Dear Law, Justice and Development Week family,

The World Bank Legal Vice Presidency looks forward to welcoming you to Law, Justice and Development Week 2018. It is a distinct privilege to convene conversations on the work accomplished to date, and to chart the course for the work ahead to better support rights and protection in the development efforts we support around the world.

This year’s theme of “Rights, Protection and Development” is of paramount importance. The world is experiencing a surge in fragility, conflict and violence. It is estimated today that 65.6 million people globally have fled their homes either as refugees, internally displaced persons, or asylum seekers as a result of conflict and persecution. Forced displacement causes untold human suffering, particularly for the extreme poor and vulnerable, with negative impacts felt disproportionately by youth, women, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities, with significant economic and social impacts for generations to come.

Human rights and development are deeply intertwined, and the World Bank Group continues to support its members to realize human rights through ensuring that the lives of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people are transformed for the better.

The World Bank’s new Environmental and Social Framework has recently come into effect. The Framework sets out the Bank’s commitment to sustainable development and human rights principles are embedded in it, including transparency, accountability, consultation, participation, non-discrimination and social inclusion. The Framework emphasizes the need to take into account those that are disadvantaged or vulnerable, not only through the avoidance of adverse impacts, but also through sharing in the benefits and opportunities of development.

As we gather this year to discuss the central role that law and legal frameworks play in upholding rights and protection in development work, we recall the distinct but complementary roles different agencies fulfill in supporting the realization of human rights around the world. We recall also the common objectives we share, including in pursuing the achievement of the SDGs and in working together in mutually reinforcing ways to the benefit of poor and vulnerable people all over the world.

The Law, Justice and Development Week community grows every year, and we hope our platform will continue to expand our efforts to answer the world’s most pressing development challenges.

Warmly,

Sandie Okoro Senior Vice President and World Bank Group General Counsel

PIANO PERFORMANCE

Presented by Victor Lepri November 5-8 during breaks | MC Atrium

Victor Lepri, Brazilian pianist, started studying piano at the age of 15. He studied classic piano techniques and repertoire with Sandra Delallo until the age of 22 when he started his path through jazz with his mentor and friend, Mateus Gonsales. Always searching for a unique sound, he creates a mix of jazz, classical music and Brazilian music.

His art is inspired by some of the greatest pianists such as, João Donato, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Erroll Garner, Duke Ellington, Kenny Werner, Dick Hyman and Tom Jobim. He seeks inspiration from Brazilian folk music, from traditional singers to African-Brazilian drummers.

The improvisation always guides the performance, feeling the energy of the audience, he creates nuances in the music that promises to captivate and take the audience on a trip through a mind of art and music filled with improvisation and creativity exploring the piano not like a music instrument but as a tool to express the art that his music can reveal.
