There   is   a   saying:  The  more   things   change,   the  more   they   remain   the   same.     I   have   been   noticing   that,  myself,  lately.    This  year,  the  Foundation  invited  Ms.  Tami  Kesselman  to  join  us  as  the  YA  Co-‐Chair.    She  has  brought  us  new  and  fresh  ideas,  a  wide  assortment  of  extremely  impressive  speakers  and  panelists,  and   a   clear   vision   that   adds   to   the   success   of   the   program.  We   are   proud   to   have   her   with   us.     Last  September,   in   Bonn,   I   was   asked   to   be   Treasurer   for   the   UN   Department   of   Public   Information  conference.     There   nearly   2000   NGO   leaders   began   to   form   what   may   become   the   new,   SDGs:   the

Sustainable  Development  Goals,  for  the  future  beyond  the  current  MDGs.    Finally,  this  June,  the  UN  (and  many  well-‐connected  young  people!)  met  again  in  Rio  to  examine  the  pressing  issue  of  sustainability.    New  people,  new  paradigms,  new  energy  but  all  in  response  to  eternal  challenges  that  are  indicative  of  our  human  frailties.  The  struggles,  opportunities,  and  crises  we  face  remain  the  ones  we  faced  before,  in  different  incarnations  or  forms.        A  great  writer  once  noted  that  the  world  seems  doomed  nearly  every  day,  but  always  makes  it   ‘by  the  skin  of  its  teeth’  and  moves   on.     To   that   I   will   add   that   these   new   forces,   changes,   people,   and   ideas   all   help   us   understand   anew   the   human  condition  and  our  longstanding  challenges  to  promote  peace  and  development.  And,  this  is  the  value  of  a  youthful  eye  on  these  age-‐old  issues,  now  and  forever  more.    Although  the  issues  never  seem  to  change,  it  is  up  to  you  as  youth  to  help  move  humanity  forward  as  it  implements  new  techniques  and  inventions   that  will   affect  each  of   those  challenges  and  opportunities   in  brand  new  and   indefinable  ways.    This  is  your  moment;  make  the  most  of  it,  and  help  each  other.    Now,  like  the  MDGs  to  the   SDGs,   help   bring   the   concept   of  ‘development’   out   of   the   past   into   a   new   and  brighter  focus  and  future  for  us  all.        Seize  the  day!

With many thanks to our talented professional and intern youth staff. When you see them, please thank them for making this YA a powerful event:

Venue   Notes:   Due   to   the   Capital   Master   Plan   (CMP)   at   the   United   Nations   and   the   Rio+20   Summit   (which  moved  an  important  arms  treaty  back  into  conflict  with  our  schedule),  the  Youth  Assembly  this  year  will  take  advantage   of   the   entire,   extended   UN   campus   for   its   program.    We  will   of   course   open   and   close   in   the   UN  General   Assembly   Hall.   In   fact,   the   YA  will   be   one   of   the   very   last   major   events   in   the   GA   prior   to   its   long  overdue  closure  for  major  renovations  as  part  of  the  CMP.  That  makes  our  presence  here,  where  so  many  other  major  world  figures  have  stood,  even  more  special.        Other  venues:  We  will  also  conduct  some  programming  at  the  North  Lawn  Building,  in  the  “ECOSOC  Chamber,”  the  Church  Center  of  the  United  Nations  (CCUN)  and  the  Church  of  the  Holy  Family  (which  facilitated  the  visit  by  a  Pope  to  the  UN  as  well  as  the  recent  “Convocation  on  the  Rights  of  the  Child”  in  2012,  among  many  other  UN   related   events).     CCUN   and   Holy   Family   Church   are   nearby,   just   off   1st   Avenue,   on   44th   and   47th   Street,  respectively.        Please  ask  our  excellent,  youth  intern  staff  for  any  directions  and  thanks  in  advance  for  your  understanding.

8 GOALS FOR AFRICA MUSIC: JIMMY DLUDLU (SOUTH AFRICA) LYRICS: ERIC WAINAINA (KENYA) People working for less than a dollar a day And thereʼs no answer to the hunger And the poverty never seems to go away Theyʼre asking how much longer?

Let the children go to school Let there be no reason They canʼt get an education I see the beautiful minds coming From miles and miles like butterflies Letʼs feed the thirst in their eyes CHORUS

If we teach a girl to read A future generation rejoices, rejoices Put a microphone in the hands of our sisters Hear their voices, know their choices

We have the power at this very hour To decide weʼre losing no child under five That they will grow and live to see their eighties And live to see their babiesʼ babies [Repeat CHORUS]

She puts his hand on her stomach His other hand is on the heart, card in his pocket Their doctor, knows sheʼll make it As for the baby that both parents created Sitting at the gateway They are new parents-to-be Itʼs a good, good day

Weʼve made such major steps In the right direction We took the road less traveled by Weʼve pulled hard on the reigns of major sickness No, we wonʼt bear the burden of the sadness [Repeat CHORUS]

Smoke from factories Killing rivers and trees The waterʼs not drinkable The situationʼs unthinkable We must have somewhere to go when we need to go Overcrowded spaces Like a maximum sentence

What we need is opportunity A world in unity A level playing field See where we went wrong Take a look at the replay Itʼs time for fair play [Repeat CHORUS]

CHORUS TIME IS TICK, TICK, TICKING ITʼS TICKING AWAY HEAR THE CALL FOR A THROUGH-BALL YES! A LUTA CONTINUA THEREʼS NO TIME TO DELAY THE AFRICA WE DREAM OF ONLY 8 GOALS AWAY. AFRICA E! AFRICA O!

SKANZ – CREATING A CONNECTED WORLD

“Unwired Generation” is more than just a theme for this Youth Assembly. It is a shift in possibilities enabled by the rapid advancement of technology combined with the innovative enthusiasm of the next generation of leaders, YOUR generation. We are grateful to Skanz for helping to connect you to each other, both during the Youth Assembly at the UN, and as a community online long after we adjourn. Thank you Skanz for donating the bands. None of this would be possible without you!

TWO DEGREES IS GOOD – DOES GOOD

We are grateful to Two Degrees for their yummy snacks. And, even more, for being an inspiring model we can emulate in eliminating hunger abroad while improving health at home! While NGOs and generous donors have often been the most heavily leaned upon to help achieve most MDGs up until now, Two Degrees reminds us that individuals like us, translating ordinary purchases into specific donations of meals, could make an even greater global impact. And anyone, of any age, at any income level, can help! Thank you Two Degrees for donating the bars. You keep our energy up and our thoughts global!
