We have divided the contents into groups offeatures that are usually changed together. Forexample, all of the RS-232 parameters (baud rate, parity, stop bits, etc.) are grouped together. Checkthe Index for the location of specific programminglabels.

This introduction describes the programming andconfiguration procedures for the Magellan scannerand scanner/scale.

Scanner Programming: describes howto put the scanner in ProgrammingMode and how to use the program-ming barcodes to set the scanner’sparameters.

Special Labels: includes a set of labelswhich perform unique functions andcannot be duplicated by standard labeldefinition and printing equipment. Each special label affects the scannerwhen in normal operating mode. These include:

• Switch Label - puts the scanner inProgramming Mode and exits fromProgramming Mode.

Page 7: Programming Kit - JPOS Software · 1 MAGELLAN ® PROGRAMMING W/BARCODES This programming guide contains the procedures and barcode programming labels necessary to set …

3

• Increment Volume Label - changes thespeaker volume setting in volatile(temporary) memory. If power to thescanner is interrupted, the volume willrevert to the default setting.

Return to Factory Settings: resets allscanner programmable options to theoriginal factory settings. Any specialfeatures or options programmed priorto scanning this label in ProgrammingMode must be reselected.

User Features: allow selection of On/OffSwitch, Laser Timeout, Motor Timeout,Peripheral Port, Speaker Volume,Double Read Timeout interval, andPrice/Weight Check Digit read andtransmission.

When the speaker's volume is pro-grammed with these labels, the settingis stored in default memory. If powerto the scanner is interrupted, thevolume setting is retained.

RS-232 Communication Format: settingsare used only with scanners whichhave an RS-232 interface. Optionsinclude Data Bits, Baud Rate, Parity,Handshake, Stop Bit, Prefixes and HostEcho.

OCIA Communication Format: is usedonly with scanners that have an OCIAcommunication interface. The labels inthis manual allow you to change OCIAinterface types and enable or disablean Intercharacter Delay.

Symbology Selection: allow selection ofthe types of barcode (symbologies) thescanner can read. These features alsoinclude UPC/EAN Expansion, controlthe calculation and transmission ofcheck digits for Code 39. If Inter-leaved 2 of 5 symbologies is selected, label lengths settings are required.

SCANNER PROGRAMMING

(HOW IT WORKS)Magellan features advanced programming capabili-ties which lets you change the scanner’s configura-tion and functional behavior by using the EAN-13programming labels contained in this manual.

The scanner’s operating parameters are held inthree different portions of memory.

• RAM (Random Access Memory) holdsthe current operational settings whilethe scanner is powered-up. Thesesettings are lost when power to thescanner is removed. For example, theIncrement Volume label changes thevolume setting held in RAM, but is lostwhen power to the scanner is inter-rupted. RAM is temporary or ‘volatile’memory.

• Default Memory is stored in theEEPROM (non-volitile memory) andholds the operational settings that areloaded to RAM each time the scanner ispowered-up. This portion of memory is

Page 10: Programming Kit - JPOS Software · 1 MAGELLAN ® PROGRAMMING W/BARCODES This programming guide contains the procedures and barcode programming labels necessary to set …

6

preserved even if the scanner is powereddown. All settings made through theProgramming Mode are stored in defaultmemory.

• Permanent Memory is also stored inthe EEPROM and holds the factoryprogrammed settings for all of thescanner’s operational parameters. Thecontents of permanent memory areloaded into default memory when theReturn to Factory Settings label isscanned. The contents of permanentmemory can only be modified at thefactory.

By entering the ‘Programming Mode’the desired characteristics can be set indefault memory by scanning program-ming barcode labels. These settingsare saved even if the scanner ispowered down.

PROGRAMMING YOUR SCANNER

To program your scanner:

1. Power-up the scanner to be pro-grammed by plugging the power cordinto the scanner and an electrical outletof the appropriate voltage. Wait forthe scanner to complete the selftestroutine and emit a tone. The greenlamp will light steadily, indicating thatthe scanner is in normal OperatingMode.

