There is so much in Scouting that makes me proud to be Chief Scout. Proud of everyone who gets out there and gets involved. With so many great events happening over the last year, where do I begin?

Start with over 4,000 Scouts and Explorers swooping into Wintercamp at Gilwell Park and Hawkhirst. The first ever Fundays at Woodhouse Park welcomed 1,000 excited, exhilarated and happily exhausted Beavers and Cubs. I’m so pleased I was at Youlbury in May to see 500 young people receive an award at the Oxfordshire Scouts’ awards day, and I’m so honoured a new purpose-built lodge at Youlbury completed in July has been named ‘Bear’s Den!’ With weatherproof facilities, the centre offers even more young people the opportunity to experience great Scouting adventures.

More Explorers, Network and adults than before took part in skills courses at Scout Activity Centres in 2014. These range from BCU/UKCC 2 Star Paddle Sport Award Courses at Great Tower and Hawkhirst, to Campcraft Practical Skills at Woodhouse Park, and fantastic climbing courses at Ferny Crofts and Yr Hafod.

Eight Scout Activity Centres hold Adventuremark and the LOtC Quality Badge. This means they can deliver high standard, quality-assured courses and activities. These superb amenities put Scout Activity Centres firmly on the map, supporting Scouting and providing amazing experiences for all.

The GuideFollowing your feedback, we have made a few additions to this year’s guide. There is a pull out calendar for you to put on your wall and a handy booking guide with suggested questions you may want to ask us. A whole new section has been added on page 21 dedicated to DofE opportunities for 16 to 25s, and we’ve added a new symbol to the key which indicates which courses are eligible for Development Grants Board (DGB) funding. Keep an eye out for our green boxes throughout the booklet which tell you about other courses, badges or new additions that you may find useful.

Closed coursesSome National Governing Body (NGB) and skills courses can still be arranged for a group of 8+ people on a date to suit the group. All prerequisites apply so please read the course information on the relevant Section page. To find out more about how to arrange a closed course for a group please contact your preferred centre. If you are not sure which location might be best for you, have a look at the centre information at scouts.org.uk/sac.

FundraisingWe appreciate that finding the money tofinance your trip to one of our Scout Activity Centres can be difficult. That’s why we’ve

put together some ideas, information and links that you might find useful to help kick- start your fundraising. Visit the website scouts.org.uk/sac.

FundingSet up in 2001, the Development Grants Board (DGB) has a remit to receive applications and provide grants for the development of local Scouting and provide occasional personal bursaries.

The DGB has a number of funds from which to provide grants, supporting a range of activities and adventures. Adult volunteers can benefit from DofE Assessor training, help in gaining Activity Permits and Skills Instructor training.

If you’re interested in booking onto one of our NGB, Permit or Water Sports courses, up to 50% of your costs could be funded through the Development Grants Board. Look out for the DGB icon on pages 19 to 26, which illustrate which courses are eligible for funding (subject to assessment criteria). welcome to PTE 2015

Now in its fourth year, the Programme, Training and Event Guide has more National Governing Body (NGB) courses, new activity badge courses for every section and more opportunities for funding courses than ever before. Our centres have seen impressive developments such as a new lodge at Youlbury, a new tunnel system built by volunteers at Downe and eight centres now hold the Learning Outside the Classroom (LotC) Quality Badge and Adventuremark.

Cub Centenary

The Cub Centenary year takes place in 2016 where Scout Activity Centres will open their doors to Cub Adventure Camps to

get more Cubs trying out adventurous activities and

Cubs Year of Adventure 2015

The Cub section is all about fun and adventure and in 2015 we want to invite more people to Fundays at Gilwell Park and Woodhouse Park. These are events specifically tailored to Beavers and Cubs, and are a great way to complete some of their Year of Adventure challenges. Cubs can have a go on activities such as high ropes, rafting, water slides, abseiling and much more. We will be celebrating different adventurous activities every month in 2015 so keep up to speed on facebook.com/ScoutActivityCentres

Reunion 2016 – Thank You Party

The Cub section would not be where it is today without the millions of people who have made Cub Scouts a success over the past one hundred years. We think they deserve a huge thank you. To start this off we will be hosting a Thank You party at Gilwell Reunion 2016 to celebrate all those who have been involved with the Cub Scout section past and present.

