We use an exclusive blend of organic and synthetic products manufactured by our sister company, Plant Essentials, LLC, also in Olympia, Washington. The “Wolbert’s Green” can’t be found in a bag at a big box store. u All liquid all yearIn the mid-80s, we decided to go all liquid with our lawn treatments, for a number of very good reasons. These included the ability to change formulations at will, to apply control products for spot treatment of pests while fertilizing, and to improve application accuracy. We were concerned about inadvertently spreading products in areas outside the turf, like sidewalks, pavement, ornamental beds and water sites. We felt liquids applied with specialized equipment would give us the best control of the placement of our products, and protect our environment.

uA formula for successWe found products that met the criteria and began using them. After much field study and formulating, we landed on a blend of synthetic and organic products that gave us the desired results. We then launched our liquid treatment

programs, which continue to this day. In the years following, we were encouraged by industry professionals to begin manufacturing these unique products. Plant Essentials, LLC now supplies several liquid products to a growing list of golf and landscape care professionals. All treatments are accurately applied with a hand-held shower head gun, minimizing off-target application on sidewalks, curbs and other non-turf areas. This premium bio-fertilizer program supplies phosphorus free macro- and micro-nutrients, organic fulvic acid and organic microbes (USDA organic compliant). The organic additives release nutrients and support or re-establish biological activity in the soil that will convert organic matter into nutrients and minimize thatch accumulation. Our products are predictable in their performance, allowing us to take advantage of our mild weather and encourage high quality turf all year-round. We do not use manures or fish products with objectionable odor problems or products that attract pets or wildlife. Thick, healthy turf will discourage weeds and recover from pest attacks quickly, should they occur.

Our unique bio-fertilizer with 14+ ingredients delivers the “just a little greener” look!

Integrity, Innovation...Wolbert’s Delivers.

Healthy soil and turf need many components to thrive, and this premium quality bio-fertilizer program supplies phosphorus free macro- and micro-nutrients, organic fulvic acid and organic microbes (USDA organic compliant). The organic additives aid nutrient uptake and support or re-establish biological activity in the soil, converting organic matter into nutrients, and minimizing thatch accumulation. Most over-the-counter fertilizers are simple macro-nutrient blends that lack biological components. Using state-of-the-art products and equipment, we safely and effectively apply our complex liquid products. Accurate application methods allow us to treat the Turf, not the pavement, sidewalks or ornamental beds. We are confident that beautiful, healthy turf can be enjoyed with no unreasonable risk to humans, pets, wildlife, or the environment. See wolberts.com for more details.

Goal Green turf & healthy soil, with no pest concerns, all year long

GreensKeeper Plus

GreensKeeper Plus Healthy soil, not just green grass.

GreensKeeper Plus Includes treatment for the following pests:uBroadleaf Weeds Broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions and clover, are controlled best when treated while vigorously growing (typically May-November). Our at-the-gun injection equipment allows your technician to treat individual broadleaf weeds as the lawn is fertilized during the growing season, minimizing herbicide use. Some difficult weeds, like clover, violets or veronica may need repeated treatments to control. The best defense against weed infestation is a thick, lush, healthy lawn.u Crane Fly Larvae Both European and Common Crane Fly larvae are active in our area. Treatment for European Crane Fly is included in our lawn programs in the Winter and Spring seasons. The Large Yellow Underwing has been found in this area and it is a voracious pest. This pest is sometimes confused with the nicknamed “army worm” because their feeding habits resemble an advancing army. Severe infestations are reported to completely destroy a lawn in 48 hours! If this pest increases to damaging levels we may need to add a Summer treatment at an additional cost.u Lawn Moss (see page 9 for more information)Unfortunately, there is no permanent control for lawn moss, but it can be managed. Moss thrives in poorly drained soils, shady areas and thin, nutrient depleted turf. Mechanical removal, like power raking, is necessary to (continued)physically remove moss, and is recommended where moss is dense. Moss grows best in the

absence of grass, so overseeding to increase grass plant density is highly recommended as well. GreensKeeper Plus bio-fertilizer treatments with high iron content encourage dense turf growth, filling the voids and discouraging moss. Lawns under this program rarely have a moss problem. Should moss removal and/or over-seeding be needed, we can refer you to firms who provide these services.

