Introduction
PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME
The Graduate School strives to be a Business School of choicefor developing quality leadership and managementcompetencies in the African context.
The Graduate School of Business and Government Leadership(GSBGL or Graduate School) came into existence as a result ofthe initiatives of the Department of Developmental LocalGovernment and Housing as part of the UK Department forInternational Development consultancy project to buildcapacity in the North West Province. Through this project, acollaboration agreement focusing on the development anddelivery of Master of Business Administration (MBA) andMaster of Public Administration (MPA) Programmes weresigned by both the University of Liverpool (UK) and the thenUniversity of North-West. The first intake of MBA / MPApostgraduate students was in 1998, and PostgraduateDiploma in Management in 2000. The unit became part of theGraduate School after its inauguration in May 2000. Since itsinception, the Postgraduate Division programmes grewsteadfastly, wherein the input rate in terms of studentadmissions and the output in terms of graduation rateincreased each year.
The PGDip programme will enable students to gain relevantknowledge and skills and develop a deeper understanding oftheir particular specialisation. In addition to the taughtmodules, a student must complete an assignment project ofresearch of a limited scope on a topic selected to permit thestudent to use knowledge, theory and research skills obtainedin classroom learning in an applied setting related to theindividual's employment, interest or community.
The programme provides students with a wide range offunctional management skills in their chosen field ofspecialisation. Specifically the programme aims to: -a)provide a concentrated learning experience in specificmanagement functional areas in a national and internationalenvironment for students;b)develop competencies in strategic issues associated withorganisations;c)develop an intermediary understanding of fundamentalconcepts and principles from the various business and publicdisciplines;d)enhance students' managerial skills through a commitmentto an on-going managerial development; ande)encourage students to think broadly and bridge gapsbetween theories and the actual practice of effective andprofessional management.
