    Project Engineer Roles and Responsibilities

    Role

    To identify and deliver innovative solutions that provide value for the customer and for

    BNL, right first time, on time.

    Nature and Scope of the Role

    The Project Engineer will work closely with the Business Development Manager and thecustomer from the earliest stages of an enquiry to agree the requirements and develop

    ideas in order to produce a concept design and project proposal. If approved, the ProjectEngineer will develop a detailed model and conduct a validation assessment of the design

    to ensure that it will work Right First Time.

    The Project Engineer will then manage the delivery of the supporting functions necessaryto ensure the successful delivery of the project as required, for example: prototypemanufacture; purchasing; R&D; quality plans; production engineering; 2D drawings; tool

    design, manufacture and development.

    The Project Engineer will be responsible for ensuring successful hand-over to production.

    The effectiveness of the Project Engineer will be measured by the achievement of thefollowing:

    Design fit for purpose for the customer i.e. by the receipt of an order for tooling;

    Design fit for tooling such that Off Tool Samples achieve designed intent;

    Design profitability i.e. the maximisation of profit for BNL whilst still delivering aproduct within a price envelope that generates sufficient value for the customer;

    Design fit for manufacture and assembly by the acceptance from manufacturing athandover; the absence of production problems thereafter and the accuracy of thecost sheets vs actual costs.

    In addition to this primary role, the Project Engineer will be required to provide technical

    support where necessary. This may include, but is not limited to the following:

    Supporting the Business Development Manager in selling BNLs technologicalcapabilities to prospective customers;

    Supporting the Business Development Manager in the Production of Request for

    Quote submissions;

    Managing change requests;

    Investigating problems and complaints.

    Responsibilities

    Reporting to the New Product Development Manager, the Project Engineer will:

    Have end-to-end responsibility for a project from conception through toproduction.

    Provide technical support to Customers, Business Development Managers andManufacturing.

    Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience

    Required:

    Effective listener: good at listening to requirements or problems without bias.

    Constructive questioning: good at identifying all the necessary criteria.

    Have strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills.

    Sound engineering knowledge and experience to enable effective appreciation ofthe customers requirements and the environment in which the solution will berequired to operate.

    The ability to think beyond the boundaries and challenge the status-quo.

    Good at building rapport with the customer in order to achieve a closer workingrelationship and openness.

    Have the ability to develop innovative and practical design solutions to technical

    problems.

    Have experience of using analytical techniques for example Moldflow and FEAanalysis to demonstrate that a solution will work prior to committing tomanufacture of prototypes or tooling.

    Have an understanding of the value that features and attributes deliver for thecustomer.

    Are cost-conscious and able to critically analyse new and existing designs togenerate cost reductions.

    Have a meticulous approach to quality and familiarity with FMEAs/riskassessment.

    Have proven recent experience of designing complex assemblies within a 3D-design package (preferably Mechanical Desktop, Pro Engineer or SolidWorks).

    Have experience of managing projects and are familiar with using project plans,issue and risk management and change control.

    Are an effective leader and facilitator within a team with the ability to influence

    and manage other internal and external suppliers to the product developmentprocess to ensure the timely success of the project.

    Have excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectivelywith technical and non-technical disciplines, production personnel and executives,both internal and external.

    Display a positive attitude towards the customer.

    Domestic and international travel as be required with the potential of multipleovernight stays and weekend and evening disruption.

    Have a recognised Degree in Mechanical Engineering

    Have technical fluency in English and Mandarin.

    Be conversant with the plastic injection moulding process and have experience inthe design of moulded components and assemblies.

    The role will be based in Knaresborough, UK. There is the potential for subsequentemployment in our Shanghai office with the responsibility for supporting the entire China

    New Product Development.
