Newsletter of Tennis Seniors New South Wales. February 2015
Dear Members, Happy New Year to all our members and I trust 2015 will bring good health to all and I look forward to seeing many of you on the court this year. We started off the year in great style at Canberra having 29 teams entered and all performed admirably with the weather being kind to us. In the second week we had many winners in the Championship Events. Tennis Seniors Australia will be conducting an electronic poll shortly to determine players preference as to the time of the year that the Teams Events should be held. Please respond to this as we have had many complaints over the years that it is too hot in January. TSA has requested a comprehensive list of NSW members’ email addresses so that “The Racquet” can be more widely distributed. We trust that our members will approve of this initiative. If not, we ask that you tell the Secretary. If you have a look at the Tournament calendar you will see we have over 30 Events on each year and we encourage new and old members to participate in some of these, especially the Country ones as each of these is a fantastic way to spend an enjoyable weekend. We welcome two new members on our Committee: Julie Pratt and Bob Bow who both bring with them a wealth of experience and expertise. The Committee is always open to suggestions that you may wish to discuss. May I take this opportunity to give a special thanks to our retiring members, Greg Scott,
Maureen Bartels and Jo Walter whose presence on the team has been much appreciated. Also if there are any prospective sponsors out there, it would be great to hear from you. I would like to wish our Seniors the best of luck whilst competing overseas, and may they all have a safe, successful and enjoyable trip. MICK BRUTON PRESIDENT

When Monique was asked “why did you come to the Australian Teams’ Carnival?” She answered: We have so much fun in my team! We stay together, and have fun both ON and OFF the court. We visited the Glassworks in Kingston, and found time to go to the Australian War Memorial. The new exhibits are so-o-o impressive!” One of the great things is meeting new interstate players and catching up with “old” ones - we plan to go again in 2016 where it’s in Shepparton. We have already booked our apartment!

Team Dinner - Monday January 5
On the Monday night the NSW team
was fed and watered at an Italian
restaurant. The restaurant was
trying to recreate Sardinia and we all
became close buddies. It was a
wonderful night full of good cheer and
old friends.
Good company, overflowing
conversations, and full bellies, all had
a wonderful time, especially our table
Geoff Mortimer (pictured above) told
us he had his team in training for

learning curve for the boys!
We toasted Glenn, the Senior of the

A prized 12-year-old “prestige”
vehicle won’t start - seems like a flat
battery. The couple needs a lift to the
AGM – no problem – they’ve a good
friend nearby. Late that night, a call to
the service centre brings a mechanic....
“it’s the battery, you need a new one.”
“OK, can you put one in?” No
problem. 2 days later, male goes to
pick up female from Tradies Club –
turns off ignition since she’s chatting,
and waits. She comes to the car and
hops in. He turns the ignition – click
click. No life. Ohhh, call the service
centre again! “It’s the battery (again).”
But it’s only new!
To cut a long story short – lucky the
dealer had some time available in the
service Dept. It’s booked in for repairs
- He gets a lift back to Lyneham – a
new alternator is requested – from
Melbourne – it will take a couple of
days. Lucky they still have that good
friend!
Tired after a long day playing tennis,
NSW lady thought she would drive up
to the Telstra Tower on Black
Mountain. She noticed some nice
lookout areas so decided to drive up,
have a look from the top then go back
to the lookout and read her book for a
while in the peace and quiet of the
bush. She glimpsed an older
gentleman and a younger man walking
together on one of the trails to another
part of the lookout. After several
minutes a well dressed man came up,
sat on the bench next to her and started
talking. She told him about the tennis
and what her team had done and what
else they had planned for the
week. She was enjoying the beautiful
view over Lake Burley Griffin and
being in the bush. Eventually he told
her it was a male “pick up
area”. Shocked, she sat up and looked
around on the benches of all the other
lookout areas and guess what? - there
were other well dressed men sitting on
them. She finished reading the page of
her book, so she didn't appear too
shocked then got up and left. She
guessed she had been “cramping their
style.”
“You let that pair beat you yesterday
in the Mixed?” “No, my partner did!”

A message to ALL PLAYERS! The Tournament Directors at some of our tournaments have asked that we PLEASE complete the Entry Forms with ALL details requested, especially Date of Birth and Membership numbers. It is very frustrating to have to try to ascertain the age and correct identity of players without ready access to these important details. This is especially important when players are competing for Ranking points. The Tournament Directors are sometimes wasting their precious time in searching for information that should be readily available on the form. In particular, the Rankings Coordinator, Gail Bates, needs dates of birth for all players. Please help make their job easier by providing this information! Thanks!
L ying on the lounge, watching
our Aussie guys Groth and
Kokkinakis fighting it out is a
very comfortable place for
Glenn Armstrong – if he’s not playing
tennis he’s enjoying watching the game.
Glenn started playing tennis as a 6
year old junior. His dad was the coach
and groundsman at the Paramount
Tennis Club Dubbo and so it was usual
to find him at the courts hitting balls.
Being a left hander, Glenn worked on
perfecting that big curving serve,
which still tests his opposition now,
although it has a bit less pace these
days.
40 years ago Glenn played lots of
representative tennis, school, district,
junior state and local tournaments,
travelling the region with his parents, a
role which he in turn also did for his 2
boys when they took up tennis.
Paramount Tennis Club was founded
in 1923 and Glenn has been a member
most of his life, taking on the role of
President a number of times and is
currently Vice President. He was an
integral part of moving the Club from
the 5 court complex at Bultje St to the
current 12 court complex at
Wingewarra St which also boasts a
new clubhouse and facilities.
Glenn joined Tennis Seniors NSW in
2004 and thrived on the new-found
New South Wales - 5 Champion Teams
opportunity to compete against
players of similar age and standard.
Along with his mate Wayne
Dickinson they travelled the region
playing at various senior tournaments
and were rewarded with the titles
“Prime Possum” and “Big Dog” –
names more associated with their off-
court activities.
Tennis has rewarded Glenn with lots
of achievements - winning a couple
of NSW Senior Men’s Doubles titles
and a NSW Senior Mixed title, also
winning the Men’s Over 50’s Team
last year at the Australian
Championships was definitely a
highlight of his Seniors’ career.
To be awarded the 2014 Tennis
Seniors NSW “Senior of the Year”
has been a huge thrill for him, he is
both very excited yet humbled and
lost for words – unusual for him.
Although he is struggling with his
golfer’ s elbow, he is doing all the
physio he can, to get himself back on
court and playing that awful serve
again.
(Thanks to Karen Armstrong for this
article.)