2. Put the scanner into ProgrammingMode by scanning the Switch Label(located on page 13 and on the insideof the back cover).

The green LED flashes continuouslyindicating that the scanner is inProgramming Mode.

Page 12: Programming Kit - JPOS Software · 1 MAGELLAN ® PROGRAMMING W/BARCODES This programming guide contains the procedures and barcode programming labels necessary to set …

8

3. Scan a programming label(s) for thefeature you want to change. Thescanner will emit a 'good read' tone toindicate that the label has been readand the setting has been stored in thescanner’s memory. Scan the remainingprogramming labels as required.

If a label scanned is not a validprogramming label, the scanner willemit a low rejection tone.

4. After all the desired programminglabels have been successfully scanned, exit Programming Mode by pressingthe Operator switch or scanning theSwitch Label. The green lamp willlight dimly, indicating that the scanneris ready for normal operation.

Page 13: Programming Kit - JPOS Software · 1 MAGELLAN ® PROGRAMMING W/BARCODES This programming guide contains the procedures and barcode programming labels necessary to set …

PROGRAMMING CONVENTIONS

• All options set while in ProgrammingMode are stored in default memory, and will be retained even if thescanner is powered-down.

• Settings are stored on a first-in, first-outbasis. The last programming labelscanned for a given option is thesetting stored in memory. For ex-ample, if a programming label whichsets the baud rate at 9600 is scanned, followed by a label which sets thebaud rate at 19,200, the scanner will beprogrammed with a baud rate of19,200.

• Only labels included in this manualwill be accepted as valid programminglabels. Labels which attempt to setfeatures not implemented in ascanner’s software revision will berejected as invalid. Programminglabels which are not printed in accor-dance with industry standards may alsobe rejected.

Page 14: Programming Kit - JPOS Software · 1 MAGELLAN ® PROGRAMMING W/BARCODES This programming guide contains the procedures and barcode programming labels necessary to set …

10

• If an invalid label is scanned when inProgramming Mode, the scanner willemit a low tone to indicate that thelabel is either not a programming labelor that it contains values outside of theacceptable programming range.

• After five minutes of inactivity inProgramming Mode, the scanner willrevert to normal Operating Mode. Anyoptions set during the programmingsession will be stored and activated.

• If confusion arises as to which optionshave been set during a programmingsession, scanning the Return to FactorySettings label will reset the scanner tothe original factory defaults for alloptions, regardless of interface type.

We recommend that you use the tableprovided in the back of this manual torecord all changes that you make. Thiswill help to ensure that you can recordall modifications that you have madeto the factory default configuration.

This will be very helpful if you mustreturn Magellan to the factory defaultsettings.

11

PROGRAMMABLE FEATURESThe remainder of this manual includes program-ming labels for all Magellan's scanner and scanner/scale programmable features. Refer to the detailedfeatures listing shown in the index at the back ofthis manual to find the individual features that youwish to change.

SPECIAL LABELSThere are two programming labels in this manualthat work differently from all the other labelsincluded in this Programming Guide; the IncrementVolume label and the Switch label.

Increment Volume works withoutentering Programming Mode, but itsvolume selection is lost when power isremoved from the scanner.

The Switch label is the key that allowsyou to enter and exit ProgrammingMode.

Page 16: Programming Kit - JPOS Software · 1 MAGELLAN ® PROGRAMMING W/BARCODES This programming guide contains the procedures and barcode programming labels necessary to set …

12

INCREMENT VOLUME

The Increment Volume label affects the scannerwhen in normal Operating Mode. Each pass of thelabel increments the speaker volume to the nextloudest available level. When the highest of thethree available levels is reached, the sequence startsagain at the quietest level. If speaker volume is setusing this label, the scanner reverts to the defaultvolume setting when power to the scanner isinterrupted. To permanently store changes to thespeaker’s default volume use the labels titled,Speaker Volume, later in this manual.

