etamorphosis’ is the keyword
for our Foundation this winter.
Since its establishment in 2001,
the Foundation has continued to evolve. From
two persons’ commitment to touch the lives
of others, the Foundation has become a solidly
structured organisation
eager to be a player,
however small its actions,
on the global stage. As
our President insists in
her introduction to this
inaugural issue-it is a metamorphosis shaped
by passion, compassion and commitment.
In 2008, we launched the first edition of our
newsletters, La Lettre, to keep you informed.
You have been our enthusiastic, loyal and
encouraging readership. Now, as the activities
of the Foundation expand in diversity and reach
more parts of the world than ever before, the
need to create a new medium to report and
archive these actions became evident. The
newsletter today has been transformed into a
more structured format with a new design and
richer content.
This metamorphosis is called‘Progress’and
will be as ambitious as
its’ name suggests. It
will report the progress
of our actions across
the continents and
the progress of our
commitments in the areas we embrace. All
our efforts made in the field of education, in
its most diverse and broad sense, are aimed
at one perspective: to give the young and
disadvantaged, the means and tools to transform
their own futures.
We hope you will continue to support and
follow‘Progress’in our issues to come.

Beach... A near abandoned
school that would become an
Institution. A “Family” that
would learn how to learn.
What has happened to the Foundation since
its inception is not too dissimilar to the actions
of a chrysalis transforming itself into a butterfly.
From one beginning – Life changes!
This metamorphosis completes the cycle for the
beautiful butterfly. Yet, this journey is not enough
to sustain the Foundation that must continue
to evolve, to transform and crucially remain
transparent, like the gossamer wings!
Transparency in its actions and of its
expenditures and how they are used and how
they benefit are crucial.
This message may seem severe but it is
given with age, maturity and a deep sense of
responsibility.
Our bright future relies on being faithful to this
philosophy.

rganised since 1999 by“Children & Future”Association, Monaco, the
No Finish Line is a fund-raising initiative of a special kind.
Placed under the High Patronage of H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco
and held annually in Monaco, the NFL invites the athletes, both professional and
amateur, to run, during its eight days of competition, on its specially arranged
running track at the Port Hercule. For each kilometre covered by the runners, the

According to the tradition, the first ever athletic competition was inaugurated in 776 B.C. at Olympia in the Peloponnesos, Ancient Greece. Later on, theses games were also practiced in other Greek-speaking cities such as Delphi, Nemea, and Isthmia. These games were then called Panhellenistic (pan=all, hellenikos=Greek).
Athletics, for the ancient Greeks, were all about one's physical endeavor to overtake an opponent. For this reason, sports in ancient Greece generally excluded team competitions. For this same reason, footraces were a major attraction during the Olympic Games. The race was the ultimate summation of the feat of an individual, propelled on his own on a racecourse before a demanding public, and – ultimately – his triumphant struggle against elements.

Since 2009, Cuomo Foundation operates hand in
hand with the“Children & Future”Association
as the event’s main sponsor. While providing
the NFL with valuable financial support, the
Cuomo Foundation presents also its own
athletic team for this annual race. This year,
its energetic captain Emanuela Montagnese
led the Cuomo Foundation Team, including 58
enthusiastic runners. Hailing from Bordighera,
Italy, Ms. Montagnese is a high-profile athlete
who has shown her colours both in track sports
and aquatics. Covering together a distance of
3532.375 km, the Cuomo Foundation Team
was placed 22nd in a race run by outstanding
runners from all over the world regrouped into
250 teams. The captain herself ran 114.125 km
during the race, which constitutes a remarkable
personal achievement.
After eight days of race, the event ended by
covering a total of 342 322,75 km, a distance
which represents a sum of 393 672 € for the
children’s causes. The Cuomo Foundation,
vigorously active in the field of education of the
underprivileged children, plans to support this
event in the years to come.

The Cuomo Foundation is the main sponsor for the “Roma”
International Piano Competition, organised by the ‘Fryderyk
Chopin’ Association and held annually in Rome. The patronage
and support the Cuomo Foundation provides to this event has been
instrumental in the success the competition has met over the years. Founded
in 1989 by the renowned pianist Marcella Crudeli, the competition recognises
each year young, emerging pianists from around the world and helps them
develop their international careers.

The Cuomo Foundation finds a perfect echo
in this annual cultural event, whose objective
is to“support worthy and needy young artists
through the culture of music”. In fact, the
Foundation itself has been aspiring for over
a decade to support needy and meritorious
youth from around the world and help them find
their place in the competitive modern world.
The patronage thus granted by the Cuomo
Foundation over the years has come to full
fruition; a large number of young talents have
now comfortably established themselves in the
professional field of music thanks largely to the
recognition they obtained through the “Roma”
International Piano Competition.
We look forward to supporting next year's event
in Rome, which will mark the 25th anniversary of
the competition and the 10th year of support and
encouragement from the Cuomo Foundation.

Global Climate Change
The Cuomo Foundation Collaborates with The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in The Field of Research
Since 2013, the Cuomo Foundation, in partnership with the Prince Albert
II of Monaco Foundation, grants scholarships to a number of doctoral
researchers from developing countries. This scholarship programme,
originally launched in 2011, is an initiative of the Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change (IPCC), Geneva. Established by the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988,
the IPCC is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change.
The relevance of the submitted project proposals to the issues related to climate
change is in fact a determining factor to be eligible for this programme.

Within the framework of the IPCC
Scholarship Programme, placed under
the generous patronage of the Foundation
are six high-calibre researchers from six
countries: Cambodia, Columbia, India,
Myanmar, South Africa and Vietnam.
The research projects of these scholars
directly focus on measuring the impact
of the global climate change and solving
problems related to the worldwide
environmental issues. Within the context
of this programme, they are entitled to two
years financial support provided by the
Cuomo Foundation.

The consideration of applications for the next
edition of the fellowship programme is now
active. The Cuomo Foundation and the IPCC are
now in the process of examining the candidacies
for the next initiative.
Through the mediation of Duong TRAN ANH
DUONG from Vietnam, one of the current
participants of the fellowship programme, the
Cuomo Foundation was introduced to the Water
Resource University, where Duong Tran Anh
Duong is a close collaborator.
The Water Resource University of Hanoi,
founded in 1959 formerly known as the Academy
of Water Resources and Electricity, is a leading
research institution in the region of South East
Asia with a multi-discipline curricula covering
topics such as water resources, hydropower,
water supply, sewerage, natural resources,
environment, disaster management and climate
change.

Discussions are now underway
between the administration of the Water
Resource University and the Cuomo
Foundation to determine specific
aspects of aid and support that the
Foundation could provide the University
with. The fact that this University has
been conducting valuable research
and creating highly skilled professionals
for over fifty years in the field of natural
resources management – especially
of water – particularly appealed to
the Foundation. It goes without saying
that, in order to limit the harm already
caused to the planet by climate change
and to implement solutions for the
future, States need to have their own
local actors who perfectly grasp the
specificities of each country. Hence,
both the fellowship programme and
now this future partnership with the
Water Resource University are major
steps taken by the Foundation to
contribute to the global efforts made in
favour of a sustainable natural resource
management.
