The waiting room. Spanish exile in the United Kingdom

Spanish exiles arrived in the UK in the first part of the XX century. Trapped between two wars their presence was a period of transition that for some became permanent. This project serves to introduce a dialogue about the intellectual contribution of those who came to this country and to present their story as part of the very history of the UK.

Would it be possible today to rethink the notion of exile beyond its typical association of being a forced condition? Could that formulation give place to the creation of a new outcome, a global citizen able to transit among borders and cultures? The Waiting Room through two months of music, cinema, book, documentary, talks and art intends to explore these vital questions around exile, memory and identity, highlighted by a city as extraordinary as London.

Gonzalo Serrats Urrecha is, above all, a versatile man. He holds a Bs in Economics. His extensive professional experience includesexecutive posts in both the industrial and consultancy sectors.Co-author of books in management and a University associate professor, in addition to all the above, he has a great passion for history.Gonzalo spent many years gazing at a family portrait of one of his ancestor, General Alava. This portrait had a prominent place in the living room of his home. One day, he held his gaze and then got the courage to open the wooden boxes that his family kept hidden since the nineteenth century. These boxes contained the files of the General Alava, files that were kept secret until then. He was reading the documents with such an intense feeling, that this was a turning point where Gonzalo Serrats become a historian, which led him to become a member of the “Foro para el Estudio de la Historia Militar Española” and a co-founder of the “Asociación Histórica Vitoria 2013”. Having brought to the open a key moment of the history to his homeland, Spain and Europe and bring to the public. This has given him the opportunity to give lectures, written articles and organised exhibitions on the subject.. And finally the publication of this book, which shows the testimonies of General Miguel Ricardo de Alava and the Duke of Wellington with a very difficult hand writing to understand!
