For ten days, Philadelphia's schools, universities, cultural institutions, and research centers will come together as a single voice to put science in the spotlight.
Organized by The Franklin Institute with core collaborators:
Since the city’s founding more than 300 years ago, Philadelphia has been at the forefront of science and technology. Plexiglas, the polio vaccine, and the first electronic computer were among many local breakthroughs, and one in five doctors in the country receives part of his or her training in the region. Philadelphia counts among its many firsts the nation’s first zoo, the first public school, the first museum to mount a dinosaur skeleton, and the first independent hospital.
The Philadelphia Science Festival was created by the region’s science, cultural, and educational institutions to celebrate our rich history and to provide an opportunity to explore the science that continues to make this region truly exceptional.
Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the science behind all the things you love. The events outlined in the following pages are designed to be interactive and engaging — there is truly something for everyone!

Organized by The Franklin Institute with core collaborators:
What Makes the Philadelphia Science Festival Special? The Philadelphia Science Festival is one of a handful of science festivals in the country — the idea of celebrating science and technology in this way is still a new one.
PSF Events are collaborative. Throughout this guide, you’ll notice that multiple local organizations are working together to create each event.
All events are interactive, immersive, and engaging experiences! Test your hand at surgical simulation, ask a neuroscientist about her career, explore the night sky, shock your taste buds as you learn about extracting new flavors through innovative cooking techniques, solve mysteries using both historic and cutting edge forensics, or enjoy chatting with innovators in your corner bar or coffee shop.
Many of the over 100 events are FREE! You will need to register for events at philasciencefestival.org to reserve your space, but the costs are minimal, thanks to our many generous partners.

The 2012 Philadelphia Science Festival is created with the following programming areas in mind. Participate in all of them to experience the full breadth of activities offered!
SCIENCE CARNIVAL Logan Circle will again become a science wonderland during the Philadelphia Science Festival's Science Carnival on Saturday, April 21, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will feature more than 100 exhibitors offering non-stop, family-friendly experiments, activities, games, and a packed line-up of live entertainment on two stages. A complete listing of Carnival Exhibits and Stage Performances is available at philasciencefestival.org/carnival.
SIGNATURE PROGRAMS Explore new tastes, meet science superheroes, and hear the science behind your favorite music! The Second Annual Philadelphia Science Festival will have something to excite every sense. Nearly all Signature Programs take place in theaters or larger venues and are the cornerstones to the overall program — testing out new and innovative models, some will offer interactive table-top experiments prior to the event and others will feature never-before-seen demonstrations. Reservations are required for all of these events (even the free ones), so sign up early!
SCIENCE FILM FEST
Enjoy the very finest of the year’s science and science fiction cinema! Beginning on April 21, award-winning documentaries and features will be screened throughout the city—nearly all for the first time in the region. Explore the possibilities of citizen space travel, gain a different perspective of environmental activism by seeing the history of the movement and meeting a contemporary eco-pirate, or contemplate the multifaceted issues of chocolate farming, cancer research and new medical technologies. Curated by Awesomefest, this selection of films is sure to provoke dialogue among science lovers and film buffs alike!
NEIGHBORHOOD SCIENCE From Chestnut Hill to Port Richmond, Kensington to Point Breeze, and everywhere in between, Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods. Scientists, engineers, and other experts will appear in local libraries on the afternoons of April 25 and April 26 providing over 50 fun and free programs after school and into the evening for all to enjoy. Can’t make it to an afterschool event? Come out to one of three Discovery Days in Manayunk, Clark Park or the Seaport for a myriad of science activities.

CAFÉ EVENTS
Philadelphia's bars and restaurants were prime gathering places for dialogue and debate for our Founding Fathers and during the Philadelphia Science Festival our renowned restaurants, bars, and cafes will once again became hot spots for discourse. For all of the food-loving folks out there, enjoy multiple programs at which the science behind beer, chocolate, wine and food pairings, and other delights are explored.
Participants can also kick back with a beer while exploring a myriad of exciting scientific topics. For the competitive types, we'll have an epic Quizzo night. At many of these events, participants will have the chance to sample our special 2012 Philadelphia Science Festival ale, brewed by Yards Brewing Company.
ASTRONOMY NIGHT Take a "guided tour" of the stars in both expected and unexpected locales in Philadelphia. Stargazing sites will be set up at community centers, parks, charter schools, and even burial grounds in neighborhoods across the city. No telescope, no problem! A bevy of local astronomers will bring both their equipment and their vast knowledge of the night sky to each location. Stargazing will run from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on April 27.
LAUREATE AND LUMINARY SYMPOSIA
To honor the recipients of The Franklin Institute Awards, an array of opportunities are presented, including demonstrations and discussions for students and adults at The Franklin Institute as well as lectures and symposia at local universities for advanced learners and scientific professionals. These events enable the public to meet Laureates and to learn first-hand about their remarkable work. A full calendar of Franklin Institute Awards Week programming can be found at www.fi.edu/franklinawards.
Events featuring past and current Laureates are noted with throughout this guide.

POP-UP GALLERY POD ON THE PARKWAY
“Objects of Curiosity” installation by Mike Stifel and Rebecca Rutstein The latest Mars Rover, dubbed “Curiosity,” is currently en route to Mars. Sharing an interest in space exploration, husband and wife artists Mike Stifel and Rebecca Rutstein have teamed up to create a temporary installation inspired by mission, which is due to touch down on the red planet in August. Stifel, a sculptor, and Rutstein, a painter, have transformed an 8-foot x16-foot mobile storage unit (aka, a POD) with their vision of what the Rover’s entry sequence will look and feel like. The walls, imbued with panoramic vistas suggestive of a Mars landscape in the form of wireframe contour mappings, create a backdrop for abstracted white paper models illustrating the various stages of the spacecraft in its last minutes of flight. The POD gallery, located outside of The Franklin Institute, will be open daily during the Festival and during special events such as the Carnival and Astronomy Night.
The pop-gallery is a collaboration with Stifel, Rutstein and the Bridgette Mayer Gallery, one of the region’s leading contemporary art galleries.
Also during the Festival, the Gallery – at 709 Walnut Street – will have an exhibit by world-renowned photographer Sharon Harper called “From Above and Below.” The exhibit is free and open to the general public Tuesday – Saturday in the Gallery’s Vault Space. The images draw on scientific and artistic uses of photography to “illuminate existential concerns, embracing photography’s contradictory ability to verify empirical evidence and evoke fantastical possibilities,” explains Harper.
