Science festivals are vibrant expression of the cultural importance of science and technology of a nation. It gives scientists, inventors and researchers a chance to interact closely with students and citizens from all walks of life.

Science festivals offer many different forms of engagement such as, lectures, dialogues, panel discussions and debates; through hands-on demonstrations, shows, exhibitions, and workshops; in form of science-related theatre, cafes, music, and stand-up comedy. The goal of the science festivals is to engage citizens with science in ways that are inspirational and empowering. Science festivals are the  inspiring celebrations of the fascinating world of science and technology.

India International Science Festival (IISF) launched in 2015 is a celebration to promote Science and Technology and demonstrate how science could lead India towards a developed nation within a short span of time. The aim is to engage public with science and celebrate the joy of science and show the ways how Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) provide us with the solutions to improve our lives. Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in association with Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA), has created a unique platform of India International Science Festival which intends to inspire curiosity and make learning more rewarding.

The goal of the Science festivity is to help youth, develop 21st century skills, with a focus on scientific knowledge, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork. One long-term objective is to encourage students to study and work in scientific fields. The focus on the myriad faces behind some of the fascinating discoveries will inject scientific attitude in the masses and will give us the power to create new possibilities. Once we get young people interested in acquiring new knowledge, asking questions, and starting the quest for the answers, we will accomplish our goal. India International Science Festival (IISF) is a science outreach marathon not a science sprint. We hope this effort will fuel India’s drive toward becoming Vishwa Guru.

IISF 2019 is being organized by Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in association with Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA). This year it is being coordinated by Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the nodal agency is Vigyan Prasar.

Largest astrophysics lesson and assembly of spectroscopes will be attempted on 5th Novembers, 2019 with participation of over 1750 students. Astronomers use spectroscopes to know details like temperature, chemical composition, etc. of celestial objects hundreds or millions of light years away from us. A small personal model of advanced spectroscopes can easily be made by anyone using a box made of cardboard that has a very narrow window used to channel light into the spectroscope. A piece of a Compact Disc is used to split the light by a process called diffraction. This attempt is dedicated to Meghnad Saha and C. V. Raman.

The Largest electronics lesson and assembly of optical media communication units at a single location will be attempted on 6th November with the participation of over 950 students. Communication link set up through Infrared signals - Wireless infrared communications refers to the use of free-space propagation of light waves in the near infrared band as a transmission medium for communication. This attempt is dedicated to Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and Satyendra Nath Bose.

The record attempt for most people assembling Radio kits simultaneously will be attempted on 7th November 2019 with the participation of over 400 students. Like all other electromagnetic waves, radio waves travel at the speed of light in vacuum. They are generated by electric charges undergoing acceleration, such as time varying electric currents. Radio waves are generated artificially by transmitters and received by radio receivers, using antennas. This attempt is dedicated to Jagadish Chandra Bose.

The Largest human image of a human chromosome will be attempted to be formed on 8th November 2019 participation of over 400 students. In the nucleus of each cell, the DNA molecule is packaged into thread-like structures called chromosomes. Each chromosome is made up of DNA tightly coiled many times around proteins called histones that support its structure. The attempt is designed to inculcate the spirit of discovery in young minds to start their own exploration in the world of science and technology.