LawnEssentials

LawnEssentials includes three liquid bio-fertilizer treatments with the same biological/organic additives found in Greenskeeper Plus treatments.

Frequency Two treatments (Spring, Late Summer)

Goal Drought recovery and improved drainage

WaterMax Moisture Aid is included in the LawnEssentials program during the Spring and Fall season. WaterMax aids the movement of water through hydrophobic sod and soil and helps retain moisture in very porous soils. It also shortens recovery time after drought and helps drainage during the rainy season.

Treatments are spaced 2-3 months apart, during the rainy season (Oct-May).

NaturalLawn is a pesticide-free bio-fertilizer program. If weeds, insects, and disease can’t be tolerated, control products can be implemented upon request. You set the standard. It is certainly no disgrace to have a few lawn weeds. Lawn insect and disease damage can be repaired if it occurs. If a pesticide free environment is what you want, you can certainly have it and have high quality turf also. If you choose this program, you will need to take on an active role in the care of your lawn, monitoring for pests and deciding what to do should they reach intolerable levels. However, you can dial-in pest treatments from us whenever you need them.

What is a dormant lawn?Summer in the Northwest is usually very dry, often with less than 6” of rain for a 4 to 6 month stretch. Contrary to what you may have read or heard, during extended times of dry weather, simply turning off the water can be fatal to turf. Dormant lawns will be dead lawns unless they receive proper watering. Without irrigation every 2 weeks, many species of turf grass may die. Damage is especially likely if your lawn is subject to play or traffic. If your turf is stressed, take care to keep foot traffic to a minimum, and eliminate play on dormant grass or it will suffer even more.Deep-rooted perennial grasses, like you see in fields and pastures, are well suited to endure dry conditions. Most residential lawn species won’t tolerate long stretches of dry weather without suffering. Watering as little as 1/2” every two weeks should keep the crown, or growth point, alive.

The grass really is greener on our side

uDisease Management

Microdochium Patch is often found in Pacific Northwest lawns in the Fall and Winter. This disease can spread rapidly and cause extensive damage. Historically, preventive treatments (prior to visible symptoms) have been very effective. We recommend up to three applications over the course of the outbreak timeframe. Curative treatments (after symptoms are noticed) can halt disease progression, but cannot reverse damage.

uWeed Grass Management

Annual bluegrass (poa annua) is recognizable by its light grey-green seed head and light green color. Pre-emergence herbicide treatments are available to minimize germination. However, there is no product available that reliably eliminates established, visible plants. Since

Ferrous Sulfate (iron) You may find moss-kill products on the shelves of home and garden stores. Most of these products contain ferrous sulfate as the active ingredient, and are registered for homeowner use. We add ferrous sulfate to our fertilizer mixes all year, to promote color and chlorophyll production in the lawn. We do not consider ferrous sulfate a moss killer, however as a side effect, ferrous sulfate will damage moss. After high-iron fertilizer applications, the visible moss plants turn dark and begin to shrink in size. But, even at high rates, ferrous sulfate won’t permanently eradicate moss.Lime & Moss Contrary to what you may have heard, lime will not control or prevent lawn moss. Prescription lime application will correct acidic soil, improving the ability of grass plants to

uManaging Lawn MossDue to our seasonal weather patterns, lawn moss is a permanent fixture in Western Washington. Lawn moss is not aggressive and will not kill grass, but will grow between grass plants. Moss germinates from spores cast from the adult plants as they mature. If wet conditions prevail, new moss plants begin to grow and the cycle continues.Mechanical Removal Mechanical removal, by hand raking or with a dethatching machine, is the only way to eliminate existing lawn moss. However, moss will grow back. Maintaining healthy turf and soil with proper fertilizer, irrigation, aerating and overseeding will help keep moss out of the lawn. In shady areas, overseeding should be done annually. Our office has referrals for companies who provide overseeding service. Moss doesn’t thrive in well drained, sunlit areas with dense turf. More dense grass, less room for moss to grow.

