Helsinki together with cities of Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti is the World Design Capital 2012.

WDC Helsinki 2012 will encourage us to observe and discover ways to improve our daily lives, our environment and even our business operations. Design is all around us, and well designed

objects as well as well planned systems and services will improve the quality of our daily lives.

The WDC Helsinki 2012 programme includes 300 projects, divided into six different themes. One half of the programme

contains various development projects, represented by the themes “transforming city” and “rethinking design”. Projects

based on these themes feature different forms and uses of design in a particularly broad and diverse manner.

The other half of the programme includes events aimed at city residents, tourists as well as design trend-setters and professionals. These are grouped under the three themes

“a year of events”, “exhibitions” and “encounters”. Design will also be highlighted through various national and international

publications under the theme “communications”.

THE MARI VILLAGE

The Mari Village will come to life. NEXT TIKKURILA. THE OLD STATION BUILDING 150 YEARS.

The station building in Tikkurila is one of the oldest preserved buildings in the area, and as a public building, it has touched the lives of many Tikkurila people. The station reaches the age of 150 years in the Design Capital year and is the venue of a varied programme of events related to the station in its honour. BEAUTY ON THE WAY HOME

Seasonal plants are part of everyday design in the city environment. The Beauty on the Way Home project will create new forms for the seasonal plant areas and highlight the traditional planting areas within architecture and park culture. SAUNA FINLANDIA

The Hernesaari areas will be built into a new residential area and a centre of business operations by the sea. A plan is currently being drawn up for the area with construction to begin in ten years time. Prior to this, the City of Helsinki will develop the Hernesaari area as a cruise ship harbour and travel destination. SPINNING TOP - CREATING A HAPPY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

UNIONINKATU AXIS

The Unionkatu street divides Helsinki city centre and encounters along the way significant urban spaces in Helsinki. FONT WALK

The Font Walk is about noticing letters! The tour will enable visitors to notice various and sometimes easily unnoticed public facilities where fonts are used.
