Progress made by the Joint Task Force on Environmental Indicators
in 2012
Nona ILIUKHINAUNECE Environment Division
Work accomplished during 2012:5th session (4-6 July) &
6th session (30 Oct-1 Nov)
Altogether considered 12 indicators from the Guidelines and 12 additional indicators
12 indicators from the Guidelines:
(1) Emissions of pollutants into the atmospheric air(2) Greenhouse gas emissions(3) Household water use per capita(4) Water losses(5) Land uptake(6) Fertilizer consumption(7) Air temperature(8) Atmospheric precipitation(9) Drinking water quality(10) Final energy consumption(11) Total energy consumption(12) Average age of road motor vehicle fleet
Work accomplished during 2012:5th session (4-6 July) &
6th session (30 Oct-1 Nov)(continued)
12 additional indicators, not covered by the Guidelines:
(1) Total water use(2) Public water supply(3) Connection to public water supply(4) Population connected to wastewater treatment(5) Wastewater treatment facilities(6) Concentrations of pollutants in coastal seawater and sediments (except nutrients)(7) Biosphere reserves and wetlands of international importance(8) Invasive alien species(9) Catches of fish and other aquatic animals and products(10) Water-use intensity by agriculture(11) Cropping and livestock patterns(12) Gross nitrogen balance
Summary analysis12 indicators from the Guidelines
No problems for most countries for the following indicators: Air temperature Atmospheric precipitation Drinking water quality
Some problems encountered for the following indicators: Emissions of pollutants into the atmospheric air Greenhouse gas emissions Household water use per capita Water losses Final energy consumption Total energy consumption Land uptake Fertilizer consumption Average age of road motor vehicle fleet
Summary analysis12 additional indicators
Agreed on the texts of the following indicators:
(1) Total water use(2) Public water supply(3) Connection to public water supply(4) Population connected to wastewater treatment(5) Wastewater treatment facilities(6) Concentrations of pollutants in coastal seawater and sediments (except nutrients)(7) Biosphere reserves and wetlands of international importance(8) Invasive alien species(9) Water-use intensity by agriculture (title changed to “Irrigation”)(10) Gross nitrogen balance
(!) Not approved:o Cropping and livestock patternso Catches of fish and other aquatic animals and products
Future work:7th session JTF (2-4 July 2013)
Indicator No. 35 from the Guidelines "Waste reuse and recycling“
6 additional water-related indicators Total water use Public water supply Connection of population to public water supply Population connected to wastewater treatment Wastewater treatment facilities Concentration of pollutants in seawater and sediment
Proposal for additional transport and environment indicators
Future work:8th session JTF (4-6 November 2013)
2 additional agri-environment indicators Irrigation Gross nitrogen balance
2 additional environment-related energy indicators Final electricity consumption Gross electricity production
2 additional biodiversity indicators Biosphere reserves and wetlands of international importance Invasive alien species
Indicator on Environment protection expenditure
Proposal for green economy indicators
Future workThe Joint Task Force agreed
Start revising the text of the ECE Guidelines by:
introducing the agreed amendments to the descriptions of the individual indicators
adding tables on calculation of indicators with relevant glossaries of terms and references
including additional indicators into the Guidelines, whose descriptions have been agreed by the Joint Task Force.
Future work: funding
Current funding available till April 2013 under the ENPI-SEIS project
Additional funds are required to continue work after April 2013
Thank you for your attention and cooperation!
