4) QI Project Management — Strategic Imperative We use our improvement methodologies to accelerate and organize our learning within a project, but how do we manage our project while keeping up with multiple projects managed by diverse players in our organizations? Do we rush over aspects of our project cycle in the complexity of what we are trying to do? Do we rush through the planning to get right to the Change Ideas? Have we captured all the learnings and fully integrated our new processes into the fabric of the organization or will our changes slowly revert back to where we started? We will discuss one such effort to manage over 100 projects at any given time, from generating the improvement idea through planning, testing, implementation and completion of the project. Presenters: Dr. Frank Ervin, PQI Faculty, FHA Angela Tecson, PQI Manager, FHA

8:20 AM TO 9:00 AM KEYNOTE ADDRESS Dr. John C. O’Horo – Curriculum Director Quality Academy, Mayo Clinic

John C. O’Horo, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P. is a board certified internist, intensivist and infectious disease specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. Dr. O’Horo joined the staff at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in August 2016.

9:00 AM TO NOON SIMULTANEOUS ADVANCED TRAINING SESSIONS 1) Hospital-wide Patient Flow: Right Care, Right Place, Right Time Addressing vexing issues of patient flow in hospitals is essential to ensure safe, high quality, patient- centered care. Failure to provide the “right care, in the right place, at the right time” puts patients at risk for suboptimal care. Poorly managed hospital flow also adds to the already taxing burden on clinicians and staff and diverts their attention from clinical care. Improving hospital-wide patient flow is critical for increasing value — for patients, clinicians and health care system administrators. Presenter: Patricia Rutherford, RN, MS, Vice President of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Frederick C. Ryckman, MD, recently retired Senior Vice President for Medical Operations, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center

Presenter: Eli Mina, Registered Parliamentarian

12:00 PM TO 1:00 PM LUNCH

1:00 PM TO 3:20 PM SIMULTANEOUS ADVANCED TRAINING SESSIONS 1) Capability in Complex Systems Almost all health care systems involve complex processes and multiple providers. In our effort to improve these systems, it is often difficult to understand which processes contribute most to the effectiveness of the overall time and variation in providing care. Attempts to improve flow through these complex systems often involve choosing priorities. Do we choose the ones that are easiest or the best known or the costliest? Presenter: Dr. Curt Smecher, PQI Provincial Physician Lead

2) Vocal Training, Stage Presence The greatest impact speakers have in any conversation comes not only from the words they speak but from the sound of their voices. In other words, it is not just the message but the messenger that matters. In partnership with Bard on the Beach, this workshop will help improve your confidence on stage and public speaking skills. Creating and sharing the case for change is a critical component of the quality improvement process – and it depends on effective communication. Presenters: Mary Hartman, Educator, Bard on the Beach Claire Sakaki, Executive Director, Bard on the Beach