Crawfordsburn continues to be able to accommodate more and more groups in this beautiful part of the world. The centre aims to get their LOtC Quality badge soon and they will also be hosting NI Ex 2015 which is an opportunity for Explorers and Network to complete expedition training on foot or in canoes. Where applicable, participants can also plan or complete their expedition too.

downe is having the access road on the centre resurfaced and the exterior of the crew hut has been re-clad and double glazing put in. There is a new sensory trail and tunnel trail activity. Downe is also now hosting more Leader courses than ever before such as NSRA Rifle Shooting YPS Tutor, Archery GB Instructor Award and the Leader Training in Beaver Residentials.

What’s new?

bikes have been upgraded and there is now a range of both cycling and hiking routes suitable for all ages and abilities to get out and enjoy the beautiful New Forest. Additional toilet and shower facilities have been built and electric charging points suitable for phones and laptops installed.

gilwell park is adding Freefall to their portfolio which is a brand new exciting activity. New phone charger and valuables lockers have been installed at camp centre and six bedrooms in the White House have been refurbished. The Pack Holiday Centre now has all new bunk beds.

Great tower is now a British Canoe Union/United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (BCU/UKCC) recognised teaching establishment. To compliment this, the centre has a new fleet of Piranha Fusion kayaks which facilitate a brilliant learning experience for participants. The BCU/UKCC

paddle sport award courses in 2014 were so popular that extra courses have been arranged to train and assess even more people. This means 2015 will also see more water sports courses at Great Tower. Also, the kitchen in the Windermere Chalet has been refitted and includes a new floor.

hawkhirst now has two midge machines positioned at the climbing wall and in camp centre. The Rowan Lodge has new sofas and work has begun renovating and securing the jetty. Hawkhirst will host one of the Leader Training in Beaver Residentials this year.Kielder Water and Forest Park has been awarded a new status, making it the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. This is the first of its kind in England, is the largest Dark Sky Park area of protected night sky in Europe, and one of the largest in the world.

woodhouse park has added new furniture in some of the buildings and there is now a second low ropes course located in the trees. Fundays saw over 1,000 young people participate in exciting activities and now Woodhouse Park has the LOtC Quality badge, more and more groups are experiencing this fantastic activity centre than ever before.

youlbury has built another fantastic new lodge called Bear’s Den. There is also a new middle toilet and shower block which has separate adult toilets and a disabled toilet. The activity barn has been rebuilt and now includes a classroom, bouldering wall and indoor archery range.

Yr Hafod is now providing the NGB accredited Mountain Training Hill and Mountain Skills courses which are a practical introduction to the skills required to get started in hill and mountain walking. No previous experience is required as these courses are aimed at beginners at Explorer and Leader levels. Wifi is also now available at Yr Hafod.

Open to All

Those in Girlguiding and in schools are welcome to book various programmes, training or events which may also cover parts of their badges or curriculum.

The Leader Training in Beaver Residentials is on the move! We’re now offering the course at Hawkhirst and Downe Scout Activity Centres so even more new or skill seeking Leaders can grow in confidence from this popular course.

BCU/UKCC PADDLEPOWER START AWARD

This is a half day session in canoeing which covers going forwards, backwards, turning, group safety and raft games.Where and when? Apr to Oct 2015 at GT. All year at HH.How much? £7.50 per person.

Naturalist

During a half-day session, Cubs will learn how to identify different plants and animals in the centre’s surrounding area. Sessions are based on nature trail and pond dipping activities. Where and when? Mar to Oct 2015 at all centres (excluding YH).How much? From £5.50 per person.

