VorwortIn den Werken der modernen Orchester-

literaturwirdseit Richard Strauss vom Kon-trabassisten ein solches MaBan teehnischemKtinnen verlangt,wie man es vorher kaumfr mglichgehalten htte. Dadurch wurdendie schuimBigenAusbildungsgrenzenbe-trchtlichnach oben verschoben, was dieLcke,die in musikalischwertvollerStudien-Iiteraturfr dieses Instrumentvon jeherklaffte,umso deutlichersichtbar machte.Um diesem Umstand abzuheifen, hat derHerausgeber der vorliegendenHefteaus demreichen Etdenwerk der bekanntesten Vio-loncellolehrerund Virtuosenwie J. J. Dotz-auer (1?82-i860),J. Merk (1795-1852),S. Lee (1805-i8B?),A. Franchomme (1808 bis1884), F. Battanchon (1814-1893), J. Stransky(1810-1890), die noch heute einen Grund-pfeilerfrdie Ausbildungauf dem Violon-cello abgeben, eine Auswahlfrden Kontra-baB getroffen unddiesem Instrumentdienst-bar gemacht.

Die Bearbeitung dieser Etden erstrecktsich nicht nur darauf, durch Transpositiondem Tonumfang zu entsprechen, sie versuchtvielmehr,bei grBtmglichsterSchonung desOriginals,durch gelegentliche geringfgigeVernderungen die Diskrepanz zwischen derQuintenstimmungdes Violoncellosund derQuartenstimmungdes Kontrabasses auszu-gleichen.

Es sei noch erwhnt, daB nach diesemEtdenwerk schon seit Jahren an der Staats-akademie fr Musikin Wien mitErfolgun-terrichtetwird.

This in turn has made the gapin musicallyworthwhilestudy literatureforthe instrument,a gap present fromthe be-ginning,even more obviouslynoticeable. Toremedy the situation,the editorof the pre-sent volumes has made a selection from thestudy worksof the best-known violoncelloteachers and virtuosos,such as J. J. Dotzauer(1?82-1860),J. Merk(1795-1852),S. Lee(1805-188?), A. Franchomme (1808-1884)'F. Battanchon (1814-1893),and J. Stransky(1810-1890).Even today, these works formthe basis of violoncelloinstruction,and theeditor has placed them at the service of thedouble bass.

The arranging of these studies does notextend simplyto transposing them to suitthe range of the doubie bass; the editor hasattempted to retain the originalwhereverpossible, adjusting the tuning in fifthsof theviooncelloto the tuningin fourths of thedouble bass by means of occasional smallchanges.

The editor mentionsfurther, that thisstudy workhas been successfullytaught forseveral years at the Academy of MusieandDramaticArtin Vienna.
