BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

October 4th is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. As you know, St. Francis loved God’s creatures and delighted in them. His feast day is an opportunity to thank God for the enjoyment we receive through the dogs, cats, and other pets that God has blessed us with. If you would like to have your pets

blessed please bring them to the lawn area between the old school and the church on Sunday, October 7th at 3pm.

Put Not Your Trust in Princess (Audio Presentation) - Speaking from his perspective as a historian, Christopher Check reminds us that the crisis of our age is cultural and, in the end, spiritual. He explains that a flourishing society is not achieved through legislation or at the ballot box, but instead radiates from the family out. Using examples from the ages, he connects us with our rich patrimony as Catholics and provides practical advice on what we must do to transform our culture for Christ.

About our speaker Veronica Ortega

Born in Jalisco, Mexico and raised in Chicago - never expecting to leave the big city of Chicago, I have found my home to be Roswell NM for the past 15 years. My teaching experiences have taken me from the inner city schools of the Chicago Public Schools

and the Archdiocese of Chicago – to participating in the establishment of a Catholic school in Roswell, NM.

Now married for 25 years, to my husband Juan, and parents to three young adult daughters, it took several years to accept New Mexico - a place never thought of as home – and a place away from my own parents, family, and friends - as home. Living my Cursillo, and being led by the Holy Spirit, finally helped me be open and accept God's will to be used for His greater glory.

SAINT JOHN XXIII (1881 – 1963)

Patron Saint of Papal Delegates Feast Day – 11 October

Named a cardinal and appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953, he was finally a residen al bishop. A month short of entering his 78th year, he was elected pope, taking the name John a er his father and the two patrons of Rome’s cathedral, St. John Lateran. He took his work very seriously but not himself. His most famous encyclicals

were Mother and Teacher (1961) and Peace on Earth (1963). Pope John XXIII enlarged the membership in the College of Cardinals and made it more interna onal. At his address at the opening of the Second Va can Council, he cri cized the “prophets of doom” who “in these modern mes see nothing but prevarica on and ruin.” Pope John XXIII set a tone for the Council when he said, “The Church has always opposed... errors. Nowadays, however, the Spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity.” On his deathbed he said: “It is not that the gospel has changed; it is that we have begun to understand it be er. Those who have lived as long as I have…were enabled to compare different cultures and tradi ons, and know that the moment has come to discern the signs of the mes, to seize the opportunity and to look far ahead.” "Good Pope John" died on June 3, 1963. St. John Paul II bea fied him in 2000, and Pope Francis canonized him in 2014.