Increment Volume

Page 17: Programming Kit - JPOS Software · 1 MAGELLAN ® PROGRAMMING W/BARCODES This programming guide contains the procedures and barcode programming labels necessary to set …

13

SWITCH LABEL

Like the Increment Volume label, the Switch labelaffects the scanner when in normal OperatingMode. Scanning the Switch label in normal Operat-ing Mode causes the scanner to enter ProgrammingMode. Scanning the Switch label while in Program-ming Mode instructs the scanner to save allchanges made while in Programming Mode, exitProgramming Mode, reset the scanner to implementthe changes you made, and return to normalOperating Mode. All programming sessions mustbegin with the Switch label in order for the scannerto recognize them as programming labels and endwith the Switch label for the scanner to store thechanges you have made.

It is a good practice to cover the label on theopposite page to prevent Magellan from readingboth labels when changing a feature.

TIMEOUTS

Timeouts allow you to shut off the scanner's laserand/or motor if the scanner isn't used for apredetermined period of time. This feature isincluded to prolong the life of the motor andVisible Laser Diode (VLD).

NOTELaser safety requires that the laserswitch off before the motor. If you setthe motor timeout shorter than the la-ser timeout, the motor will remain onuntil the laser shuts off.

If you want to maximize both productivity andscanner life, set laser to timeout in five minutes, butleave the motor on for fifteen minutes. Thescanner will be ready to scan, and you will prolongthe life of the VLD.

HANDHELD PERIPHERIAL PORT SPEED

Since the communication speed of handheldscanners vary greatly, it is necessary to select aspeed that tells Magellan how long to wait toreceive a complete barcode data. This selectionprocess is rather unscientific (trial and error) sinceindustry standards do not exist. We have includedreferences for known and tested models of othermanufacturers handheld scanners, but these shouldbe considerer as guidelines since newer and oldermodels from the same manufacturer may bedifferent.

The selectable options are named speeds fivethrough nine with five being used for scanners thatcommunicate at a slow rate and nine for scannersthat communicate at a faster rate.

CHANGING BARCODE TYPESOne of Magellan's features is the ability to auto-discriminate between the UPC/EAN symbologyfamily and three industrial codes; Code 39, Inter-leaved 2 of 5 and Code 128. The followingbarcodes allow you to change the types of barcodesymbologies that your scanner recognizes. Be surethat your POS terminal interface can recognize thebarcodes you wish to enable before you changethese settings.

To change symbologies:

1. Select the symbology you wish toenable. (e.g. Code 39)

2. Scan the appropriate programmingbarcode label that enables the selectedsymbology.

3. Enable all additional parameters thatare required by your POS terminal (e.g.check digits, start/stop characters, etc).

All of the symbology selection features on thefollowing pages can be used to customize theMagellan scanner or scanner/scale.

SCALE ENFORCED ZERO RETURN - ENABLE

Scan this label to enable the Enforce Zero Returnfeature. This feature monitors the scale to ensurethat it returns to zero within four minutes after thelast weighing transaction was completed. If thescale fails to return to zero within the allotted time, the scale will be rendered inoperable untilrezeroed.

If the display shows a negative weight prior to atransaction, weighing operations will not beallowed until the scale is rezeroed.

NOTEIn some cases local regulatory agencieswill require the scale to be recalibrated.Check to ensure your actions are in compli-ance with these requirements.

Switch Label

SWITCH LABEL

All programming sessions must begin by scanningthe Switch label in order for the scanner to recog-nize them as programming labels and end with theSwitch label for the scanner to store the changesyou have made. A duplicate of this label andinstructions for its use are found on page 13.

When changing (programming) a feature, it is agood practice to cover the label on the oppositepage to prevent the scanner from reading bothlabels since it reads both the leading and trailingedges of all items that are scanned.
