P10222 SAE ACTIVE CONTROLS
Chris Crowley
Mission Statement By implementing a hydraulically actuated
sway bar it will be possible for the team to increase there handling dynamics while starting a low risk vehicle control system.
Improvements can be made to both the Dynamic events as well as in Design presentations
Project Relevance Linear Actuation Development For SAE
Teams Linear Actuation For MSD Implementation Leverage ATV Auto Shift For Maximized
Outcome Instructional Tool for Vehicle Controls
Classes
Needs Project must:
Be direct bolt in to Baja Vehicle Be robust Be cost effective Compact Comply with all Baja SAE Rules
ControlActive Swaybar Industry’s first iteration
vehicle control Team has significant
amount of documented research System can be easily integrated into Baja
or Formula car Plan to use hydraulic actuator with

Staffing RequirementsName Disciplin
e Role / Skills
Chris Deminco ME Faculty Guide, Will work closely with the team on an on-going basis to facilitate success, vast knowledge of vehicle dynamics.
TBD EE Faculty Consultant, Will provide support with control system selection, integration and refinement.
Chris Crowley ME Project Manager, Schedule meeting, book keeping, and keep team and project on track. Encourage team members. Provide link to the Baja Team and machining knowledge.
TBD Student EE Share responsibility for the selection and integration of the control system and electrical sensors
TBD Student EE Share responsibility for the selection and integration of the control system and electrical sensors
TBD Student ME Spec out hydraulic actuator that can supply required load
Required Resources Baja Car CAD Models of the Car Sensors Actuators Team Advisor works at MOOG Controls
Inc.
Work Breakdown StructurePerson Week 0->1 Tasks Week 1->2 Tasks Week 2->3 Tasks
ME- Project Manager
Schedule team meetings and get group information, as well as get group caught up with background information of the project, and expectations. Develop Team norms.
Make sure everyone from the group is on task, and is up to speed with each other. Update website, and schedule any needed meetings with Baja.
Update website, make sure everyone is on track. Help the other MEs with the design and fabrication of test stand.
EEResearch sensors and get together with controls professor to go over project scope.
Continue research, start looking into where we can get the resources needed for the project.
Start finalizing designs for the test stand, and make sure all the necessary recourses are lined up for building it.
EE Research sensors and get together with controls professor to go over project scope.
Continue research, start looking into where we can get the resources needed for the project.
Start getting a hold of actuators and sensors, and wiring and testing them to make sure they will work as needed.
ME Get together with the project manager, and help review and research designs.
Start to familiarize self with vehicle dynamics and verify loading scenarios
Continue working with project manager for finalizing the design of the test stand.
Risk Assessment Lack of Controls Knowledge Electrical Interfacing Design Durability Implementation of design by team
Project SuccessA successful project would result in a
functioninglinear actuated sway bar on the baja car
with the control system and sensors required for theoperation.

Definition of SuceessThe SD team will be responsible for delivering to
the Baja team the Peak Engine TorquePeak Engine HpCorresponding rpm
This can then be used to optimize the CVT that is currently on the Baja car.
Outstanding Items Revisit QFD with Baja Team and SD Team Finish Uploading to Edge Further Understanding of Dyno. usage
and capabilities Possibly find or create some documentation
