A WORD FROMWELCOME!

OUR PLANNERS:When I was a teaching assistant a few years ago in the

suburbs of Paris (thanks to a generous grant from The French Embassy), I experienced an extraor-

dinary celebration of contemporary art in the public sphere; open air, night skies, the city redefined through its most in-novative thinkers & artists. I wanted to bring the concept to its sister city & my hometown, Washington, DC. A small city with enormous cultural, intellectual, & international capital seemed uniquely fitted for a petit version of Nuit Blanche. I am thrilled that Art All Night DC has become a dream realized!

This night would not be possible without the support of my mother, Joy Austin, Gloria Nauden & Roland Celette-all of whom generously shared their time, advice & action plans to see this project through.

I am grateful to Alexander Padro of Shaw Main Streets, Inc. who attended Nuit Blanche Paris, had a vision for his neighborhood, & provided an absolutely indispendable non-profit partner.

Special thanks to Dr. B.W. Austin, Eyoel Makonnen, Jackie Cantwell of Curating for a Cause, & my colleagues at Meridian International Center.

Ultimately, this night is all about You & the City. I hope you will leisurely wander from space to space or excitedly dash from one destination to another. Hear a poetry slam at midnight, see a library transform into a fashion show, watch a short film in a church, or dance in an old Wonderbread factory. Go to every venue. Talk to the artists. Taste the music & feel the art. Stay until 3am, then wander the streets until sunrise...

My partner, Pleasant Mann, decided two years ago that we should schedule our vacation trip to Paris to coincide with an arts festival he had seen on France 24, the English language

French news cable channel. In preparation for the trip, I perused the extensive program booklet that was posted online by the Parisian government, choosing a number of video projections & other contem-porary art installations in the City of Light’s Marais & Latin Quarter neighborhoods. The 12 hour festival ran from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, but after about nine hours, we jumped in a cab & headed back to our hotel, agreeing that Nuit Blanche was something we would love to see brought to Washington, DC.

Less than a year later, Joy Ford Austin, executive director of the Humanities Council of Washington, DC, called me asking if I would take a call from her daughter, who was interested in bringing a Parisian arts festival to DC & needed a nonprofit partner to apply for funding. In a matter of weeks, Ariana Austin & I had successfully applied for & received a Festivals DC grant from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities. In the months that followed, an outstanding core team

of volunteers rolled up their sleeves & created the framework that became Art All Night: Nuit Blanche DC & enlisted the assistance of a diverse group of cultural partners that ensured that the festival would offer vibrant & exciting options for all visitors, regardless of their interests.

Shaw Main Streets, the commercial revitalization & historic preser-vation nonprofit that serves the 7th & 9th Street, NW commercial corridors north of Chinatown, has successfully supported the introduc-tion & expansion of a number of art galleries & performance venues in the area over the past eight years, not to mention over 80 new retail businesses. The neighborhood’s outstanding arts heritage made Shaw a natural place to host Art All Night DC.

So two years later, instead of reading the program brochure for an overnight arts festival, I’m writing the introduction to one, after having spent months helping to select the artists & make the preparations to host this festival. & I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to help bring Nuit Blanche from Paris to the Potomac.

CRAIG KRAFT STUDIO Sculpture Installation

Over the past 30 years Craig Kraft has gained national recognition in creating original works of art that advance the techniques he has developed working with neon and, more recently, rolled aluminum. He is one of only a handful of light artists in the world who bends his own glass & is respected for his ability to precisely manipulate the figure & light to capture his own artistic vision. His sculptures have been featured in over 110 exhibits throughout the U.S.A. & he has been a leader of the International Sculpture Conference twice. Recently, Kraft has been commissioned to create monumental rolled aluminum light sculptures for both Montgomery County Maryland & P.F.A. for the Downtown Silver Spring Development as well as for The Arlington Arts Center in Arlington, Virginia. He was invited to exhibit at both The Busan Biennale Art Festival 2004 & Hermandades Escultoricas 2005 in Merida Yucatan Mexico. His work can be seen at his home gallery & studio. A historic firehouse will open this evening, featuring an original Front of House neon sculpture.

LAMONT BISHOP GALLERY

Skypelapse Multimedia Contemporary Dance Installation Skypelapse reaches far beyond the stage, the scene, the theatre, the here & now, through a multimedia contemporary dance installation. In this duet between dance artists Ilana Faye Silverstein in Washington, DC & Lotta Lundgren in Stockholm, they use their physical distance as an opportunity & technology as a creative tool. Skypelapse is a continuous play on communication through movement while celebrating physical distance. The structure of the piece strings together live dance, projected dance, skype interaction between a live dancer & a dancers image, live performance, duets, & solos. Developing dance long-distance raises questions about our external worlds; can they let other people into this process? Can they let themselves into this process? Or is their process only a digitalized crutch, a substitute for real truths?