Membership Drive - HEAD racquets
Recruiting new members has been continuing throughout the past year, and we are now up to
nearly 1300 members! This seems partly due to our FREE joining, plus FREE registration
with Tennis NSW and it is gratifying to have our current members introducing friends to
Tennis Seniors.
Our committee acquired a great deal from Head in 2014 through Committee member and
tennis coach Craig Edwards. A quality racquet and bag were donated by TSNSW at six of
our “Country Circuit” tournaments as an attraction for players to join during the weekend.
New and old members were placed in a draw with the FREE racquet and bag given away to a
lucky member.
One winner said about it: “the racquet is very good although it does play many of the poor
shots that my old one did. The size of the Head bag is inversely proportional to my playing
ability, and I hesitate to use it in case people think I am a good player.”

Two Mothers Remembered
I had two mothers – two Mothers I claim
Two different people, yet with the same name.
Two separate women, diverse by design,
But I loved them both because they were mine.
The first was the Mother who carried me here,
Gave birth and nurtured and launched my career.
She was the one whose features I bear,
Complete with the facial expressions I wear.
She gave me her love, which follows me yet,
Along with the examples in life that she set.
As I got older, she somehow younger grew
And we’d laugh as just Mothers and daughters should do.
But then came the time that her mind clouded so,
And I sensed that the Mother I knew would soon go.
So quickly she changed and turned into the other,
A stranger who dressed in the clothes of my Mother.
Oh, she looked the same, at least at arm’s length
But now she was the child and I was her strength.
We’d come full circle, we women three,
My Mother the first, the second and me.
And if my own children should come to a day,
When the new Mother comes and the old goes away,
I’d ask of them nothing that I didn’t do.
Love both of your Mothers as both have loved you.

O ver 200 players entered the 17th Annual Seniors Tournament at Ulladulla, which enjoyed perfect
summer weather. Players travelled from Canberra, Sydney and many regional NSW centres, between Coffs Harbour and Narooma. Adding an international flavour were players from San Diego and San Francisco in the U.S, who returned for a second year in a row, and they were joined by the two “boys” from Slovakia, Jurej (George) and Ivan who were holidaying in New Zealand and Australia. They fitted in and “had a ball”!
Each day the dedicated band of volunteers assisted Bev Magee and Maureen Mennie to provide nourishing sandwiches and delicious cakes and slices for the players to enjoy. Col Hickman even cooked scones which were topped with jam and cream – a very popular snack with tea or coffee. The bar was stocked with icy cold beverages and operated by Pauline McIlveen and Maureen Mennie, for an after-match tipple. A popular “watering hole”! Thanks must also go to Kevin McIlveen for his assistance and to Burrill Cellars for discounted liquor. Bunnings were very generous in donating 14 Eskies which were placed on each court to keep our drinks cold! These were much appreciated, especially when it got to 30+plus degrees on Sunday. On Saturday night, a hundred hungry mouths were catered for with fish (caught, cleaned and cooked by Bob Crook), rissoles (home-made by Bob) and sausages
along with a variety of salads. Bob
was ably assisted at the barbie by John Magee and Grant Charsley. Cheesecake was accompanied for dessert this year by a huge chocolate cake (from Robyn C) picturing our Tournament Director Val – who was celebrating 70 years on this planet! Players were aged from 35 to 84 – congratulations to our eldest player, “super senior” Ron Lewis on his participation again! He keeps on “keeping on” and can play a mean game! There was high quality tennis all ‘round, and the groups were graded extremely well again to give everyone competitive tennis to match their standard. Once again the Club is indebted to the major sponsor, BIG 4 Bungalow Park Burrill Lake, not only for the financial benefit to the club but also the excellent accommodation deal they give to the players, many of whom took advantage of this and were very complimentary of the facilities provided. BIG 4 also donates the major prize for the raffle, being a week’s accommodation for 6 people in one of their cabins. This year it was Graham Waller from Kings Langley who collected First prize and Second prize, a Ladies Tennis outfit, donated by Julie Hankin from Tennis Jewels, was won by our Treasurer Pam. Third prize of a fruit and vegie box from Milton IGA went to Gail Windsor from Bathurst. A wonderful selection of photos were taken by Grant Charsley, and posted on the MUDTA website – available for instant viewing, and for ordering if you wish to be
