Greetings Fellow LIR Members,

We had some great offerings over the last few months. This catalog is full of more of the same. Thanks to all the committee members working behind the scenes to make LIR happen each semester. Perhaps some of you would like to join a committee or work a couple hours at an information table. We are passing out flyers at Farmers Markets in Appleton and Oshkosh this winter/spring. Some of us are addressing various business and/or fraternal organizations in the area. Please do the same with your favorite group of people. Let a Steering Member know if you would like help with this.

Thank you,

John Scheelk, President

Citizens of Oshkosh and surrounding communities in Northeast Wisconsin, most of whom had only previously witnessed the civil rights movement and the turmoil of the 1980s through news broadcasts carried through their television sets were stunned by the demonstration and the damage left in its wake. The public and official university reaction to the events of that day (soon dubbed” Black Thursday” by the student newspaper) was swift and punitive. Over the next several months, controversies surrounding the expulsion of the “Oshkosh 94” demonstrators, the conditions that triggered the demonstration and the limits of academic freedom raged on, thus protracting the most significant crisis in race relations to ever hit the region.