Castaway

An opportunity for older Cubs, Sixers and Seconders to gain confidence, work as a team, and develop personal skills in a practical way. By working their way through a day of practical problems and activities, they can gain an understanding of how to step into leadership.Where and when? 11 Oct at GT.How much? £11 per person.

CUBS 100

2015 celebrates the Cubs’ Year of Adventure as a run up to the Cubs’ Centenary year in 2016. Take a look at the suggested adventurous activities on www.scouts.org.uk/cubadventure2016 and complete some of the Cub badges with us such as backwoods cooking, pioneering and naturalist activity badges.

PIONEER

Over a half day, Cubs get to grips with making rope, tying knots and lashings and building useful structures.Where and when? Throughout the year at all centres (excluding YH).How much? From £5.50 per person.

Outdoor Challenge Camp

A two-night camp based around traditional Scouting skills with the chance to try out some on-site activities. This camp will also count towards the Outdoor Challenge Award and the Cubs Year of Adventure.Where and when? Apr, Sep, Oct and Nov 2015 at all centres (excluding YH).How much? From £49 per person. A two-day skills course in canoes or kayaks which follows the British Canoe Union/UK Coaching Certificate syllabus. This course also counts towards the Time On The Water Staged Activity Badge. Where and when? All year at GT and HH.How much? £30 per person.Maximum group size: Six.

An opportunity for older Scouts, Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders to gain confidence, work as a team and develop personal skills in a practical way. I have been to Wintercamp four times and I have more fun every year with all the new activities. My favourite thing about Wintercamp is meeting up with people from other Scout groups from across the UK. It is undoubtedly one of the best adventures.

RYA START SAILING STAGE 1 OR 2

This two-day course follows the Royal Yacht Association National Governing Body syllabus. This course also counts towards the Time On The Water Staged Activity Badge. When and where? GT Apr to Oct 2015. HH all year.How much? £65 per person.Maximum group size: Six.

SURVIVAL SKILLS This two-day, overnight course aims to complete all elements of the survival skills badge involving shelter building, water purification and basic first aid. NATURALIST

This one-day course goes beyond the 1.5 hour pond dipping or nature trail session. Scouts investigate wildlife and human impact through trails and activities then present their findings. Where and when? Throughout the year at all centres (excluding YH).How much? From £10 per person.

Master at Arms

A series of activity sessions programmed over a weekend, week or number of weeks, which aims to develop precision and technique, ending with a competition within the group. These sessions may also cover the NSRA Youth Proficiency Scheme.Where and when? Throughout the year at all centres (excluding YH).How much? From £15 per person.

Did you know?

The Hikes Away Staged Activity Badge can be achieved at any of our centres by either using it as a base to explore the local area or by going on a trail, hike, mountain day or expedition with our qualified instructors. To find out where visit scouts.org.uk/sac.

A two-night camp based around traditional Scouting skills with the chance to try out some adventurous activities on site. This camp will count towards the Outdoor Challenge Award.Where and when? Ultimate Adventure

Great Tower, Hawkhirst and Yr Hafod are the perfect centres from which to complete your Ultimate Adventures. Here you can go caving, hill walking, crag climbing, sailing, ghyll scrambling, canoeing and kayaking. Extend your adventure by turning the activity into an expedition. Contact your chosen centre to find out more.

A Camp Pack from Scout Shops provides a great bundle of useful items for your trip that saves you both money and time. The Section specific camp packs can be found at scouts.org.uk/shop or from your local District Scout Shop.

GEOCACHING

This one-day badge course allows Scouts to get to grips with GPS devices, creating and recording geochaches and orientating themselves using GPS units. Where and when? All year at GT, HH, Y and GP.How much? From £10 per person.

