeve I wish I had produced something more illustrative, perhaps using the image as a starting point for a concept to work on. This piece wasn't time consuming nor was it rushed however I feel the general outcome of the work could of been produced to a better standard.

T-Shirt designs

Threadless is a competition brief which allows individuals to produce work which can be applied to a range of products for example t-shirts, jumpers, bags and phone cases. This type of brief is exactly what I should be and will continue to participate in more, it's an opportunity to create designs you like and are happy with to be applied to products. To complete the brief I used some illustrative work based on the band Crystal Castles, the collection of illustrations I produced are designs I am really happy with as they demonstrate my drawing abilities. The final sketch I chose to use and apply to the products was a simple crystal drawing, although I liked the portrait illustrations I just wanted to use something simple which could run across a variety of products. Doing this brief reminded me that I should illustrate a lot more and step away from the laptop at times because although the designs I produced for this brief were digital I also enjoy hand rendered work. T-shirt design is something I am eager to get into, in fact producing my own line own clothing is ambitious yet realistic given that the facilities are in college for me to do this. Perhaps a collaboration with another student is what I may consider throughout the year.

Hellfire beer label

I decided to take part in the Creative Networks brief which was to create a label for Hellfire beer. The aim was to produce a label which defined the beer, its taste and its qualities. I used the name of the beer and played with a concept which was based of the four element, fire, air, water and earth and I designed a simple vector and coloured coded label. Looking back at the design it is my least favourite work from the module, it was a quick turn around brief for me, inevitably too quick. The design was rushed and there wasn't much thought process or research that went into the design showing lack of method of production and innovation, clearly resulting in a bad piece of design. Evaluating the work now, Im sure I would change many things about the label such as a different con-cept, to draw more, to research thoroughly and to produce and transform ideas and designs until the point of where I am happy with the result.

Douwe Egberts

I decided to take on the brief set by Douwe Egberts, which was to raise awareness of the brand name and the line of products that exists or could be produced. This was an unusual one for me to do as I didn't know the first thing about coffee or the brand, so the unawareness on my behalf was a challenge. I used the tagline 'for the love of coffee' to develop my own slogan 'share love share coffee', using this I worked in the pho-tography studio capturing portrait shots of young fresh faces drinking a branded cup, the concept behind these photo-graphs was to use them as posters to create a sense of recog-nition that young individuals drink coffee too, and the tagline 'share love share coffee' is to remind people that coffee is a home comfort, and could be shared with loved ones. I designed packaging along side of the posters and used the imagery for the instant coffee boxes I made, unfortunately the designs weren't what I wanted to create as I left this brief at a bit of a dead end. I had a lot of ideas for this brief what I wanted to produce but didn't prioritise my time properly to do so. If I could, I would of developed my packaging designs a lot further and incorporated the awareness posters with the packaging instead of using them on the packaging.

Copper Beech Acoustic

Copper Beech Acoustic is a video project organised by two musicians named Emma Dockeray and Tom Salmon, they approached and asked my if I could design a logo for the video. After meeting with the pair I proposed the idea of me branding them and there project which they were pleased about and were happy for me to do. Copper Beech Acoustic is a project which will discover and reveal musical talent around the Lake District (Cumbria).I was really happy to be asked to design for clients who have an interest in music as I have a huge interest in designing music packaging. I took on the challenge by using the concept of the name 'Copper Beech Acoustic' to create a logo which I wanted it to be what it says, a mixture between a copper beech tree and the strings of an acoustic guitar. Using the logo I devel-oped a body of work which related to the video such as busi-ness cards to promote the collaborators project and cd pack-aging which could have musicians tracks on. Overall this brief has been my favourite throughout the respon-sive module, I've liked the work I have produced so far as this is an ongoing brief up until July. The opportunity to brand has been useful as it has given me a taster of what kind of branding I would like to do for myself as a designer.

Dazed & Confused

I decided to collaborate with Emily Ball for the Dazed & Con-fused brief as we both have similar interests in design and wanted to share ideas on a project. The brief was to produce one single photograph that portrays contemporary youth culture, and the image would be featured in the the Dazed & Confused magazine if it won. Although this brief seen straight forward, Emily and I made the brief our own and made it quite an ambition task to complete. We took on the brief by focusing on themes such as fashion, music, technology and social media to portray in the imagery. We also collaborated with a variety of different people such as photographers, musicians, graffiti's artists and video editors, which was a lot of fun and was beneficial for us work wise. To capture what we believed to be contemporary youth culture we organised an event called #basement which focused on the music and fashion trends which are current today and attempted to capture a an image which reflected a certain time at a certain place. The photograph produced showed fast movement, light and colour which is related to genres of music and the location were they are held, for example reggae, d'n'b and dub step nights are usually held in warehouse/basement like building and the people who attend skank/dance to the high-speed music. Inviting out peers to the event gave us opportunity to capture this in a more organised way. All in all the Dazed & Confused brief has been the biggest brief I have one, I produced a lot of work for it which I am happy with and although it was quite expensive to produce and very time consuming I think it payed off due to the final out come which included a graffiti, installation type, photography, film and a publication.

FINAL EVALUATION

Page 19: Project Repork Book

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? The responsive module has thought me that I can work collaboratively really well, the skills I have developed in doing so are being more organised, producing more work than usual and making a lot more effort in a brief as someone else is counting on my efforts. I believe my software skills have improved, such as photoshop given that I edited a lot of photography work for the briefs I chose to do. Another is my communications skills, when work-ing on the Dazed & Confused brief Emily and I had to share ideas and work separately sometimes, but good communication payed off as the final result of the work was well produced by the pair of us.

2. What approaches to/ methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?I feel I have enhanced my photography skills, and using imagery in my work has been different to the usual vector based work, this is something I would like to take further as I want to learn more in photo-shop and how to manipulate photographs to a high standard. A lot of my primary research has helped me throughout the briefs, just taking a few hours a week to go out and take photographs or gather products which will inspire me for later work has been worth while.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? When I was approached to do the logo for Copper Beech Acoustic, which I later fully branded I real-ised that branding and identity is a sector within design which I really enjoy and that I actually grasp. Doing smaller briefs such as Secret 7 and Threadless were the ones I most enjoyed as I took the photographic and illustrative approach for both, both are strengths of mine which I want to pursue further.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?Any work wish has been rushed too quickly shows lack of creativity, this was shown in the Creative Networks brief, the work I produced wasn't great nor of a decent standard. Making more effort and taking time on designs needs to be addressed more in 'quick turn around briefs'. I believe I could have done more briefs throughout the module if I'd of used my time wisely.

5. Identify 5 things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?Use my time more effectively to be able to produce a better standard of work, and work that I am more pleased with. I wish I had produced print based work as apposed to proposal work, if I had of managed my time better I might of changed my designs after printing and mocking up first. I would have looked at a wider range of briefs, although there was a lot to choose from on YCN and D&AD, unfortunately I wasn't awfully keen on the many of then, I should have broadened my ideas by looking at different briefs, and this may of resulted in me producing more satisfactory work. Perhaps exploring more with illustration would of been good as it is what I like to do most, for exam-ple in the Secret 7 briefs, this is something i will con-sider next time. When collecting secondary research I should look at a wider range of websites, as exploring through design work can seem a little repetitive, I will also use library more to look for inspiration designers and artists.
