    SHRM vs HRCI

The ongoing rift between SHRM and HRCI concerning certification continues to be a topic of discussion. SHRM clarified some of the mystery surrounding their new certification at their annual conference in Orlando last month, but theres been little opportunity for a public discussion with HRCI. Thats about to change. HRCI is starting a series of Town Halls in key cities. The breakfast events will be an opportunity to network and to hear from and connect with certified HR professionals.

Currently scheduled are visits to Seattle (July 22), San Diego (July 23), Houston (July 24), Chicago (July 29) and Atlanta (July 31). Events will be planned throughout the end of the year in more cities and in conjunction with other HR conferences and forums. Participants will hear from HRCI Executive Director Amy Schabacker Dufrane, Ed.D., SPHR, CAE.

October 2 - Being a Better Business Professional Some companies may question the need for having a Human Resources department, especially when they are on a tight

budget. After all, HR is a department that doesnt produce any revenue. This leads to some people viewing HR professionals

as nothing short of individuals that try to prevent them from accomplishing what they want with their business. This is why it

is important to hone the skills that make YOU a better business professional.

  • What I like about it, is that each of these interns will have projects that are meaningful to the company, said Odell. So, even if we never see them again, we will have gained something by the time the summer program is over. Additionally, they will have gained something too, because they will have skills they can take with them. The program is for college sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students with an educational focus in accounting, business analysis, human resources, informatics,

information systems and management, operations and risk management. More than 300 college students throughout Arkansas applied for the 20 available intern positions. We have had decent exposure on college campuses around the state, Odell said. I feel good about what weve done to promote the program. I feel good about the students who are applying, and I really

feel good about the response weve gotten from senior management and employees in embracing this program. The summer internship program is being conducted in Little Rock

Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield has implemented a 10-week summer internship program this year. The program, which is running from May 27 to August 1, is designed to help qualified college students gain valuable work experience, and is the brainchild of Odell Nickelberry, Director of Human Resources. Ive had success in leading several other internship programs, and it made sense to start one here. An internship program is a great entry for young leaders into the company. Odell said. It is very possible that of the 20 who come this summer, one of them could be a future leader at Arkansas Blue Cross. The Human Resources and Learning & Development teams helped Odell and Human Resources Supervisor, Teri Roper, start the internship program at the company. During the program, interns have received hands-on and relevant work experience, participated in team-building activities, learned from professional coaching, completed special projects, and participated in an assigned community service project. Additionally, they have been involved in weekly leadership programs in which they are working alongside Arkansas Blue Cross staff, giving them the opportunity to build lasting relationships with company professionals.

I had to overcome obstacles this year in order to make each meeting (time factor, rain, traffic jams, road construction etc). In the end it was all well worth it! The knowledge that I received from each module along with

the people that I have connected with in the HR world are invaluable.

    ~ Carolyn James Sudden Link

The HR Advancement Series presented by HRMA is a breath of fresh air. They are timely in their delivery, on topic for today's dynamic HR environment and rich in content. The style of the presenters is welcoming and engages the audience for a well rounded learning experience!

~ Carla Price, PHR Travel Nurse Across America

As a small business owner, I need information to manage my business and staff in a legally sound manner. The HRMA Advancement series not only met my needs; it exceeded my expectations. I am recommending this Series to my associates.

~ Judy Jones Sims, RDH, CEO a'TEST Consultants

As a past participant and speaker for HRMA Advancement Series, I would recommend it to HR professionals of all levels. The series provides a great learning opportunity to those new to the profession and a best practices refresher for those of us that have been around for a while.

~ Alicia Wilkins, SPHR Truck Centers of Arkansas

The HRMA Advancement Series is offered for HR Assistants, small business managers or those practitioners desiring review of fundamental administrative HR functions. Nine 3-hour modules are offered, with one presented per month. You may enroll in the entire series or only the modules that you need. Substitutions may be made for those enrolled in the series. What people are saying about the HRMA Advancement Series:

The Advancement Series was informative and enjoyable to attend. The atmosphere is laid back and casual and there is a lot of interaction between the presenter and the class. So you are not just getting one persons point of view but potentially everyone in the class. It is always beneficial to find out how other companies handle situations. And an added plus is that the casual atmosphere also makes it easy to get to better know the other members of HRMA that are attending each month.