CLIMBER

A series of climbing sessions either over a weekend, week or number of weeks which aim to develop personal and group climbing skills, correct use of equipment, improving climber safety and reduce environmental impacts.Where and when? ACTIVITY CENTRE SERVICE + YOUNG SERVICE TEAMS

Either as a Unit or individually, joining a Junior Service Team can provide an opportunity to gain experience which may count towards DofE or Queen’s Scout Award criteria and gain an activity badge. Explorer Mountain Weekends

These weekends are for up to 20 people to explore Snowdonia National Park. The programme is tailored to the group’s needs and objectives.Where and when? YH: 19–21 Jun 2015, 10–12 Jul 2015 or 30 Oct – 1 Nov 2015.How much? £45 per person or £23 with funding. Water and land based Explorer Weekends can also be arranged at GT and HH.

NICAS CLIMBING COURSE

A series of sessions programmed over a weekend, week or number of weeks which are designed to develop climbing skills. The course includes certificate and logbook.Where and when? All year at FC.How much? £40 per person or £20 with funding. Minimum group size: Ten.

In addition to RYA and BCU courses, the Time on the Water Staged Activity Badge activities are available at Crawfordsburn, Ferny Crofts, Gilwell Park and Great Tower.

BCU/UKCC 2 STAR PADDLE SPORT AWARD

This three-day training and assessment course delivers the skills to progress in paddle sports. You will get to experience the beautiful Kielder Water or Lake Windermere in both canoe and kayak. This course qualifies Explorers for the Paddle Sports Activity Badge. Participants should already be able to paddle forwards, backwards and turn the craft.Where and when? Apr to Oct 2015 at GT. All year at HH.How much? £65 per person or £33 with funding.

Did you know?

Participating in an Explorer Scout weekend or hill walking course at Yr Hafod can help Explorers complete some of their Hillwalking and Navigation Activity Badges. In addition, the Mountain Training accredited Hill and Mountain Skills Courses on page 24 are available to Explorer Units. Preregistration with Mountain Training is required. Contact the centre for more information.

SURVIVAL SKILLS

This two-night course aims to complete all elements of the Survival Skills Activity Badge involving shelter building, animal trapping, basic foraging, backwoods cooking, water purification and basic first aid. A Leader with a nights away permit must attend (at no extra charge). Tent hire may be available at your chosen centre. Please contact to enquire.Where and when? Throughout the year at all centres (excluding C and YH).How much? From £60 per person.

pioneer

This one-day course involves learning attachment techniques and building a pioneering structure.Where and when? Throughout the year at all centres (excluding C and YH).How much? From £11 per person.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

In this activity pupils use simple scientific theories to explain

things they observe in the natural world. They apply their

knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas to predict

where minibeasts live, before testing a hypothesis using

specialist equipment and working with others to carry

out systematic investigations. They talk about their work

and its significance, and communicate ideas using

ACTIVITY:

INTRODUCE…What? Living things can be classified into groups based on observable characteristics.

How? Building on their work from year 4 pupils should be introduced to the idea that broad groupings

can be subdivided. They will use direct observation to classify commonly found invertebrates,

thinking about what characteristics might be used to place living things in particular groups. At

this stage it is important to re-cap previous knowledge, and to check vocabulary. Simple activities

with taxonomical keys can be a good way of achieving this.

Plantable seed paper1. Shred pre-soaked non-glossy paper in a blender.2. Add assorted native plant seeds, but don’t blend again.3. Place a very thin layer of pulp on

some tight netting pinned on to a sturdy frame.4. Place baking paper across the pulp and roll a glass up and down to squeeze out the moisture.5. Place pulp on a dry tea towel and

Make a bug hoteLChoose an empty tin, box or plastic bottle. Fill it with natural materials – things with holes in them are brilliant. Make a sign for your bug hotel to invite mini beasts in. Place your bug hotel somewhere with a view, but not too exposed. Visit your bug hotel in a week, month, year, five years and see who’s moved in.

