A. FINAL PUBLISHABLE SUMMARY REPORT
1) IMPACT Executive Summary
IMPACT‘s aim has been the rapid deployment across Europe of FIWARE Technologies related with Internet Mobile
Content in specific FI-CONTENT areas. For the startups selected to be part of the IMPACT Accelerator Program, IMPACT
facilitated access to markets and Corporations and investors on a worldwide basis.
IMPACT had done the following activities in a 3-step process:
(1) an important promotion of FIWARE Technology related with mobile technologies in Media Contents and
coordination with other FI-PPP projects and stakeholders was done in the past two years and a half; (2) 3 Open Calls to
attract a wide range of start-ups (web-entrepreneurs and innovative SMEs) that demonstrated a commitment to the use of
the promoted enablers were implemented to select 63 startups and (3) Three Support Programs for these start-ups were
implemented. These programs consisted of:
(i) a 6-month acceleration program based on the existing initiatives, currently managed by IMPACT’s partners in
association with a renowned Mentors & Investors Community;
(ii) an Extended Investment Phase, beyond the EC funding support, where the consortium selected more mature startups
and provided direct contacts with investors and business angels. To this end, the IMPACT consortium has organized three
demo days, two digital missions to UK and Silicon Valley, two roadshows and several 1to1 investor meetings to further
help startups in the program to achieve private and public funding. Moreover, IMPACT has implemented a fourth
restricted open call, to select 11 startups to access a two-month intensive program called IMPACT extension program.
IMPACT consortium is composed of: (1) DOCOMO Digital, a world class Global Corporation in the mobile commerce
ecosystem with its own acceleration program; (2) ISDI the world´s first “internet only” business school providing an internet
business master’s degree integrated with a full start-up support ecosystem (incubation, acceleration & venturing); (3) the
Super Angel Investor, Michael Kleindl, one of Europe’s most renowned public figures in the Internet advertising sector;
(4) Teknologiudvikling (TU), a consultancy firm specialized in funding will provide valuable expertise in the management
& monitoring of public funding Open Calls through on-line processes.

2) IMPACT general overview of the project | accelerator program
2.1 IMPACT Total Budget
As one of the Sixteen Accelerators (A16) financed under the Seventh Framework Program, IMPACT contributed to the
goals of the Future Internet Public-Private Partnership umbrella FI-PPP Phase 3 Call by facilitating the promotion and early
adoption of FIWARE Technology (FIWARE and FI-CONTENT) focusing on mobile technologies. IMPACT aimed to
accelerate the development and adoption of Future Internet technologies in Europe, advance the European market for
smart infrastructures and increase the effectiveness of business processes through the Internet. For that purpose, the
consortium had received €7.800.000, of which more than €6.200.000 were distributed to European SMEs operating in the
area of MOBILE INTERNET as well as access to an innovative acceleration program that through training and mentorship
contributed to bring the subgrantees to the next level, along with ensuring a meaningful collaboration with other FI-PPP
initiatives.
2.2 IMPACT Portfolio of subgrantees
During the 30 months of the project’s duration, IMPACT implemented three Open Calls in order to select 60 start-ups,
and web-entrepreneurs, to be part of the IMPACT Support and Acceleration Programs. Based on the standard
processes of the partners whilst remaining compliant with the general requirements of the FI-PPP call (specifically Special
Clause 42), an on-line Open Calls Management Tool was set up to automatically process all the proposals.
Regarding the final number of start-ups on-board, IMPACT prioritized quality over quantity, selecting 60 startups
instead of 64. These projects were convincing in terms of business idea/technology and team strength to the IMPACT
Steering Committee. Each of these companies was selected to receive a grant of 100.000€ equity free (90.000€ in
FIWARE grant + 10.000€ in vouchers services) that was distributed in three phases in accordance with the achievement
of the deliverables proposed during the acceleration program. This method ensured efficiency and effectiveness in the
use of EC funds. In this sense, 9 startups have been left out of IMPACT acceleration program, since they did not achieve
the milestones and /or delivered correctly the deliverables fixed at the beginning of the acceleration program.