assimilate nutrients through their roots and perform better. We do NOT recommend liming your lawn without a current pH test. Expectations You can expect to see some lawn moss Fall through Spring, especially if your lawn is thin, shady, or poorly drained, and even more so during years of frequent rainfall and cool temperatures. High iron fertilizer programs help minimize the accumulation of moss, but moss will not disappear forever; it’s just not going to happen.

u Soil pH CorrectionWe provide a free soil pH test every three years for all full program customers. We highly recommend adding lime to correct acidic soil. Should lime be needed, a quote will be provided for Wolbert’s to apply lime. You can also apply the lime yourself, of course!

uHorticultural Oil SpraysHighly refined horticultural oil is applied in the dormant season and at times during the growing season. Oil “smothers” eggs and the over-wintering stage of pests, and aids in fungus control. Target pests are aphids, scale, mites, and certain types of fungus.

uSpring Blossom, Leaf and Twig Blights Brown Rot, Scab, Dogwood Anthracnose, and Shot Hole fungus are examples of Spring blossom, leaf and twig blights. Fungal spores are spread by wind and rainfall and can infect new leaves, twigs, buds and blooms. Treatments provide a protective coating, reducing the chance of infection. Preventive treatments, applied before infection occurs, are the most effective. Our treatments also stop fungus from spreading on infected plants and protect them from new infection for a limited time. Plants grow rapidly

YardGuard Tree and Shrub Care is a program of periodic visits by a licensed, experienced plant health care technician to inspect and treat pests as needed. Your YardGuard program will encourage plant health and limit pest damage.Over 5 decades of experience in the Pacific Northwest has helped us to understand the tree and shrub pest issues common to our geographical area. This knowledge enables us to predict when seasonal pest activity might occur, and what plants will be affected. Your technician may make recommendations for further steps of action, i.e., pruning or watering needs that will encourage plant health. YardGuard is tailored to the needs of your landscape. Fungus prevention sprays start in early spring at bud break and insect control is added as needed. We do not use insecticides that pose a threat to pollinators. As the year progresses, all susceptible plants and trees in the landscape will be monitored and treated for disease, insects, and mites as needed.Your YardGuard program is based on the pest management needs of your trees and shrubs. An inventory of key landscape plantings is kept that will help determine potential pest problems so treatments can be applied in a timely manner. We strive to cooperate with established natural pest and predator levels by applying selective control products that are gentle on beneficial organisms. We will always choose the least toxic, most effective product to control pests.

uPhotinia Leaf Spot Fungus Red Tip Photinia is highly susceptible to leaf spot fungus especially during new leaf emergence. The affected leaves are spotted and drop prematurely throughout the year, severely hampering photosynthesis and aesthetics. Periodic treatments to protect emerging leaves start in February and continue throughout the growing season.

CBT Frass Tubes

u Cherry Bark Tortrix Moth (CBT)Cherry Bark Tortrix Moth attacks practically all rosaceous trees in the Northwest. This includes apples, cherries, plums, apricots, almonds, peaches, laurels, quince, firethorns, photinia and hawthorns. Damage to the tree is noticeable by dieback and premature wilting of the canopy. High populations can girdle and kill trees. The larvae of the CBT construct and visit their frass tubes with diligence in the spring and fall seasons. Well-timed insecticide applications in late September or early October and early Spring can be very effective in controlling these destructive pests.

uCopper SpraysEuropean and bacterial cankers (European canker pictured above) infect fruit and flowering trees in our area. Both types of cankers attack trees and cause various problems. These diseases spread by airborne spores, rainfall, or overhead irrigation. Their attack weakens limbs and branches, and can spread to the leaves and fruit. Infected trees should be pruned to eliminate as many of the cankers as possible. Young trees can be infected in the nursery, and should be inspected closely before planting. Severely infected trees should be returned or discarded. There is extensive information available online for diseases of Northwest trees.Copper sprays applied in the fall and spring help limit the spread of some of these diseases and may be recommended on your quote sheet.

