Total Brass was formed in 2009 for a Royal Academy of Music project which aimed to prepare, perform and record Peter Maxwell Davies’s notoriously difficult Brass Quintet in concert with the composer present. After excellent reviews especially from Maxwell Davies himself, they decided to continue as a group establishing itself as a regular ensemble. Total Brass has since gone on to receive high commendation at a number of Royal Academy Competitions. The Quintet is comprised of current students the Academy and members include past principals of the Nation Youth Orchestras of Great Britain and The National Youth Brass Band of Scotland in addition to others who regularly freelance with renowned professional orchestras. Two members won the Jon Solomon Brass Prize in consecutive years. They were recently featured live on BBC Radio 3 as part of the In tune Christmas broadcast performing alongside the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge and the Barbirolli Quartet. Total Brass aims to give a total overview of brass quintet music performing works from a diverse range of periods, genres and styles to audience who may never have experienced such an ensemble before.

St Martin-in-the-Fields has welcomed talented musicians to this central London platform for over 60 years - from highly acclaimed young soloists, to choirs from all over the world; from promising new ensembles, to established professionals. This tradition is supported by the generosity of our performers as well as our audiences. Whilst these concerts are free to all, for those able to give, a suggested donation of £3.50 would be greatly appreciated to help fund all aspects of the work at St Martin’s.