2.3 IMPACT Extension program
As a result of the success of the three acceleration programs and due to a surplus of funds, IMPACT Consortium organized a Fourth Acceleration Program with the objective to
further accelerate 11 startups in a condensed, powerful course of acceleration called the IMPACT Extension Program that took place from September 2016 to December 2016.
The goal of the IMPACT Extension Program was to accelerate the best performers of IMPACT program but also invite and include the fifteen startups selected to participate in
FIWARE VIP programme (15 out of 979 startups), that had already been accelerated in some of the sixteen FIWARE accelerators, to promote the sustainability of the FIWARE
community as well as the synergies between the FI-PPP projects.
Of the 11 ultimately chosen for the program, 8 startups had previously participated in IMPACT, while 3 were from one of the sixteen FIWARE accelerators. These startups
would be focusing on internationalization and expansion through marketing, activities which we would support and guide. Moreover, the startups selected for this program received
€50.000 equity free with a total budget of 550.000€ in grants and 170.000€ allocated to provision of premium acceleration services. Three new startups from three different European
countries and from three FIWARE accelerators were incorporated to IMPACT Portfolio.

3) Key Support Activities: IMPACT Acceleration Services
IMPACT planned to organize 3 acceleration waves, or batches, in a two-year period. Finally, we ended up organizing 4
batches, which took place during the following dates:
● 1st Acceleration Program: Feb 15 – Jul 15
● 2nd Acceleration Program: Sep 15 – Feb 16
● 3rd Acceleration Program: Jan 16 – Jun 16
● New: Extension Acceleration Program: Sept 16 – Dec 16
Work performed
IMPACT´s main objective is to become one of the most important and well recognized business accelerators within Europe. To reach this goal, IMPACT has planned a thorough and highly demanding Acceleration Program, usefully designed for the startups selected, to expand, and internationalize the usage of FIWARE. The acceleration program, consistis in a suite of services, including: Training, Mentoring and complementary funding opportunities.
3.3.1 Welcome event
The IMPACT Training Welcome Day (the opening of the IMPACT Training / Welcome Week) is the kick off the acceleration
program. The startups, IMPACT Team, and mentors (the community of #IMPACTers) met and shared their expectations.
3.3.2 Training
The training is divided into two packages: 50h of Face to Face training and at least 100h of Online training3.
- Face to Face training
An intensive and high quality eight-day program of took place at ISDI’s offices in Barcelona or Madrid.
- Online training
Online courses focusin on important topics related to digital and mobile startups.
3.3.3 Mentoring
There are two different mentorships offered to IMPACT’s beneficiaries; thus, startups learn from two different mentors, Follow Up Mentors (FuM) and Specialized Mentors (SM), two complementary profiles engaged in the process of
fostering the growth of the startups. FuM are also the ones pointing the startups towards the proper SM according to their strategic needs.
During this period, mentorship services were provided in key areas in order to help startups enhance their value. The Follow Up Mentors guide the startups’ founders, helping them identify their needs to meet objectives, a necessary condition to be able to receive funding.
3.3.4 Support in complementary funding opportunities
Beyond the public funding delivered to the beneficiaries, the IMPACT consortium designed and executed a complete set of services to better assist the startups in obtaining additional funding. These services consisted of a series of relationships and events with private investors and venture capital firms all around Europe (and Silicon Valley), as well as public funding identification.
Main results obtained
The main results obtained were:
Welcome Event:
The IMPACT Training Welcome Day was a chance for the startups to learn more about the Acceleration process and also
a chance for mentors to learn more about the startups needs, share knowledge and experiences.
3 Please note that IMPACT Extension program did not offer online training services due to the short time period of the acceleration program (3
months instead of 6).

Mentoring:
Mentors’ preparation and training: Mentors received training sessions to make sure they understood their
responsibilities, the mentoring process and the tools developed to manage the whole process. We initially trained them in person (although they had the possibility to attend via the internet, using an online platform called Blackboard Collaborate) and we fine-tuned the process, creating video tutorial that were always available and training each mentor via an online call.
Mentoring System (suite of tools)
The tools include:
Online booking sessions: An online system designed to facilitate the process of booking sessions with the assigned
startup.
Logbook: An online document where the progress and development of the startup will be recorded session by session.