We can provide information on other important aspects of discouraging this widespread Washington pest. Order now and leave the timing to us! We currently do not offer control treatments for Coddling Moth because of the conflict with active pollinators (bees) during the ideal treatment timing window, which is during early bloom time

uMites and Other PestsMites and other pests can do significant damage to landscape plantings. The treatments target damaging pests, and the products we use are soft on beneficial organisms like ladybugs and predator mites. (Aphids, lace bugs, and spruce and fir adelgids are tree killers, and are among the target pests).

Systemic Pest Management

uSystemic Insect Treatment This treatment method is recommended for long-term management of stubborn pests on certain trees and shrubs. Treatments are applied in the soil at the base of the tree or shrub, and are taken up by the plant’s vascular system to the leaves or needles, controlling pests as they feed. There are no adverse effects to beneficial predators like lady bugs. The soil-injection method eliminates accidental exposure to humans, pets and wildlife. Some target species include birch, maple, oak, linden, hemlock, spruce, true firs and rhodies. Very tall trees can be treated in any kind of weather, without canopy spraying, and receive year-long, cost effective control with a single treatment.

uSystemic Fungus Trunk Treatment Anthracnose is a devastating disease common to dogwoods and sycamore. When the tree’s canopy is very large and/or tall, the best method for control is a systemic fungus treatment. This application is painted or sprayed on the trunk of the affected tree once or twice a year. Fungicide is paired with a special carrier to help it penetrate bark and move through the plant's vascular system. We may recommend one or two applications, depending on conditions.

SuperRoots

Technique Liquid, sub-soil injectionFrequency Once or twice per yearGoal Replenish nutrients and

support biological processes

Plants thrive in healthy soil containing adequate nutrients, organic matter, and beneficial micro-organisms. Due to modern construction practices and limited native soil, we are convinced that urban landscape plantings may never reach their full potential without the addition of proper supplemental fertilizing and natural soil organisms. In a natural setting, leaves and needles that are shed in the autumn remain on the ground where organisms can break them down and replenish the supply of nutrients to the roots. But in urban “tidy” settings, leaves and needles are usually cleaned up, removing the source for natural nutrients. SuperRoots treatments, injected into the root zone, supply missing nutrients and biological components needed for healthy soil and plants. If plants are showing signs of stress, i.e. lack of vigor, yellowing, or dead foliage, they will benefit from Super Roots treatments. The most noticeable response is enhanced leaf/needle color due to increased chlorophyll production and normal growth. Our complex liquid bio-fertilizer supplies the

necessary nutrients your plants need to thrive. The addition of beneficial, certified organic mycorrhizal (my-cor-eye-zal) fungi and live microbes will enhance the natural systems that are critical for plants to access nutrients and water, and defend against harmful disease organisms. One or two treatments each year are recommended depending on plant species, and soil conditions.

uRoot Disease TreatmentFrom time to time, plants can be infected with root rotting fungus, evidenced by declining foliage or die-back. This may be the result of stresses on the plant due to poor planting or mulching, drought, over-watering (saturated soils), compaction improper pruning, etc. Our trained technicians can spot problems and may recommend lab analysis and/or treatments to prevent further spread of disease. Please refer to your quote sheet to see if our recommendation includes a fungicide addition to the fertilizer blend.

Goal No weeds!

uWouldn’t it be nice not to have to deal with weeds in your ornamental beds?If weeds are something you’d rather live without, we can help you reach that goal without expensive fabric installation or hand pulling. Our treatments control existing weeds and keep new ones from germinating for 12 to 16 weeks. We carefully spot treat existing weeds with Roundup®, and they quickly disappear. We also apply pre-emergence products so weed seeds don’t germinate. This stops weeds before you see them, the ideal way. Pre-emergence products are safely applied over-the-top of existing plants, without the risk of plant damage.