Alayna Rasile-Digrindakis Window InstallationIntersections are about timing, compromise, & about a creation of a very specific space & place. This piece explores what transforms a space into something much larger than just a physical intersection; material culture & memory. The warp & weft of this installation are scavenged materials & musings of the neighborhood. Through constructing this site-specific piece intentionally for this specific evening, the artist hopes to bring attention to what a sense of place can be, & to offer a reflection of the place this particular intersection is on this night.

Rachel Hynes & Ethan Foote Collaborative Performance‘Lit’ is a collaboration between performance artist, Rachel Hynes & bassist/composer Ethan Foote with an ensemble of 15-20 performers. Staged on the first & second floors, & rooftop deck of Insomniac Design, this immersive piece is a cross between a show & an installation. Audiences will be invited into the building & encouraged to follow the performance through the house or, they may choose to wander as they please. Sumptuous, visceral, wild & transcendent, ‘Lit’ explores moments of ‘Illumination,’ through the use of different light sources (candles, flashlights, Christmas lights, lanterns, sparklers) & the contrasts & tensions of darkness. Combining music, text, movement & imagery, the actors will perform small scenes & sequences for the audience to observe or participate in—a rock concert, an interrogation by flashlight, characters in business suits… the evening will end with a short opera on the roof deck.

CIVILIAN ART PROJECTS

Pan’s Pipes Exhibition Artists Ryan Hill, Erick Jackson & George Jenne investigate the counterculture vocabulary they grew up with to create the exhibition Pan’s Pipes. With a goal to create the psychological feel of a headshop, or other illicit spaces where teens go to escape the realities of family & school, the artists create new works on paper, sculpture, & a unique installation. The exhibition encompasses two galleries in Civilian, including a “black light” store space & a large back room filled with dozens of images, works on paper, sculpture, & found objects. While

the artists do not literally create a headshop, their work explores a visual culture that once embraced otherness & a kind of subjectivity rejected by mainstream culture. The work is both surrealist & psychedelic, combining imagery & objects to create psychological moods, dream states & poetic thinking.

Site/Schema: Nikki Painter ExhibitionIn her second solo exhibition, Painter’s works continue to develop & expand a set of images, bright colors & patterns to investigate the ways in which chaos & order interact & coexist. She will exhibit new works on paper & two site-specific installations, one in the project space & one in “The Entrance,” our new foyer space made available for experiments & artist-directed projects.

Brian Davis Interactive Light InstallationWashington, D.C. is a city full of complex, interdependent systems powered by bureaucracy, networks, and connections. This site-specific sculpture embodies this idea - exposing the way systems function on a human level. The work will consist of a variety of vintage and contemporary chairs loosely arranged in an outward facing circle. Directly above each chair is a distinct light, also selected from a variety of styles. The chairs and lights are connected by a complicated structure of boards, bolts and wires. The asymmetric nature of the construction combined with the hodgepodge of furniture is intended to indicate a lack of planning. As the first viewer approaches the structure, all the lights will be weakly illuminated, casting a glow on their respective chairs. When this first viewer sits in a chair, the light immediately overhead is extinguished. Similarly, if any viewer sits in any one of the remaining empty seats, those lights flare out as well. However the situation changes if all 5 seats are occupied at the same time. As the last viewer sits, all five of the lights come on to glow brightly. Like one of the district’s many memorials, this work can function as both a sculpture and social architecture. It provides a place to relax while being a part of the Art All Night festival.

GOETHE-INSTITUT

“Left Behind” (Zurückgelassen) Photography Exhibition Friederike Brandenburg The roof of a light-blue car, nestled among the spreading fronds of wild ferns & protected by lush green branches. A run-down wooden shack in a snowy landscape, its once brightly colored paint now dull & peeling. This exhibit follows the isolated traces of civilization in places otherwise presumed to represent a pristine, untouched state of nature. Beyond the well-traveled roads, in shady clearings & wide-open fields, lie objects discarded by human society, with singular aesthetic qualities & sometimes an almost absurd presence. Brandenburg’s photographs visualize the paradoxical relationship between beauty & decay. Works by Friederike Brandenburg (b. 1983) have been exhibited in group shows around Germany. Her photobook “Waidwerk” was one of the top entries at the International Photobook Festival in Kassel. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. MEMORIAL LIBRARYChristie Malvin InstallationScene Unseen is a large scale installation that incorporates both video & public participation to create a piece inspired by the rich cultural diversity of D.C. The piece is existentialist in nature, suggesting that the superficial world that oftentimes controls our view is non-important relative to the experiences we have & our interactios with others. All the people featured in the video are stripped down to a mere silhouette reflecting one clear truth; we are all human & regardless of social construction, we co-exist together to shape the city that we share.