Mentor evaluation card: IMPACT set different metrics to measure in order to fine-tune and improve the mentoring
process for the following mentoring program: willingness to help, session value, relevance of mentor questions and
relevance of mentor recommendations.
To facilitate mentoring program duties and to consolidate information, the IMPACT team designed and created a Mentoring Website for each acceleration program, a private website only available to startups and mentors, where they can find integrated the “Mentoring System” and all informational documents, as well as duties to be fulfilled.
Mentoring sessions: Mentoring meetings were arranged with the objective of using each Follow Up Mentor’s (FuM)
know-how, network, and experience to support his or her assigned startup. In this sense, each mentor was responsible for scheduling one session per month in advance, with a minimum of one hour per session. Additionally, mentors were required to be available for six additional voluntary sessions, at the startups’ request. Regarding Specialized Mentors (SM) each startup had the opportunity to book seven sessions with the SM of their choice. In the IMPACT extension
program, due to the short time frame, startups had the opportunity to book four sessions with their FuM and two sessions with the SM of their choice.
As a result of hands-on experience with the mentoring process, IMPACT has developed a complete mentoring methodology that involves international and top experts identified as mentors, as well as a clear schedule of mentoring sessions. 54 FuM and 60 SM (such as Steve Cadigan, Didac Lee Gustavo Garcia Brusilovsky, Mauro del Rio, Rodrigo
Miranda, Javier Rodriguez Zapatero, etc.) are working with IMPACT’s beneficiaries.
On average, each startup had 9.2 sessions with the Follow up Mentor and 6.4 sessions with Specialized Mentors.
A total of 552 mentoring sessions were held with Follow up Mentors and 382 with Specialized Mentors. This makes a total of 934 mentoring sessions.
After three batches of acceleration, follow up Mentors had an overall average score of 9.35 out of 10, as evaluated by the startups.
Success cases: Follow-up Mentors (FuM) matching with startups
From the existing accelerator programs of ISDI and b-ventures, the IMPACT team created a custom process to figure out the
best mentor for each of the selected startups, covering the following criterias:
Fields of expertise
Market and industry knowledge
Contacts and network capabilities by industry
Availability time and eagerness to help startups
Country and startups proximity
Generally speaking, this process takes almost one month upon the selection of the startups. Beyond that in the IMPACT
Extension program, the IMPACT team conducted an interview with each startup to better understand the challenges they faced
and the areas where a mentor can help them most.
Some examples of a great fit between FuM and Startups are:

Follow-up and sustainability: Mentoring Committee
A beneficiary must pass the checks (Milestone Checks) to continue in the program and receive each part of the grant. The Milestone checks were performed by the FIWARE experts and the Mentoring Committee, twice (M3 and M6) in
each acceleration program and once in the Extension Program (M3):
The FIWARE experts were assigned to IMPACT Accelerator directly by the FIWARE technical chapter and the European Commission.
The Mentoring Committee was composed of one representative of each Consortium partner.
This criterion of distribution of the EC grant (delivered to startups in a number of phases in accordance with the
achievement of the deliverables proposed during the acceleration program) ensured efficiency and effectiveness in the use of EC funds.
The Mentoring Committee meetings were scheduled as following:
Mentoring Committee Months
1OC – 1MC May 2015
1OC – 2MC July 2015
2OC – 1MC November 2015
2OC – 2MC February 2016
3OC – 1MC March 2016
3OC – 2MC June 2016

Considering IMPACT Accelerator’s relative short lifespan to date, we have obtained great results in supporting startups with funding opportunities, both private and public. Some startups have obtained funding thanks to the introductions that IMPACT has made, while some mentors have invested in the companies they were mentoring.
Recently the first Exit (company acquisition) of an IMPACT Startups has happened, the financial terms are not yet disclosed but both the startup and the adquirer have obtained a successful agreement.
Priviledge meetings:
Scheduling the private meetings was done according to investors’ preferences: prior to the event each investor had the opportunity of selecting the startups that best fit their criteria. The privileged meetings took place before the startups’ pitches, according to the agenda in a room or corner prepared for one to one meet-ups. On average 15 privileged meetings were held per Demo Day.
Pitch Training:
To better assist the startups in defining and improving their pitch decks slides, presentation style, body language, timing and other important facts that define a successful pitch, the startups were encouraged to attend two different pitching sessions: a Pitch Workshop (open to all startups from a given batch), and a Storytelling Review Session
(open to the startups selected to pitch at the Demo Day).
Public Funding
One objective of this service was to inform the start-ups about the Complementary Funding Opportunities available for their business. To this end an individual and tailored “Report on Public Funding Opportunities” was develop for each start-up, a “Workshop on Public Funding Opportunities” was also organized to explain them, face to face, the main EU programmes of interest for them, and finally a “Help Desk Service” was also offered to all start-ups to help them in specific doubts they might have when selecting/preparing the proposal for some of the programmes indicated in the reports/workshop. For the startups of the extension a webinar on SME Instrument and a workshop on the same program was done. Resulting
of 22 companies applied for public funding and 4 have obtained some public funding.
AcceleraThor: From Logbook to a proprietary software
The Logbook and Booking system turned out to be even more important than expected, helping the IMPACT acceleration
team manage an open and remote acceleration process based on data. The system was developed in Google Apps, but
because of the intensive usage and its importance, the possibility of developing a more mature and reliable software was forged
in our minds. ISDI has led a team of developers, desgners and product manager to develop a proprietary software.
The software is currently under consutruction but an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) will be ready to be shipped soon. Some
of the main features we expect AcceleraThor to have can be found below:

4) Potential IMPACT & Continuation of the program
During the project, the consortium worked to obtain the following impact:
Awareness generated on FI-PPP environment of startups & web-entrepreneurs
Involvement of startups & entrepreneurs in developing applications and services based on FI technologies
Setting of innovative services and applications in different areas of usage within FI-PPP programme
Synergies with regional development policies
Effective collaboration with other FI-PPP initiatives such as A16, support actions, i-hubs
Establish public/private innovation clusters for ensuring FI sustainability
Contribution to FI deployment having a “real market pilot testing” on enablers use
4.1 Project’s impact for partners
The partners of the consortium were able to leverage on each other’s footprint to gain international exposure in most European countries and to deploy a global network.
Partners had the possibility to catch the latest trends on the ecosystem in Europe and to be connected with the startup ecosystem in order to find the best digital talents in Europe.
The partners of the consortium were able to leverage on the FI-PPP initiatives’ footprint in order to gain exposure worldwide.
The partners of the consortium defined an improved a selection process that can and will be used in future projects and that can be replicated in other organizations.
4.2 Continuation of the program
Partners defined an acceleration model that will continue in IMPACT Growth project, where the model will be
replicated in at least two regions in Europe. IMPACT growth will provide a world class acceleration program to startups including the following support services: Mentoring, training and funding support to European startups in Europe in four verticals: Smart Content, Smart Manufacturing, Smart Agrifood and Smart Cities.
Partners will continue to work in EU projects, with the same methodology for selection and acceleration and improving IMPACT project having a global exposure, focusing on sustainability of the accelerator beyond EU funding from the beginning, involving two VCs and four corporations.

5) Return on Investment (ROI) of the program
The ROI is measured as the increase in valuation of the companies, minus the total cost of the project (€ 7,8 M) divided
by the total cost of the project multiplied by 100.
ROI = increase in valuation -
total cost of the project
cost of the project x 100
For the analysis and calculation of ROI, IMPACT consortium has performed two different analysis, following two different
approaches, both meaningful and informative, still based on different criteria and assumptions:
The first analysis is based on the comparison between a) the objective valuation of a company before joining IMPACT
and b) the objective valuation of the same company year to date: such comparison is only applicable to the companies
which had received private funding before joining IMPACT, and then collected additional funding upon being selected by
IMPACT Program.
The companies fulfilling this criteria are 19 startups[1]: 15 of them receiving private investments vs equity by VCs and
Business Angels, while 4 of them [2] received funds as convertible notes, mainly by VCs. In detail:
Valuation before IMPACT: 28.359.000,00€
Valuation after IMPACT; 53.673.217,00€
Increase in valuation: € 25.314.217,00
ROI4; 225%
Private Funds raised in total: 11,965,347,00€
It shows the effectiveness of EC investment and the objective results achieved, against the original cost of the project.
The second analysis is less rigorous, still important and worthwhile to share, as it includes also those startups that had
not raised any private investment before IMPACT (thus there’s no pre-IMPACT objective valuation to compare, thus it’s
assumed to be zero), still they raised private funds upon joining IMPACT : 25 startups[4] fall into this category, generating
the following numbers:
Valuation before IMPACT: 28.359.000,00€
Valuation after IMPACT; 65.513.517,00€
Increase in valuation: 37.154.517,00€
ROI[5]; 376%
Private Funds raised in total: 13.681.347,00€
Important success cases deserving a special mention:
1) We recently registered the first Exit (company acquisition) of a startup accelerated by IMPACT: the financial terms
are not yet disclosed but both the startup and the acquirer have obtained a successful agreement.
2) 8fit: workouts and meal plans, a Spanish startup accelerated by IMPACT during its First Acceleration program has closed a financing round for € 2.950.000,00 at a pre-money valuation of 17.050.000€
