Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers—often called heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC) technicians—work on heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings. HVAC technicians work mostly in homes, schools, hospitals, office buildings, or factories. Their worksites may be very hot or cold because the heating and cooling systems they must repair may not be working properly and because some parts of these systems are located outdoors. Working in cramped spaces and during irregular hours is common.

Construction managers are responsible for setting and keeping schedules, monitoring finances, and making certain that everybody is doing what they should every day. They help ensure that the workplace is free of safety hazards and deal with the various working relationships that exist on a job site. To put a finer point on it, construction managers oversee and lead a range of building projects from beginning to end. Construction runs the gambit between smaller renovation and remodeling jobs to larger commercial projects, like office buildings, hospitals, and schools.

Architects design structures such as houses, apartment complexes, shopping centers, office buildings, and factories. In addition to considering their physical appearance, they also make sure these structures will be functional, safe, economical, and suit the needs of the people who will use them. The majority of the time, architects work in an office. There, they meet with clients, draft plans, work on cost estimates, file permit applications with municipal building departments, and help clients set up agreements with contractors. Architects also have to visit construction sites to check the progress of projects and make sure contractors are building them according to their plans.

Creating computer-generated images (known as CGI) may include taking images of an actor’s movements and then animating them into three-dimensional characters. Other animators design scenery or backgrounds for locations. Animators can further specialize within these fields. Within animated movies and video games, artists often specialize in characters or in scenery and background design. Animators work in teams to develop a movie, a visual effect, or an electronic game. Each animator works on a portion of the project, and then the pieces are put together to create one cohesive animation.

These photographs, which frequently are taken on location, are used for a variety of purposes, including magazine covers and images to supplement analyses of engineering projects. Today, most photographers use digital cameras to capture images electronically. The photographer can edit the image on a computer. Once the raw image has been transferred to a computer, photographers can use processing software to crop or modify the image and enhance it through color correction and other specialized effects. Photographers who edit their own pictures use computers, high-quality printers, and editing software.

Welders use hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products. Their work includes welding components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. They lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers. Welders examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications. They recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