WeedFoe

u Without weeds to worry about, you enjoy your landscape more.Careful treatments around tree trunks, utility boxes, and under fences eliminate the need for string trimming or mowing around these

sensitive areas, limiting damage from equipment and relieving the need for hand pulling. If soil is wet, you may find that you are plagued with some stubborn weeds such as horsetail, northern willow herb (sometimes mistaken for fireweed), and buttercup. These weeds are almost impossible to eradicate, and success is dependent on the conditions in which they are growing.Naturally wet or over-watered sites require more frequent treatments to stay ahead of weed germination, as excess water shortens the life of pre-emergence products. Proper, infrequent irrigation is very important for best results. Deep raking or digging (more than inch or so), dog digging, and deer traffic disturbs the pre-

uIf you see some break-through...If you see a few weeds between treatments, we recommend spot treating with Roundup® rather than hand pulling, which can break the weed barrier and lead to new weeds. We have an inexpensive, long handled weed wand for sale that makes it easy for you to spot treat from a standing position, without risking overspray on desirable foliage. Using the wand, you can daub the weed with Roundup®solution and let them die in place. The tool is handy for spot treating undesirable grasses in your lawn as well.

uTreatments are safe and pose no un-reasonable risk for humans, pets, wildlife, or the environment. Our WeedFoe treatments are safe for your plants too. In fact, you can plant rooted stock, even annuals, in treated beds without worry.

uBark or compost?Installing ground bark mulch could give good weed control for a few months, but for plant health, properly processed compost* (kept at 140 degrees or higher for months) enhances beneficial soil organisms, helping plants thrive. Second, compost won’t deplete nutrients as decomposing bark does, and the possibility of damaging fungus transfer from diseased wood in bark is eliminated. Lastly, “real” compost will be less likely to grow weeds, as weed seeds are killed by heat generated in the composting process. With our weed prevention program you can install compost without concern about weed problems and still get all the benefits. If bark is the mulch choice, aged dark bark would be ideal. *Please call for compost supplier/installer recommendations.

Enjoy your landscape more — we stop weeds before you see them!

Say goodbye to unwanted vegetation in bare ground areas like parking lots, gravel areas, fence lines, ditches, around buildings, and places where no vegetation is desired. Control usually lasts longer since bare ground areas are usually not irrigated. As a rule, only spring and fall treatments are needed.

Bare Ground Areas

Noxious Weeds

Thurston County has over 35 species listed as noxious weeds. Tansy, Japanese Knotweed, Poison Hemlock (pictured at top), Gorse, and Poison Oak are some of the regular offenders. Timely treatments can be very effective and reasonably priced. Charges for noxious weed treatments are based on time and materials.

NoBrowse Deer Repellent Program

Technique Liquid, backpackFrequency As needed or every three monthsGoal To deter deer browsing in the

landscape, preventing plant damage

Although browsing deer are charming to watch, they can cause extensive damage, which is definitely not charming! Home landscapes often become the major source of food for resident deer. Browsing damage is most commonly noticed in spring on new, succulent growth, but broken branches, bark damage from feeding and antler rubbing, plus hoof damage to lawns and bedding plants, often continue year round. We process an OMRI listed repellent and spray it on plants that are browsed or are known to be deer candy. There is no need to treat property borders. The spray signals a predator kill, so the landscape becomes a classroom of sorts to teach deer that your property is not safe and is off limits! The NoBrowse program has proven to be very effective in changing the browsing habits of deer in our customers landscapes. Quarterly treatments are usually sufficient to stop browsing, but occasionally herd feeding habits require more frequent treatments.

We have one customer who was about to sell her house because the deer were destroying the very expensive landscape. She tried NoBrowse and it changed her mind! So you don’t have to put up with deer damage either…order a NoBrowse program.

Need a Referral?

From time to time, your landscape may have needs that our company isn’t equipped to meet. Fortunately, we know people! Our longstanding presence in the community provides us with a unique position to glean the best of local companies for referral to our customers. All our referrals have been vetted by personal interaction, or by reports from clients. We work hand in hand with these companies, so that your needs are attended to collaboratively. Mowing, planting, aerating, pruning, and irrigation repair are just some of the services we can refer for. Please call our office or talk to your technician if you are looking for a helping hand around the yard.
