ADVANCED FILE SEARCHING

Allows you to search for files and folders, digital media files, people, computers on a network, and information on the internet.

Search Companion File search – include digital media files (pictures music, and

video files), document files (word processing, spreadsheet, database, and so on), and all files and folders (digital media files, system files, folder files, and so on).

Network search – allows you to search for computers and people on a network.

Internet search – Allows you to search Web pages on the Internet for information.

Click the Start button and then click Search on the Start menu

PERFORMING A SEARCH FOR ALL FILES AND

FOLDERS Case-sensitive search – is a search in which the

capitalization of a file or folder name entered in the Search Companion balloon must match exactly the capitalization of the file or folder name on the local hard drive.

Click All files and folders in the Search Companion balloon

SENDING A FILE TO THE MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER

Right-click the file name, point to Send To on the shortcut menu, and then point to location of choice on the Send To menu

Click File on the menu bar and then point to Save Search

USING A SAVED SEARCH TO SEARCH FOR FILES

Click the Start button and then click the saved location on the Start menu. Double-click the Files containing text support icon in the Saved Search group. When the Search Results window displays, maximize the window and then click the Search button

DELETING MULTIPLE FILES

Select the saved file and Files containing text support files in the My Documents window

Right-click either icon Click Delete on the shortcut menu Click the Yes button in the Confirm Multiple File

SEARCHING FOR PICTURE FILES

Metadata – is identifying information about a file that is stored within a file.

Picture and photo files metadata might include: width and height of image resolution color depth camera model flash mode f-number exposure time

Click the Start button, click Search, and then maximize the Search Results window. Point to Pictures, music, or video in the Search Companion balloon

Order of Search First search is in My Documents, (My Music, My Pictures, My

Video) Second search is all other files and folders on the local hard

drive. (does not include hidden or system files) Final search is Metadata and file names

Point to Documents (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.) in the Search Companion balloon

SEARCHING THE INTERNET USING SEARCH COMPANION

A search engine retrieves and displays a list of links to Web pages based upon the keywords in the text box

Default search engine is MSN Search (unless changed)

SEARCH The Classic Internet search allows you to search for Web

pages, mailing or e-mail addresses, business information, maps, encyclopedia articles, and pictures

Search preferences includes using or not using an animated screen character Using or not using the Indexing Service for faster local

searches Standard or Advanced method Search Companion or Classic Internet search Show or not show balloon tips Turn on or off the AutoComplete feature

CHANGING A SEARCH PREFERENCE

The default Internet search behavior for searching the Internet is the Search Companion

Click the Change preferences in the Search Companion balloon

A title and seven preferences display. Choose your preference.

BEGINNING A CLASSIC INTERNET SEARCH

Click the Change Internet Search behavior

Click the Classic Internet search

Click the Start button, click Search on the Start menu, and maximize the Search Results window. Point to Search the Internet

SEARCHING FOR A WEB PAGE USING A KEYWORD

A search service allows you to enter keywords (a word or a phrase) about a topic that you are interested, searches for the Web pages that contain the keywords, and then displays a list of links that you can click on the display the associates Web pages.

MSN Search is one of six search services available to search based on a keyword MSN Search, Overture, AltaVista, Lycos, Excite, Yahoo!, Euro

BEGINNING A NEW SEARCH

Toolbar contains three buttons New (start a new search) Next (perform the previously performed search using

another search service Customize (select the search service you wish to use)

Click the New button in the Search pane to begin a new search

SEARCHING THE INTERNET FOR A MAILING ADDRESS

There are three links at the bottom of the Search pane Files and Folders Computers People

InfoSpace is the search service available to search for mailing and e-mail addresses.

Click Find a person’s address, type the First Name in the text box, type the Last Name in the text box, and then click the Search button

SEARCHING FOR A MAP

There are two search services available to search for maps. Expedia.com MapQuest

Click the New button. Click Find a map. Click the Search For box arrow and then click Address, Place or Landmark. Click the text box and then type in your address, place or landmark. Click the Search button

RESETTING THE INTERNET SEARCH BEHAVIOR

Always remember to reset your search behavior Click the Start button and then click Search on the Start menu Click Change Preferences in the Search Companion balloon Click Change Internet search behavior Click With Search Companion Click the OK button in the Search Companion balloon Click the Close button in the Search Results window

VIEWING THE CONTENTS OF THE RECYCLE BIN

Recycle Bin is set for 10% of the total size of the hard drive (this can be changed)

Recycle Bin empty restore a file permanently delete a file

Double-click the Recycle Bin icon.

RESTORING A DELETED FILE, FOLDER, OR SHORTCUT

Click the file that you want to restore to select the icon and then click the Restore this item in the Recycle Bin Tasks area.

VIEWING A RESTORED FILE

You need to go the original location that the file was saved for example: My Documents

EMPTYING THE RECYCLE BIN

When you no longer need the files or the Recycle Bin is full you should empty its contents.

There are several ways to empty the Recycle Bin Click the Empty the Recycle Bin task in the Recycle

Bin Tasks area. Click the Yes button to Confirm the delete

Right click the Recycle Bin icon and click Empty the Recycle Bin

VIEWING RECYCLE BIN PROPERTIES

Properties include: delete a file without first sending it to the Recycle Bin display the confirmation dialog box change the amount of disk space

Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop and then click Properties on the shortcut menu