Nutritious mudMaking your own compost means you’re doing a great job of recycling and looking after the environment, but how is compost actually made?

To watch it happen use a large plastic bottle with the neck cut off. Fill it half full with composting materials such as raw vegetable peelings, tea bags, leaves, nut shells and fruit cores.Add a few worms (as many as you

can find) and a small cupful of water.Keep in a safe place where it won’t get rained on, thrown out or kicked over and every week make a note of the changes in the bottle.What’s going on in there? What are

the worms doing? Is this how all mud forms? Where will you use your nutritious new mud?

Sock grow bagPut a sock on the outside of your shoe and go for a walk through your garden, a field, a woodland or a countryside path. Now put the sock in a sealable plastic bag after spraying it with a little bit of water.Leave the bag in your window or somewhere warm with plenty of light.

After 2 weeks, can you identify what plants are growing from your sock? Perhaps you can replant them in the new mud you made from your composter.

Bee-FriendlyIt’s really important that we look after bees as they are a key part of our food production. Not only do they make yummy honey, but they pollinate the crops that we eat.

Without pollination, plants wouldn’t grow.Why not make a bee house for your garden? Or plant some bee-friendly plants such as sunflowers and poppies. Keep a count of how many

bees come visiting them.

Insect InvestigatorHere are some insect questions people have been asking for a very long time. Can you answer any?:Are slugs deterred by copper tape?

Are slugs deterred by coffee grinds? Do ants never cross a white line? Do rhubarb leaves deter aphids, slugs and worms? Do ants hate cinnamon? Are butterflies attracted to bright colours? Do worms prefer a carpet of

dead leaves or mud?

Camp Activity Ideas

Journey to centre – I’m going on camp

What you need: A good memory and plenty of imagination1. One person starts and says “I’m going on

Scout Camp and I have packed… (an item!).

2. The second person repeats the first person’s phrase and adds their own item, and so on until someone or everyone forgets who bought what.

3. Add in some wild and wacky items. Not only are they easier to remember, but the packing list becomes much more fun. Maybe someone will have packed their pet pink elephant or their lucky spotty socks.

4. Make it trickier for older sections by adding in actions to repeat.

Exploring the centre – Colour Match

What you need: Paper or card printed with a number of different coloured squares. Natural colours such as greens, browns and yellows will be easier to find. Paint colour charts are ideal to use for this game.1. Give each group or individual a

colour chart and tell or show them the designated search area.

2. The aim is to try and collect as many items from around the centre (such as leaves, bark, stones, etc.) that match one or more of the colours on the colour chart within the time allocated.

3. Points could be given for each colour match as part of a camp challenge or why not use the collected materials to create a picture of something at the centre.

4. Make things more challenging for older sections by adding some unusual colours.

Evening activity – The Shiny Shape Game

What you need: Cardboard, tin foil, string, scissors, torches (ideally one per person) and prizes (such as jelly sweets, marshmallows or chocolate)1. Cut some cardboard shapes in varying

numbers, for example 30 squares, 20 triangles, 10 circles, 5 stars and perhaps even a Scout fleur-de-lis, and then wrap each shape in tin foil.

2. Attach string to some of the shapes to enable easy hanging from bushes, fences, etc.

3. Hide each shape in various locations around the centre making sure some are more challenging to find than others.

4. Once it is dark, in small groups or pairs, look for the shapes.These can be worth different points for example, squares = 1 point, stars = 10 etc which can then be traded in for sweets.

Journey home – Group Story Telling

What you need: A good imagination1. Each group makes up a story.2. Start off with a theme or title such as

‘The day we went to Scout camp’, ‘(Your group name)’s big adventure’ or ‘My magic green tent’.

3. Everyone then takes it in turns to say one sentence of the story. Can you make your story long enough for everyone to have at least two turns?

4. Think of some fun unrelated words for your group to use in the story. The sillier your story gets, the better.
