Aggreko Facility and TILD Diagrams
Project E1.06 – Transformer Inrush Limiting Device (TILD)Project Manager: Gustavo Madero
Student Team: David Lozano, Jacob Mylius, Alex Ramirez
This project will deliver a Transformer Inrush Current Limiting Device (TILD) capable of reducing high inrush current experienced by Aggreko’s 1.5MVA transformer. Project deliverables include:
• Concept design and electrical schematics of a parallel impedance network, and LED panel
• Design and electrical schematics of a multifunction time delay relay circuit
• Mechanical drawings for transformer inrush limiting device (TILD)
Background Information• Inrush current during initial energization
can be as high at 10 to 15 kA• Aggreko has no system to limit
repeated exposure to inrush current which risks long term degradation of 2000A main line fuses
• The inrush current phenomenon is exasperated by residual flux density in the transformer core
• At transformer switch off residual flux resides in core of the transformer and subsequent switch on of the transformer drives the core into saturation causing a inrush current
Sponsor Information
• Aggreko is a global leader in mobile power generation, cooling and heating equipment.
• Aggreko maintains this leadership by working with researchers and students at leading universities to investigate and find solutions to energy problems of the future.
• Partnered with Aggreko, Texas State students will seek to address inrush current at their Austin based facility.
• The method selected to suppress inrush current will be pre-insertion (closing) resistors in the form of a parallel impedance network per phase
• Contactors will be placed in series with each resistive element and set to actuate sequentially under control of a multifunction time delay relay
• LEDs will inform user that contactors have actuated successfully
• The TILD is subsequently bypassed by the 2000A breaker
• Fuses will be used for TILD circuit protection
Next Semester• Finalize design schematics for TILD• Explore computer models for inrush
current • Attend Aggreko for building and
testing of TILD
